Why doe she get so little love here? lack of depth? lack of variety? relative absence from interaction with mainstream Capeshit?

Are his often selfish, thuggish motivations something that make him less appealing then, say, Frank Castle?

A lot of his books have good art, and a decent number have good writing, why does no one seem to know him?

Well, Conan suffered from adaptation decay. The original conan adventurers were really something special, but a lot of how good they are was how vibrant Howard's writing was, the way he describes things really stands out, it's great.

In other media... well, it's more hit and miss. And then later a lot of adaptations were adaptations of adaptations, being based on other Conan media rather than the original stories, so it got worse. Sort of like how the William Shatner impersonation evolved as an imitation of an imitation of an imitation until it had this huge presence in popular culture but wasn't actually really like what it was imitating any more.

Still, some of the comics are good. And some other things are good, too. It's just... sort of gradually drifted away from the original essence of the whole thing.

Thats true, Conan is a character who requires a fair deal of nuance, and as such does not lend himself to adaptation. When a hack writer gets Superman, they can at least have him engage in SUperdickery or do some kind of weird-ass space adventure or even just justice porn against someone they consider eveil.

with Conan, hack writers usually just have him beheading people, yelling "crom!', and telling women to shut up; and you can only put so many exotic beards on an amputated head before it begins to get repetitive

I'm 50% into The hour of the dragon, it's pretty good. The comics never really gripped me, and when it came to R.E.H I tended to gravitate to Solomon Kane and his lesser works until I actually said I'll check out Conan.Solomon Kane is a precursor to characters like The Punisher among others.
>>
>>81319112
Why do you say Punisher in specific for Kane? I would get, say, Blade, but Frank?
>>
>>81318963
>and telling women to shut up;

Its kinda funny reading the original stories, and finding Conan being pretty damn chivalrous (relatively speaking, anyway). He's even smacked around other guys for being disrespectful to women.

What's REALLY funny is what the comics did to Thoth-Amon. So many runs make him out to be Conan's arch enemy, but in Howard's original stories they never even meet face to face.

Yeah, as I said, Conan is a chaarcter with some nuance. He's bipolar (as Howard likely was), but there are still some definate traits he does and does not have.

Shame he's so hard to grasp and damn near impossible to evolve...but I do like it when he kills animals
>>
>>81319298
I should've said Jack Reacher .The Frank bit has more to do with Red Shadows, but really they sort of fall into the same boat. The unrelenting "justice" dispatching type. The same man carved from different rocks. That's my rationalization, but I feel that I'm beginning to reach.
>Solomon Kane is a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms.
>>
>>81319556
Its because they were vaguely involved with each other twice. I geuss some people interpret that as like, leading up to a confrontation, but for the msot part people like Roy Thomas did a good job of keeping Thoth as someone with an ancillary relationship with Conan, pursuing totally different goals that sometimes vaguely intercept

Which is funny given that's he been everything under the sun. Hopefully I got what you meant, because there seems to be this obsession nowadays with character arcs, when not every character was built to have arcs or shouldn't have arcs and are in plot driven tales.

To say Conan doesn't have a character arc I think does him a bit of a disservice. When read in chronological order, the Howard stories, while individually standalone, do paint a picture of a Conan who begins his life as a thief and a savage but eventually attains the rank of King of Aquilonia, becoming an honorable and chivalrous man in the process (though even that is a simplification).
I think part of the problem was that Howard died before ever really sitting down and mapping out the complete story of Conan (he wasn't even able to get all the stories published in his lifetime), or even get the copyright sorted out. As such, a handful of fans/writers picked up the license and wrote their own fan fictions and pushed them as the real thing, with their own ideas that were counter to Howard's original vision. These stories are what eventually got popular (being alive to publish something kind of helps with that) and got lots of comics and movies based off them.
Most of Howard's ideas and views on the stories were pieced together over decades by literary scholars from the mountains of letters and discarded drafts he had sent to friends and his editor. But by then the theme-park-version of Conan was already so well known by the masses, that it was kind of impossible to go back to Howard's version in any sort of mainstream adaptation.
At the very least we now have all of Howard's original versions of his stories back in publication.
The Darkhorse comics follow those, for the most part, and those are pretty good too.

Actually, the marvel run of Conan comics that have been collected in those anthologies by Dark Horse have been a major inspiration for a fantasy world I'm writing.

Also, earlier in the thread someone said Conan was a horrible human being. I disagree. In fact, he may be one of the more moral people in all of Hyboria. Many times has he been humble and praised other people for their part in some adventure(one story in Savage Sword of Conan vol 1 has him refusing to be the Captain of the guard, and giving it to another man who risked his life. And another story still when he murdered an evil queen he was offered to be king, but denied it because the kingdom would be in an uproar if the monarch wasnt female. So he elected a humble slave girl to become the new queen, even though she was super annoying to him throughout the story)

Also, that one story in vol 1(Skull River), he fights with a man who was mutated into a giant. But, after the mutant finds out he'll die a monstrosity, he begs to fight with Conan against the nobleman and sorcerer.

Then, comes one of the most bittersweet / emotional pages I've read in a comic.

Hyboria is among my favorite fantasy worlds too. It's honestly very unique in comparison with the genre as a whole, weaving in elements of historical nations and cultures of the ancient world as part of our lost mythical prehistory, which is also integrated with Lovecraftian chthonic horrors and extra dimensional Old Gods. The occultism is Conan is my favorite aspect, as you can tell Howard in his reality truly believed in the occult at least to some extent, just like Tolkien and Lovecraft, which allowed him to wrote such things in his stories in a way that felt so much more real and natural than someone who didn't

When Marvel stopped acknowledging this mythic past, that is when their whole world lost it's magic. He was basically a morale paragon übermensch compared to most most fantasy protagonists of today.

Broman man saved some ho on the road by ripping a mans arm off beating him to death with it then rap made love the woman he saved later she crossed paths with him alerted some guards to their passionate love making session Bromans response bitch is lying. In the end what did she expect stupid woman.
>>
>>81344130
>>81344133
Exactly. REH's best stories are dark, violent, misanthropic, full of nihilists who despise the weakness of civilization; like Conan. He wasn't a good person a la John Carter, he wasn't conceived as a role model, ever.
>>
>>81344256
never said he wasn't, and the same could be said from many fictitious characters
>>
>>81343987
He never raped her in that story, she was also taunting him while he was dying in the cold and was leading him into a deathtrap ambush.

Conan also kills people all the time, but he also doesn't have any pretentions about his killings and nor does he feel the need to justify why he kills people.
>>
>>81344356
And that's why the anon who said Conan is a good person is wrong.
>>
>>81344256
John Carter enjoyed the rush of slaughtering alien people. I would not consider him a saint either.
>>
I'm thinking of doing a story time if the early Conan marvel comics would anybody be interested in that?
>>
>>81344429
Not all alien people, though.
>>
>>81344398
Conan is a good person in context to his setting and the characters own sense of morales. He is one of the least hypocritical characters in the genre and never stay from what he thinks is right.

As a character he morale fibers made out of steel.
>>
>>81344547
Not REH's.
>>
>>81344532
People are still people, though, and he enjoyed the thrill of the killing.
>>
>>81344526

>>
>>81344570

>>
>>81344616
But he also had a family once, and then began a new one in Mars,as far as I remember. That makes him a bit morally superior to Conan.

>>
>>81344570
Nigger the original Conan has MORE moral fiber than the derivatives because they played up the douchebag barbarian cliche far more than Howard wanted to. This is the same Conan who dove into a fire to rescue a girl and a woman who he gave all his jewels to and never fucked, and the same guy who rejected a desperate woman's offer of sex because he equated it to raping her.

Go read your capeshit you triggered tumblrite cuck
>>
>>81344704
>Maybe you think that thieves and mercenaries are good people in general?

In a cutthroat world, it's all relative. And Conan has been shown to grow into other roles beyond mercenary and thief.

Much like how you wouldn't consider Jonah Hex a virtuous man, but you would damn sure want him on your side.
>>
>>81344780
wut
>>
>>81344704
I don't compare Conan to our living standards. He exists in a mythological world, is not corrupted by society and he is basically on a similar level as demigods as Heracles.

Our world morales doesn't matter in that context and a lot of the people Conan ends up killing are a whole lot more vicked in the heart than Conan is.

He is the nihilist übermensch and nihilism isn't objectively immoral.
>>
>>81344633

>>

>>
>>81344941
I mean, what you said makes no fucking sense given the context of the argument.

what does him being "dead" have to do with him being a good character?

why are you so obsessed with turning any attempt at discussion into name calling?
>>
>>81344986
>I don't know jack shit about rational discussion, but i suspect that if I call people names they'll give up and stop talking to me, allowing me the last word, which makes me the victor for some reason
>>
>>81344986
Nihilism has no value foundation. It's neither good or bad. It's the most neutral of ideologies.
>>
>>81344526
go go go
>>
>>81344986
Using the word "edgy" in an argument is basically the same thing as conceding that you lost the argument and that you have run out of any thoughtful to say.

WTF is that map supposed to be?

Conan's basically set on Earth after Atlantis sinks and before a few other cataclysms which change the face of the globe (eg., Argos, Shem, Stygia flooded to form the Mediterranean, and western Africa rising from the ocean).

That map is only half the size of the continent of Asia.

introducing furries, huh?

So I accidentally downloaded Conan the Cimmerian instead of Dark Horse's Conan. Should I go back to the drawing board or are those a good place to stop?
>>
>>81353388
I don't see why you should stop, if anything you should keep going

>I don't see why you should stop, if anything you should keep going
By stop I meant stop downloading/looking for books and begin reading.

Ouch.

So close to being (almost) on topic.

Good observations.

At the time Howard was published, money was from short stories in magazines rather than massive continuing books like Game of Thrones. So you don't see a proper arc like you do in more modern stuff. I think it is well within his ability but just not something that ever was available.

I think he liked the Hyborian age and would have liked to flesh it out more. He even had characters that bridged and connected times and higher idea stuff, he just needed someone to show up and offer him a check to put it all together or make enough cash to do so in retirement.

Some people have done good jobs trying to piece it all into one arc with varying degrees of success.

Is this guy related to the Chronicles of Prydain book series?
>>
>>81357496
>>81357745
On it.

>>81357797
Not that I know of, never heard of what you are talking about before.
>>
>>81357845
The Chronicles of Prydain was the source material for Disney's The Black Cauldron.

There was a character named Arawn
>>
>>81357888
Then what you are referring to is most defiantly related. Black Cauldron plays a huge role in the series.
>>
>>81357888
not previous anon, but no, totally different characters

>>81357947
or maybe I'm wrong
>>81357942
don't really know, just read the first book
>>

>>81357942
Okay, the comic I'm sharing draws from welsh mythology, and the book you are talking about also does, I think that's all they have related.
>>
>>81358027
Okay, thanks for clearing that up
Still looks awesome regardless

>rather than massive continuing books like Game of Thrones

Did such a concept even exist back then, at least commercially speaking? Always struck me a relatively recent phenomenon, the idea of devoting multiple volumes to a single story over a period of time, rather than containing everything in a single tome.

The Purple Invasion story for Operator #9 , and The Black Police saga of The Spider are the closest I can think of. But I'm confident some well read anon can stir you right.

Killing is thrilling, once you've spilled blood in heated combat for your life nothing else can match the adrenaline.

I played high school football and thought running a touchdown was the greatest feeling on earth. Buut then 9/11 happened and I was off to afganistan, abd nothing can prepare you for the mix of fear and excitment when charging ibto a room knowing there's people with AK's on the otherside shooting at you.

The closest thing I can think of is the "Barsoom" series of Mars/John Carter by Burroughs, but even that was mostly done in monthly periodicals.

I think that is just where the money and opportunity was, even most of Sherlock Holmes was done out of short stories of monthly publication.

I always felt this hurt Howard's writing as you don't know when someone picks up "Issue 148 of Strange Tales" (or whatever) that they ever read a Conan story before, so you're kind of stuck re-introducing the character. Which makes total sense in it's original format, but if you buy a compilation book of Conan today, it gets a bit repetitive.

I'm probably wrong but the earliest big sweeping multi-novel epic I can think of is Lord of the Rings.
>>
>>81361182
Oh right, those pulp novels in the '30s had lots of continuing stories from book to book, certainly pre-dating Lord of the Rings but not sure if they properly compare to a Game of Thrones style of today.

I'm not sure if lots of smaller magazine/novellas verses big occasional novels is better or worse for storytelling. I think it has more to do with economics and what works at the time.

We really kind of phased out of the whole monthly/weekly "Weird Stories" magazines with several short stories each issue thing.

>I'm probably wrong but the earliest big sweeping multi-novel epic I can think of is Lord of the Rings.

That's pretty exactly what I was thinking as well. After LoTR, more and more people wanted to create their own sweeping sagas filled with intricate world-building.
