>Marvel brand will be riding high after the success of Civil War
>Cumberbatch brings his own established fanbase
>No Hunger games of James Bond releases this year; only real competition in November is the new Harry Potter movie but Strange comes out first and gets a two week head start

Unless Marvel Studios really screws the pooch, this movie is going to make a ton of money.

I don't care how much money it makes, I just want it to be accurate to the character. Doc Strange was the one character my dad really got into and I just want it to be good for him.

I'm still mad about Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One.
What is the point of whitewashing him? Marvel only has like 3 Asian characters.

Most of the Marvel's big female characters are X-Men, hence why we got a movie with a "talking raccoon" before a solo female movie. I guarantee you if Marvel had the rights we would've been had a Storm movie.
We're not getting a Black Widow because she's boring as shit, but Carol actually may be worse.

I'd be hype as hell for She-Hulk if it were done right, but I think they're avoiding her because she's an offshoot of a preexisting male character.

>We're not getting a Black Widow because she's boring as shit, but Carol actually may be worse.

I love Marvel and I think their movies are good to great, just have no interest in a 2 hour movie with Black Widow. Spy movies can work, but Black Widow isn't interesting enough to carry her own film. Would rather give that space to someone like Jessica Drew or MCU Peggy instead.

>>81162288
>they havent fucked up the casting, the characters or the plot (at least no major fuck-ups) in the end it would be about taste in genre.

Which is why they ditched their Black Widow movie. It wouldn't have worked because she works best as a supporting character.
>>
>>81162601
She's not interesting because she's constantly a side character. If you give her a full movie to work with, she becomes more interesting. At that point, it just comes down to whatever plot they can cook up about shady businesses and governments stealing shit.
>>
>>81162640

Marvel's trying to corner the market on Benedicts the same way they cornered the market on handsome actors named Chris.

Makes sense. Agamotto is one of the Vishanti. Also, the seal looks like a little latch or gate; in the comics the amulet opens up and the eye floats out and attaches to Strange's forehead to give him second sight. Perhaps that's what the Seal does; opens up allowing the Eye to float out.
>>
Who's playing Umar?
>>
>>81163874

Hasn't been cast. Neither has Dormammu.

By all accounts the plot is mainly going to focus on Earth-based sorcerers. Other dimensions will be a key plot element, and Feige said both that we'll get a glimpse of the Dark Dimension and of "scary things" from other dimensions, but that's all.

>Have we heard anything about who Rachel McAdams will be playing?
From what I've heard she's Strange's professional colleague and a love interest. The theory right now seems it's Linda Carter, the original Night Nurse, with whom Strange had a romance in the popular "The Oath" story, from which we know there are other elements in the movie, like Nicodemus West. The fact that she'll probably be working with him in the hospital before the accident seems like her story will also take some elements from Dr. Gina Atwater from the animated movie
>>
>>81161610
>>81161689
All I'm wondering is what kinda movie will they completely rip off for that one.
>>
>>81161288
Same here. I have high hopes but i dont want another thor 1. And Dr. Strange is essentially my all time fav superhero of all time alongside She-Hulk. I'm at least glad the costume looks fucking amazing. And cumberstilts has even talked about getting the hand shit down...which makes me so fucking happy.

Like the idea of brindlebuss humperdink in movie with more than a hundo mill in budget doing the fucking mystical bullhorns while saying 'BY THE HOARY GHOSTS OF HOGGOTH' and 'BOUND IN THE CRIMSON BANDS OF CYTTORAK' completely straight...just selling it. It makes me wanna fucking tear up i want it to work so badly.

I just want astral form cruising through psychadelic trippy dippy worlds, strange mystical creatures, wizards fighting wizards, Strange just flying around or commanding his cape like its a sentient being with his mind (IF WE GET STRANGE BOUND BUT USING HIS CAPE TO TAKE OUT THE PEOPLE WHO TIED HIM UP BY THROWING THEM AROUND ILL SHIT)

I have faith in the MCU because even at their worst (iron man 2 and thor 1) i find myself entertained...i'm easy to please. So man do i hope this works out.
>>
>>81164213

I get the feeling they're gonna tease a lot of stuff. The plot, according to Feige, is that Mads Mikkelsen's character is a sorcerer who wants there to be more traffic between the dimensions, and splits off from The Ancient One who is more cautious due the aforementioned "scary things." Mikkeslen wants to effectively tear down the barriers between realities and let everyone mingle.

If that's the central conflict and he's the villain then they need to establish the stakes. That means giving us some idea of what those "scary things" are and what they're capable of.

I'd say we have a very good chance of seeing glimpses of Dormammu, Shuma-Gorath, the Mindless Ones, and maybe even Mephisto.
>>
>>81164286

Man, cool tricks with the Cloak of Levitation is at the top of my wish list for this movie.

Also, Feige has said they're going to keep in Strange' "tongue twisty" spells so I'd say we have a decent shot at hearing at least BY THE HOARY HOSTS OF HOGGOTH
>>
>>81162204

>>

>>
>>81164430
>GotG are what sjws normally want but nobody gave a shit. It was just a funny cool movie.

the scifi setting gave actual chance for race to be irrelevant

sjws dont like that, they want race to matter
>>
>>81161868
Which is stupid as Feige described his character as "Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect, [He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through." which doesn't fit with Dormammu at all. And before that interview Dormammu was the #1 speculation, but then executive producer Stephen Broussard said “I’ve seen lots of names thrown around. No one has quite picked the name that we’ve chosen for him. It would be fun to conceal that, if we can." So it's really not going to be Dormammu. Combine that with the fact that Feige said Strange can "screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.", and my bet is on Kaluu, who's a rival sorceror of the ancient one who wasn't mentioned much before and was first introduced in a time travel story.

>>

I have to ask. Is there a way they can make a movie not about white people that isn't a minority cash grab or sjw pandering or something? Or is every instance of a movie not just being white people automatically only existing to get money off sjw pandering?
>>
>>81165650
That's impossible

You're asking a community that thinks that Finn being black in TFA in a sea of a dozen white MCs is SJW pandering, I don't know what you expect the answer to be.
>>
>>81165752
1. The movie has to be produced or directed by a person who has never made another movie that had a white protagonist or else it would be them "changing" their protags to a minority race
2. It can't have any other white people in the movie playing a supporting character, they have to be part of the main cast.
3. If the protag is non-whtie, the antag can't be white
4. There can't be any jokes regarding white people
5. The conflict can't include specifically white people
6. Finally, the minority protag has to be flawed in some way that they can't be construed as a mary sue

Just watched the trailer for this. What the fuck? I haven't followed Harry Potter in about a decade but as a kid I read a book called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was just an in-universe encyclopedia of different magical creatures in the Harry Potter universe with brief descriptions of their appearance and powers.

And this movie is taking place in New York? I never even heard New York mentioned once in Harry Potter. Is any of this based on shit Rowling actually wrote?
>>

She wrote the screenplay I'm pretty sure.
And she's finally revealing the American wizarding schools and their history.
>>

America is supposed to be this sort of new world and magic is left in the old world like Japan and Europe. Unless the American wizarding schools are native american.

They mention an american wizarding school in the books as well. maybe more than once but i know (ugh i hate that i know this without looking it up) that during the quidditch world cup they go to in book 4 there are fan there from the salem institute or some shit.

The American school was founded centuries after all the other ones by European immigrants, it's the newest one. Although Rowling says that Native American magic played a role in its founding though.

Her novel bombing had little to do with the quality of her writing. The problem is that if you start out writing genre, that's it. No one in the industry interested in "high" literary art is going to pay attention to you (admittedly, there's some crossover with mystery due to Alice Munro). Add to this the fact that your fans just want genre and any writer looking to break the mold is probably fucked.

That anon is right, dude. Sure, the Englehart comics were a little more mystical, but for almost the entirety of Dr. Strange's history magic has been treated as this weird energy force that's only difference from other energies is that it's less understood. Roy Thomas grouped it with stuff like electromagnetic radiation and said it was all being generated by stars. The Vishanti, Dormammu, Cytorrak, they're almost all just aliens from other dimensions who have mastered this sort of power and loan it out to their servants. The Principalities aren't like the Nordic or Olympian gods in Marvel, who were shaped by belief. Rather, they're independent beings, members of other races from other realities that have different laws of physics.

Shit, this is a recurring problem for Strange, because traditionally he's gotten the bulk of his magic from either these beings or from latent magical energy in his environment, but when the Principalities cut him off or he drains the local magic he has to find new sources. Gillis and Thomas both did runs that almost entirely revolved around that.
>>
>>81170992
Please explain how Dr Strange or Dr Doom does not approach magic scientifically? Or how Reed/Stark/Pym come up with scientific counter measures to magic all the time
>>
>>81172027

Shit, Mechamage built a technological suit of armor that runs on magic. Yandroth built a computer/robot that incorporated magic in its design. Doom build magitech devices all the goddamn time. Hell, Busiek's explanation for Scarlet Witch's powers (still the best one) is that her mutation just lets her tap into magical energies that normal sorcerers would have to spend years learning to access.

Genetics and science can both harness magic in the MU. It's just a weird form of energy, no different than the Power Cosmic, or the Nova force, or the Darkforce, or the Odinforce.

These threads bring people like this that don't want magic to exist in the comics and unfortunately we get writers like that too that can't cope with having both in the world.

Saying Marvel is sci-fi doesn't make it more realistic, guys.
>>
>still no examples that state that magic and science is not compatible despite the several panels in this thread and stuff like Tony building a machine to fight the Phoenix force and the beyonders being able to kill TLT
>>
>>81172377
>The problem is that you have assholes that don't like fantasy or magic and prefer sci-f

Dude, I love magic. My favorite books are LotR and American Gods. It took me years to get into the Dr. Strange comics because I had a kneejerk reaction to the way it presented magic. I wanted it to be all mysterious and symbolic, like it was in the other stories about magic that I liked.

But magic is not a universal concept. The ancient Greeks and the ancient Egyptians had different views on how it worked, and then views of Daoist sages in China and medieval alchemists in Europe were just as different. Same's true in fiction, magic can be different things. It doesn't have one version, graven in stone, that they all have to abide by.

Like I said, it took forever for me to get into Dr. Strange, but now I love it. I don't want it to be realistic, I love that it's weird and outlandish. I like that his magic is different, that its got its own unique system that's not the same as the other settings I like. There's room for diversity here, that's all I'm saying.
>>
>>81161950
Holy shit he would be a perfect Doom.
>>
So is alchemy magic or science...
>>
>>81172377
Fuck no. I love fantasy and magic just as much as sci fi. Shannara were the novelsbi was reading since grade 4, my favorite books are Kushiel's trilogy. Star trek and babylon 5 are two of my fav shows. Shadowrun is one of the best roleplaying worlds that incorporates both.

Its just a fact that marvel magic works very similar to science. And its not like its the only fantasy realm to do this. Look at D&D mages. They have to study specific words and hand gestures to make a spell work, they have to memorize that spell everytime and do exactly that or it wilk not work. When creating a magic weapon specific spells also need to be cast to craft it.
>>
>>81172672

I mean, do mean historically? If so, then it was sort of both. Early alchemists based a lot of stuff on the ancient Greek concept of the four elements. They reasoned that if all natural objects were composed of some combination of the four elements then you could add or subtract those elements from them and cause them to change. In that point of view it wasn't quite magic (they had different understandings of that and most alchemists would deny that's what they were doing) but more a flawed view of the world. They thought natural laws worked one way, when in reality they worked another.

In medieval European alchemy, though, a more mystical angle intruded. Alchemists started equating their procedures to holy purification, reasoning that the process could be used not just to refine physical object, but to refine their vey souls and become closer to god. General views at the time, though, still saw alchemy as not quite magic. Same for astrology, though they thought that worked under different rules and forces. That's why both those practices endured for so long, when other practices viewed as magic were more brutally stamped out by the church.
>>
>>81172672
Both. It's pseudo-scientific proto-chemistry that dealt with transmutation of matter (like turning lead into gold) and elixirs while incorporating magical circles and astrological symbols and shit.
>>
>>81172769

D&D is a perfect example. How many D&D settings treat magic as an energy force themselves? They're always talking about "raw magical energy" and the like. D&D wizards are always crafting shields and missiles out of the stuff. They put plenty of focus on more borderline sci-fi concepts like telepathy/telekinesis too. And let's not get started of the extensive planar level and dimensions that play a role in those settings, which draw way more from pseudoscience and quantum mechanics than they do from historical magical beliefs.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the concepts of D&D magic took some of their cues from Dr. Strange; his popularity heyday (with some of his trippiest stories) was at the same time as the formative years of D&D.

Pretty sure it did. Not so much the planar stuff, cause that is closer to old fantasy like Lord Dunsany's work. But im sure it influenced the mage mechanics. Strange even runs out/low of spells in some of those old comics.

Scarlet Witch can tap into powers that no sorcerer could tap into in a million years because Chaos Magic is not based on knowledge and can mesh with science powers, thus meaning Chaos Magic is completely excluded from those not chosen by Chthon, sorcerers think in terms of knowledge.
>>

>>81172769

I would argue magic in Marvel is not "scientific" in the sense that it does not correspond to our real-world understanding of how physics/the universe work. It's not realistic. The things that happen in a Dr. Strange comic are wildly unrealistic.

What marvel magic is, however, is mechanical. It has its own rules but those rules fit within the setting and are (mostly) consistent. It's not so mysterious that it defies all understanding. Sorcerers can figure out how to use it though years of study and training, but being a mechanical force means that magic consistently acts and reacts in certain ways. This allows other people who are not sorcerers to exploit the same mechanics in different ways, IE your Doctor Dooms, Thanoses, and the like. In this respect Marvel magic is similar to a number of other outlandish and unrealistic but still fairly mechanical forces present in the setting.

I dont think you understand what scientific means. It doesnt have to be believable or 'realistic' it just has to have testable and replicatable theories.

Take quantum entanglement for example. No one know how it works or why, but it is testable and replicatible. Hell, the most reasent finding is that not only is space non-existant to it but time as well. An entangled particle from the future can change the state of the one in the past. Kek, i just realized that physics now has retconning in it....

Whowere the major influences about how magic worked in marvel anyway? The way DC magic works was largely created by Gaiman and the Constantine writers, but mostly Gaiman. >trusting one of the most ethnocentric writers of the late 1990s to write a fully envisioned world setting

Rowling is unfortunately a trash writer, and despite taking up a decade to write her series, she wrote herself massively into a corner by seemingly making the world revolve around the british isles.

In many respects it's the same problem Kishimoto had writing Naruto, as he reached the edge of what he possibly thought of initially he had to tack on new ideas that often meshed terribly with the concepts and scope that had come before.

I skimmed over some of Rowling's notes on North American witches and the entire thing comes off as half baked nonsense and awkwardly trying to shoehorn in "native americans" as a single entity to appear multicultural, but failing to capture any real culture.
