I always liked it for a mix of being cute and providing an actual positive character for Karkat to interact with and perhaps learn a damn thing from. Kanaya could have provided something similar, red or pale, yet they never bothered to show anything like that despite all their time together on the meteor.
It also helps that it would have given Nepeta some actual time to be developed, the same can be said for a number of the trolls though.
