Going off of google trends undertale is more popular (which isn't surprising in the least, for a multitude of reasons) but it was still everywhere.
Not to mention that Radiation, the creator of Undertale, was best friends with Hussie, made a significant portion of the music for Homestuck, and literally lived in his basement for a time.
Plus you've got all sorts of webcomics and people who worked on Homestuck who were in the Homestuck fandom who went on to do shit.

A few appeared at first for the fight, then more popped in to see what was going on, then more kept coming to see what people were crowding around for, and then it became a party and the fight was largely forgotten about. Back when Hussie said that the post-Gigapause update was going to be the end of it I was pretty stoked, like the journey we've been on for so many years and the comic that had left its mark on the internet and pop culture forever were finally coming to an end and it was going to be glorious. I don't know, I'd say the worst was at the moment of the revelation, that Time Travel was possible in that story. the existence of Time Travel in a piece of fiction is always a turn-off for me, because you see, I have come to the conclusion that if Time Travel is possible it will always inevitably (it's just a matter of time, and with time Travel, Tim doesn't matter) fall under the control of the the most amoral monster of the universe. It's inevitable, because if someone is reluctant to use some of the possibility of time-travelling for moral reasons it's just a matter of time he get defeated by someone that doesn't.
Most piece of fiction don't take into account this kind of thing, but Lo, enter Lord English and it was a complete game changer for me. Homestuck might be the first piec of fiction that actually take into account the inevitable amoral nature of whoever end up in fll control of time-travel.

Uh what? that has been true since day one. I mean It's one of Homestuck's main shtick, taking something silly and turning it into something serious. Anyone who read it knew it was wrong. None of that make it less funny. The whole point of fiction is that it allow you to laugh at thing you wouldn't in real Life. I don't see how anyone would take it as a big surprise or a revelation, it was clear from day one and Dave realizing it was slowly build up all around the story of Homestuck.
Narratively speaking it was all fitting in. Dave and Dirk talking about it was one of the best convo ever.

What if all the importance the trolls got had been given to the Alpha kids instead?
Just imagine.
Hussie wouldn't have needed to kill the trolls off. He could have relegated to background/minor supporting characters, releasing chatlogs and clues to their physical appearance, society and sburb session, one drop at a time.
Most likely, the comic would have been a couple years shorter, with a medium-sized community.
Then, right after its end, Hussie could have cashed in on the ending hype by starting Homestuck 2: Hivebent: The unrelated prequel: A sideline story about the trolls.
The fanbase would have exploded in size, making both comics extremely popular.
Homestuck 2 would have gone to drag on with trolls, romance and relationship drama, attracting the chaotic part of the fanbase that grew during 2010-2012.
Homestuck 1 would have remained finished and unaffected by the new readers. Maybe then it could have become the internet gem it deserved to be.
