Fuck yeah Moebius. I don't think anyone in comics compares except maybe Frazetta, who still doesn't compare in terms of vision and influence.
My gripe with artists who imitate Moebius (the ligne claire stuff) is they will get the detail but it always ends up looking busy. Ligne claire like that is hard as fuck 'cause you can't balance the composition by spotting blacks.

Yep that's what he's mostly known for. It's not really 100% ligne claire like Hergé, he does quite a lot of that signature cross-volume hatching of his.
In comics like Blueberry he had more of a classic comic book style and he inked with a brush.
Moebius was a legitimate god. There are works of his in gouache, watercolor, ink and they're all amazing. Later in the years he made a lot of digital work which you can see in >>80945980

Miyazaki cites Moebius as a huge influence, he based Nausicaa's aesthetics almost entirely on Moebius' work.
He worked a few times with Ridley Scott on his early sci-fi movies. Ridley Scott contacted Moebius on Blade Runner after reading an issue of Heavy Metal (this is from a Blade Runner: Director's Cut interview)

One thing most people don't realize is how fast he would work. He was seriously incredibly fast, probably one of the fastest ever at this level. He'd put 99% of American comic books artist to shame just on how fast he was able to produce gorgeous art panels without a sweat.

He entirely storyboarded Jodorowski's Dune in the late seventies. When the project sank they both decided to use the material they had for a comic: the incall. Good read, very 80's though.

Might be why he worked so well with Giraud - I'm not at all sure if Giraud was bonkers, but he had this enormous sense of discipline. Incal gets mad in places but IMO never messy.

Herbert's whole idea of the Fremen came entirely from his fascination with psychedelic drugs, and he made other works on the theme (e.g. Santaroga Barrier) where a community uses drugs to reach next levels of consciousness and gap the bridge between individuals.

Pen names are the norm in french cartooning. Most folks use them to draw clear lines between the various genres and styles they're working in.

I think it's less Neoptism and more it's what he was used to. He wasn't used to having bigger budgets, so he casted himself and his family to save money. At least that's how I always saw it.
