Has Alan Moore's body of work stood the test of time?
>>
>>81356892
Most of it has, yes.
>>
>>81356892
Unfortunately for him, yes
>>
I don't think his body works or can stand at all.
>>
Has he ever had an original idea?
>>
Well, Watchmen has, in my opinion.
>>
>>81356892
Oh god yeah. Very little of any of his stuff feels stale to me even now.

I can go back and read watchmen, swamp thing, top 10, from hell, league of extraordinary gentlemen, promethea, tom strong, Supreme (god i love his supreme), v for vendetta, miracleman. Honestly i cant think of any of the shit hes written that ive read that i cant go back and read and it still feels fresh and unique or at the very least enjoyable to read.
>>
>>81357723
He's had plenty. And hes taken derivative ones like supreme and turned them into amazing shit.

Not to mention Top 10 might be one of the most original idea's ive ever seen in comic book form.
>>
>>81357723

Well, yeah. Even in comics he didn't create he brought some very original ideas. Like Swamp Thing being some entity that merely believes it's Allec Holland. Or a Green Lantern from a species who has no sight, which means they don't know about colors and had to have the GL oath rewritten to suit their particular biology.
>>
Alot of people use the term overrated. and even on writers I like it is often a term that fits. I love Grant Morrison but he is at times overrated, same with Frank miller, or Neil Gaiman.

But Alan Moore I think is not overrated. That man has a brilliant strange mind and writes amazing fucking comic books. Furthermore he shows why certain stories make sense AS comic books (i feel the other guys i mentioned do this at times but not with the same nuance as Moore). Theres a reason Watchmen can be almost a one to one shot for shot adaptation for the most part and still seem to utterly miss the point. And fucking forget V for Vendetta. But his comics just make sense AS comics.

Though holy shit would I love his swamp thing stories adapted into a dark mature animated series with rotoscoped animation ralph bakshi style. which noone else wants and will never be.
>>
his underground early stuff, anon e mouse, st pancras panda etc holds up well and got reprinted in shelton's rip off comix

Every bit of cape work he's done is superior to any modern work, in themes, scientific interest, and sheer wit.

I can't say I like the man, though.

His "deconstruction" of the cape shit he despises so much directly led to the current DCEU. What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow was garbage as well.

You clearly haven't since you seem to think that he hates the industry he's in. Unless of course you mean interviews he does when you say works instead of comics he's written. Besides for someone "too weak and cowardly to break away." he sure managed to break away from the big two easily. He left DC after a television studio doing a soccer mom story on Elecktra Assassin caused a minor censorship scare at DC and Marvel in the 90s and he's managed to never work for them again.

>>
There are multiple periods of his work:

1. The british era (V for Vendetta, Miracleman, Halo Jones, Captain Britain etc). All of it is pretty good, great even but it's like ... recommended if you want to read more Alan Moore, not really his top of the line comics or the greatest british comics or something like that.
2. Classic era at DC (Swamp Thing, Watchmen, takes on a few classic superheroes) which is one of the best things ever, especially for capecomics.
3. Edgy hipster 90s works - almost everything from Image is shit, except Supreme which is largely okay but still pretty bad (mostly because of the xtreme 90s art). From Hell counts here and that one is probably his best work of all time, but it's closer to eras 1 and 2
4. Hipster millenial era at ABC comics (Top Ten, League, Promethea, Tom Strong) all of it is good but massively overrated. This is the era where he starts quoting himself too much, you can feel the smugness in his writing, the constant references and blatant hypocrisy, the sameness and so on. But they're still great worthwhile reads, especially because of the art which is great in all of them.
5. The stuff since mid 00s, absolute annoying horseshit. Only thing decent is that part he wrote for Crossed. Honestly don't even bother unless you're a really great fan of everything else he ever did.
>>
>>81364253

Just look at him. Look at that picture of him in the OP. That is a man who was born to rape, and robbed of his legal right as a member of the human race to go on a raping spree he turned to ink and paper.

the good part of those was the stuff he wrote post-DC

The first 6 issues of Miracleman (which is the stuff he wrote in Warrior back in the early 80s) is pretty underwhelming and the comic really gets great in the final 4/5 issues.

>>
>>81364684
Somebody needs to storytime this.
>>
Yes and no. I think his older work has survived pretty effectively- Watchmen and V for Vendetta especially- but there's basically nothing after the year 2000 worth reading, and most of his 90s work is aging poorly. There was a period when he was definitely the best working comic writer in the world, but looking back at his whole legacy, he's been eclipsed by other writers of his generation. Most obviously Morrison.
>>
>>81361716
You're just too stupid to understand it
>>
>>81364915
You mean only Morrison? Gaiman fucked off to writing novels. Milligan, Jaime Delano and other writers of first British invasion aren't even comparable.
>>
>>81364952
That's the second British invasion, I think the first british invasion is just the nabbing of artists like Bolland and Gibbons.
>>
>>81365004
I don't think the time they entered the industry was considered an invasion because DC didn't go out of their way looking for them. They all entered the industry pretty organically. Once Moote was a hit, other writers were literally picked up from a summit. The term invasion was used to describe how systematically it happened.

>But you and others should read more of his works and try to seperate his works from what they influenced.
Everyone always says Moore hates capes because he made them grimdark and nofun with his deconstructions, but he's also done some much more idealistic reconstructions of capes as well. Read Supreme, one of the most uplifting cape stories I've ever read and an absolute love letter to the history of comics.
>>
>>81370585
Why is it stealing if the story follows up a prophecy of the future of the corps? Surely the prophecy would come to pass at some point.
