Short version: The furry characters came across a ship planted in the desert. Inside they saw some illusions of food, as they were all dehydrated at that point, Holly, the short blonde preggers currently, jumped into the illusion.
A critical point is that the illusions are created by microscopic creatures called 'dittos.' These creatures are telepathic and in usually wild, in large numbers they create 3d casts of objects they are either commanded to or by tapping the memories of creatures they target. Currently they are targeting Holly, creating a flashback of the days before the apocalypse. This is a post-apocalyptic comic if that hasn't become clear.

It's not so long. I first found out about it here on /co/ years ago and took me a day or two to binge the archive, then forgot about it only two years later, now I follow the updates.
Loooong story short: Some radiation shit causes mass mutations: If you are awake when you're exposed, you turn into an eldritch horror. If you were unconscious/asleep, you turn into an anthro animal (if you were drunk/drugged, you turn into a "not quite an animal").
Because of the horrors unleashed by the radiation (plus a healthy dose of military-industrial complex shenanigans) WWIII happened and lasted only a couple of hours.
Now the world is mostly turned to dust, and plagued by the eldritch horrors. The furry mutants live in colonies trying to survive, the "survivors" live in closed enclaves wearing hazmat suits and trying to purge the world of mutants, with some immune people (radiated but didn't turn) living among the mutants being especially hated/mistrusted. There's also some level of alien involvement and even minor mysticism, though what is real/where everything comes from is hard to know since the world is bonkers and desolate and completely gone to shit.
Comics follows life and turmoil in one of these colonies ("Endtown") and the missions to the overworld, first through a couple of it's inhabitants (an immune guy and his girlfriend), then through the eyes of a new arrival (Wally, the cat in the latest updates). Currently experiencing a flashback to the days before WWIII (the flashback made "tangible" thanks to nanobots).

I think the buddibombs would target mutants specifically. That seems like something APEX would do and mutants are probably the only thing you'd need hand grenades to fight. Also Aaron said that they don't exist anymore and we would see why, besides being out of production them going kamikaze on any mutant they find would also explain that.
