I think the moral is that no one person has the right to kill anyone. Sure, the Joker deserved to die, but Magog didn't have the right to do it (it wasn't in combat... Joker was clearly being led away in cuffs when Magog killed him). The fault lies in the government for not either killing the Joker or removing him as a threat. It was only when the jury told Magog, "Naw, senpai, you cool. Go right on killing these fuckers," that Superman left. He rightly didn't want to be part of a world where normal people gave super people the right to cool, because holy shit is that a slippery slope.

Did people think this was good? I read it a few months ago when a friend had left it at my place and I thought the narrative started strong but fizzled out About halfway through. It served as a reminder of why I gave up most comics back in my teens. I still read the occasional story compilations/graphic novels and many of them have been decent and some have been surprisingly excellent (the Alan Moore swamp thing volumes).

To me this is a DC vs Marvel book. It's about the new age of heroes that come in and are a more extreme kind of hero. This book is the perfect metaphor for Marvel coming in as the major cape publisher and taking over the market. No one wants old school heroes like Superman anymore, they want Iron Man who kills terrorists and Hulk who does nothing but get angry and destroy stuff.

Although in the "Long View" more of a return to the initially tawdry and occasionally sanctimonious roots of the genre. For a bit there early on, Batman was fucking mean. Superman could be kind of mean, even when he was definitely the one we recognize. Earlier drafts were worse.

That being said I like the idea of their being someone with as much principle, or several of them. You can have pettier heroes or anti heroes, but there being a definite "no joke/really not frauds or hypocrites at all" group, I like that. Even if they fucking get killed doing it. Maybe in some cases ESPECIALLY because they got killed doing it.
I think that's something clever they do in the Wildcards Universe. A lot of the real undeniable heroes and icons paid a price for it. The biggest "Hero" is universally acclaimed for trying his utmost against impossible odds, even if he failed and a lot of the population is more reviled than any ethnic minority could possibly be in real life, because of their hideous (and in a cruel twist, frequently actually totally useless) mutations.
But then, I also like that there is everything in between there, too. There are celebrity heroes who are kind of jokes or attack dogs for the government, varying degrees of coward or opportunist who either don't get involved when they could really help people, or actually help bad people exploit others, and even a few just plain old dupes who mean well, but are being misused, or have been. (Bagabond, Modular Man, although he knows his boss is a dick, he just has to listen anyway, poor, poor Oddity, etc.)

As I said, if you look at the whole history of some of the characters, it's not as if they were always so sterling.
I still like the version of the Justice League Kingdom Come is selling, don't get me wrong, but it's also incorrect to assume that them "making a come back" represents a return to the eternal, good old days of yore that always were.
