I know Reddit likes to say this a lot, but this is some Orwellian shit.

Not a big deal, but the implications are shady as fuck.
>>
>>80880570
and there's nothing we can do about it. it's set up so that no sane person would think it was a big deal (To change it) and thus they see no reason not to let another person think it's a big enough deal to change.
and they will continue
until there's nothing left.
>>
Most changes made for trades get updated in the digital version. Only difference is something like Batman Inc where entire pages were redrawn.

I remember they updated the trade and Comixology version of parts of the Death of the Family arc because, and I kid you not, some of the Batman-Joker dialogue had some of that classic homo subtext.

It's just the implications of being able to retroactively change something like this on a scale not possible before.

If you don't like it don't buy a digital version. Creators are pretty open about the fact that things can be updated like this. Busiek tweeted about an error in the last Astro City that was fixed in the digital version. It's no secret that digital allows them fix things as they see fit and I don't really see the issue in a publisher (or whatever Comixology is) going along with authorial wishes.

Examples?
>>
>>80880772

Burnham redrew some flashbacks to give Batman his real costume (Blue and Grey with the yellow oval Batsymbol)
>>
>>80880708
Not really? Books get revisions all the time. I don't think this is 'on a scale not possible before' since it's basically the equivalent of releasing a new print run.

If this was a newspaper or some sort of legitimate journalism, retroactively changing it would be some unsettling shit, but for a novel it's literally 'who the fuck cares' tier. There are paper copies with the original dialogue and I'm confident that DC has the equivalent of 'patch notes' somewhere that details all the changes.

>>
>>80880759
Are you a dumbass? If a publisher or author wants to change something in a book that's already been printed and sold, it wouldn't be possible with a physical copy. It wasn't until digital books came along that retroactively changing a purchased book became possible.
>>
>>80880762
Honestly, the change of 'but' to 'so' is more disrupting. The 'original' makes it seems like she's shocked at this revelation and that there's some sort of quality that had made it impossible for the guy to be Batgirl. 'So' seems less shocking and takes away some of the impact (for lack of a better term) of the reveal. 'So you were the masked killer all along!' versus 'But you COULDN'T have been the masked killer!'
>>
>>80880769
And? It's his comic, he can do as he pleases with it.
>>
>>80880827
Holy shit, you're fucking dumb. It's not about the scenario in the comic at all. It's the fact that works are being retroactively changed.

This is more akin to a George Lucas type situation than a "let's not offend anyone" situation.

Bolland -- the original penciller -- redid the coloring and was actually pretty mad at the original coloring.
>>
>>80880858
>>80880895
When you buy digital you are not buying an issue. You are buying a license to view the version that Comixology has uploaded at that time. Their copy can change. If you view that as an ethical issue, don't buy from Comixology or only buy from companies on Comixology that allow you to download backups so that you have the ability to save a copy of the exact version at a specific point.

This is like bitching that some show you like got taken off Netflix. Like, no fucking shit. What did you think you were paying for?
>>
>>80880888
Right! Maybe we should make it illegal to own copies of the unaltered, unshitty CGI'd Star Wars trilogy. It's George's movie. He can do whatever he wants with it.

There's a difference between changing something in a rerelease and changing the original work.

No? It's basically changing a copy of the original work.
>>
>>80880708

If the original artists/writers have no problem with the changes, I don't see the issue here. Besides, they're work-for-hire; DC owns the final product and can do what it wants.
>>
>>80880895
Did you know that several works are "retroactively changed" after they've been written, often before publication but also afterwards? Which is why several books, including novels, have multiple editions of the same story?

He never said "solid dick", that was an edit. A very obvious one at that.
>>

Books are edited all the time before and after publication. The only difference is that this time you saw a version before it got edited, and because it's an online format, then it doesn't leave physical copies of the old versions.

Surely you have better things to worry about, OP.

Anyone who wants the original version can buy it. A purchase on Comixology is not a purchase of the original version though. If that's what OP wanted he should have bought floppies instead of digital. It's his own fault.

>>
>>80880998
It's effectively the same thing as purchasing a digital copy of a game. If you don't want it to change ever you should play it offline.

Your problem is that you are viewing Comixology as ownership when that is not the case. When you use a library you don't own the books you check out, you borrow them and they remain the sole property of the library. Comixology is similar, you are paying for the ability to read comics using their service. If Comixology (the 'library') wants to change or update the books that you are 'allowed' to check out, they are completely within their rights to do so and you are an idiot who doesn't understand the difference between a 'good' and a 'service' if you think otherwise.

Would you be crying about revisionist history if Netflix removed or changed some of the movies that it offers?
>>
>>80881219
No it doesn't, because the original doesn't work the same way as the edit. The original isn't "So you're the imposter", the original is "But you're a-" and it wouldn't really work. But you're a celebrity? It's stupid redundant because you already yelled out his celebrity name in surprise.

Her saying he's the imposter out loud is contextually redundant but at least it doesn't make her sound like she's tripping herself on her own words.
>>
>>80881265

And DC - who owns the copyrights to the original comics - has every right to alter the comics, too.

No quite. The story was being written and drawn before the New 52 got started, so it referenced pre-Crisis Bat-continuity the way Morrison usually does. When it finally came time to publish, it had to be changed to reflect the new universe.

Ironically, it's recently been shown Bruce did have a suit with a yellow oval emblem at some point.

You weren't debating. At no point did you present an actual argument for retroactive censorship other than IT'S HIS BOOK HE CAN DO WHAT HE WANTS and then storked your disproportionately high ego.
>>
>>80881287
Yes that is correct. However, when you buy a physical comic book you are purchasing a 'good', that is a physical object, the ownership of which is passed to you from the vendor (who in turn obtained ownership from the distributor). At that point, DC still has the rights to the storyline and any future comics they produce, but that individual copy of the comic that you purchased is yours and nothing DC says or does can change that (assuming you purchased it legally obviously).

Comixology provides a 'service' in which you pay for the ability to read comics that Comixology provides. At no point do you own the comic you are reading (I assume that Comixology doesn't have a 'download this comic to your hardrive' feature). When you sign up for Comixology there is probably a long wall of text you have to hit 'I agree' to. If you actually read it, you'd probably see that it says that you as a consumer do not own anything and that your subscription, as well as the titles on it can be changed, removed, or terminated at any time.

I was actually just being facetious when I suggested that you didn't know the difference between a 'good' and a 'service' earlier but if you legitimately don't you should read up on it. It's pretty important stuff to know in this digital age.

That's interesting. I don't really care for digital distribution (don't own a tablet and reading comics on a desktop gives me eyestrain after about an hour) so I'm not familiar with online comic reading services.

I assumed that Comixology didn't have this feature because iff you download the comic as a bunch of image files (or a pdf or whatever) then obviously that couldn't be retroactively changed and OP wouldn't have a reason to make this thread.

>>
>>80881544
I actually haven't read the issue in question, outside the two versions of the page posted in this thread.

I legitimately have no idea whether or not the fake batgirl is supposed to be a transgendered individual, a run of the mill crazy person, or a glamrock wearing drag queen (I had assumed the latter since I can't imagine DC having a trans villain because 'muh diversity!!!').

I agree that in this particular context it is strange to have Batgirl not show any surprise considering that even --if-- transgendered individuals are treated as good/normal, statistically there are still far fewer of them than normal people. It would be like if the fake batgirl took off his costume and it was a 110 year old man, sure old people exist, but the odds of any one person being that old are pretty low.

>Video rental services somehow predate libraries
Pardon?

Video rental services weren't as apt an analogy because most, if not all of them were set up on a 'pay money, get movie for a week' basis. Many of them did not require membership and didn't have any sort of explicit agreement between the business and the consumer outlining the responsibilities and rights of each party.

As I mentioned in my original post (the same one I mentioned libraries in), the best analogy is to Steam or other online game distributors. That also bypasses the 'owning' vs renting issue that both libraries and movie rentals brings up.

Actually, it's about ethics in digital comics distribution

While the thread obviously took a pretty sharp turn, I believe the original intention of the thread was to illustrate how easy it would be to censor something by retroactively changing it.

With that said, I think that most censorship probably effects the book before it even gets it's initial printing so it's mostly a moot point.
>>
>>80882520
Not him but please explain to me how bugfixes, new content, "balancing" and all that jazz is at all related to changing dialogue in a comic book.
>>
>>80882515
It's the very definition of censorship you delusional fuck.
>>
>>80883529
No it's revision.
>>
>>80883560
The two are not mutually exclusive. It's a revision that censors the original dialogue.
>>
>>80883106
When you "buy" a game on steam, you're buying the license to play it. The developer/publisher can still go in and change whatever they want, including lines of dialogue if they so choose. Buying comics from Comixology and other digital retailers works the same way.
>>
Is it also changed in the physical TPB?
>>
>>80883607
yes
>>
>>80881338
agreed. people getting mad because barbara was surprised a dude was dressing as her, when she assumed it was a woman, is so incredibly stupid. anyone in the shock of the moment would have the same surprise thought, especially when he's a violent psycho pointing a gun right at her.
>>
>>80880502
So what ever happened to Daggertype? I imagine they wrapped up this plot as quickly and quietly as possible seeing the villain was a very delicate subject?
>>
>>80881338
>ultimately it helps clarify the overall direction of the dialogue.
But it doesn't. The original dialogue implied that Barbara was surprised that the villain with tits was a man. The new dialogue suggests she's not really surprised that Daggertype was the villain, or ya know, cross dressing. It's true the scene doesn't really change in any drastic way, but it is altered.
>>
>>80881265
eh I would half agree on this. it's comixology's right to decide what it is they provide in terms of their library. however i wouldn't compare it to Netflix. With Netflix you purchase the right to stream the content provided, but Netflix does not guarantee what content they will offer. Some shows may be there for a very long time, some may go away because the companies pull distribution rights. In that case, Netflix is definitely like a library - you purchase the right to go to the library and take stuff out to watch, but you have no ownership in regards to that content.

Comixology isn't really like that. You actively pay for books digitally and Comixology provides a means of viewing those books, be it on your computer or on another device. Once a book is published onto Comixology, they can't really just go in and revise it, not unless the company themselves requests the digital file gets updated. They provide the service, but they don't alter the files, they distribute them.

So as far as this "censored" version goes (which it isn't), it's DC that would have given Comixology the new file which then got updated. Comixology doesn't produce the comics, it distributes them. It doesn't even decide the prices of the books, aside from marking down newer books after they've been out for a few months and sales (which are normally done with approval from the distributing company)
>>
>>80883597

And guess what else. If Steam ever goes bellyup for some reason you lose all your games.

If Valve says "Let's charge them to use Steam." you're gonna have to pay to play those games.

Man fuck everyone who helps make digital media the standard. It's convenient at a pretty big risk.

I legitimately cannot believe Americans got buttmad about this shit.
>>
>>80883573

It's not really censoring though. It's clearing the original dialogue up a bit.

Personally I think the new dialogue flows like shit.

Revisions are only an issue when they actually diminish a work, like The Killing Joke's recoloring, or when the original is refused to the public in favor of a drastically altered version like Star Wars.

This is just a non-issue.
>>
>>80884157
>It's clearing the original dialogue up a bit.
No it's not The original had the clear meaning of "Woah, my impersonator is a DUDE?". This new one has a much more nebulous meaning.
>>
>>80884250
Exactly, the dialogue makes her seem so blase about the reveal, like the fact that chasing around a feminine figure with tits suddenly being revealed as a man isn't a surprise at all. Or even that it's Dagger Type.
>>
Compare the dialogue in the new collected versions of Final Crisis to the dialogue in the originals. This shit happens. Digital distribution just lets them update the corrections like a Steam game instead of just changing it for rereleases.

Oh my God, are you serious? This is akin to fixing a typo that somehow slipped through the editing process.
>>

Anon, please point me to an online store I can purchase TKJ with the original coloring.
>>
Oh my God, did you know the original hobbit had gollum giving Bilbo the ring, and then they retroactively changed it in late printings? We live in Nazi Germany, man! Big brother! Big brother!
>>
>>80884250
she never makes any comment on his gender, it's implied perhaps but it's up to the reader. She could just be stupid enough to be shocked an artist is running around doing this shit. But since the writers have been crucified for this issue since it's release, they might have asked Comixology to make the change so they won't get hassled again
>>
>>80880756

yeah a bit or surprise maybe, but acting like it blew her mind and she couldn't believe it was possible is just out of character for her. She's not captain america a week after being unfrozen

>>80886791
I mean, doesn't Harley Quinn sell better than Batgirl?

I mean, you had one comic where a character was startled and then you have one where a character is misgendered, drawn like this, and smacked in the crotch (because that ONLY hurts if you have testicles, amIrite).

And you will not find ONE SINGLE comic site complaining about it.
>>
>>80886428
So the latter makes her seem like she's preceptive and higly deductive.

When the President lied to start a war that destroyed two nations and threw a chunk of the globe into chaos I said nothing...

But when a company censored my shitty non-sequitur fantasy wrestling comics, they crossed a fucking line.

As an old neckbeard who used video rental stores, both local and chain, I can tell you that those "memberships" was nothing other than marketing research. They wanted to know which mailbox was yours so they could sell that off to junk mail advertisers, and so they could track your movie rentals so they could build up a profile and figure out what kind of coupons to offer you to get you back in the store.
