Power Man and Iron Fist: Heroes for Hire is basically a straight continuation both of Luke Cage's and Danny's books. It's also very important to both characters because their friendship takes up a significant portion of both of their lives.

Almost none of them actually read comics so have an imperfect or inaccurate or poorly-informed understanding of the subject. Superhero fans that do read comics are actually a minority at this point.

I don't think they're that much older, but Danny was 19 when he came out of K'un-Lun. Misty is a former cop, so she had to have spent in the force, and Luke spend time in the pen, before escaping. It's assumed they're older that him by a few years. The casting seems to reflect that.

Why would they think that? The '70s were a period of greatly increased representation in media compared to what came before. Back when Claremont wrote him (Danny was basically a Claremont character, and Misty Knight roomed with Jean Grey for awhile after she became Phoenix) his iron fist had a fairly consistent "SKRA-KOOWW!" sound effect that other characters in the comic likened to a distant thunderbolt and could distinguish by sound alone. He was always very good at making sure character's powers were VERY consistent when he wrote them, something authors today could stand to learn.
He also began to have Danny find new uses for the Iron Fist, like healing himself or absorbing and re-directing energy, stuff that until Immortal Iron Fist was never touched on and used again.
