The most modern Hawkgirl is a woman reincarnated from an Egyptian priestess who uses a special wing-harness (though recently in TV the wings appear to be part of her) to fly which also gives her enhanced strength and mild healing abilities.
She uses a mace and other archaic weapons because it allows her to leverage her mild superhuman strength better and because she has centuries of lifetimes of combat experience with archaic weapons she can call upon.
