I keep looking through these expecting to see some element that's actually copy pasted, but no. They're like fingerprints, every single one is just so slightly unique so as to be identifying, the swirls betraying their identity to the trained eye. We could make a game out of this, just cut out one of the catnados and try to figure out which comic it belongs to.
how the fuck do people find heathcliff funny. LIke really, its probably one of the strongest sources of antihumor I've ever seen. It sucks the joy out of me, just by trying to think of how its possibly funny.

I don't get newspaper comics in general. I mean, the classics like Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes, sure, those I can get. They're not Internet-age laugh out loud funny, but they're great for other reasons.
But why were Garfield or Heathcliff ever a thing? Why does Family Circus continue to take up space in print newspapers? It seems they weren't funny even to their target audience, they were rarely ever clever. There's no nostalgia to them. There has to be some sort of explanation for why newspaper comics were like this.

Well yeah, there's a generation divide. But from the perspective of the generation that produced these comics, why? Most of these comics are older than oldfags, Heathcliff was conceived during the Cold War and was passed from uncle to nephew, literally a new generation now handles the comic because it's just that old.
Comic books make sense, old Hanna Barbara makes sense, those were made for a specific audience using ideas prevalent at the time. Newspaper comics, though, why? I feel like there's some interesting history here that explains this strange and dying format.

Never doubt Gallagher's commitment to the craft. He was raised in a family of comic makers, and he alone inherited their greatest legacy. He's even an art professor.
Gallagher is, above all else, a true believer in the medium. He has far too much respect to copy-paste. Every strip is drawn by hand, then inked, colored, and lettered by himself each day.
Let's see some of the hack artists of the Big 2 or some of these fly-by-night "webcomic" creators manage that.

Because only old people are still buying newspapers, and paying a cheap licensing fee to the creators syndicate is easier than hiring your own or seeking third-party publishers or individual cartoonists. Beyond that, they're a tradition.

Historically we used to paint everything red because red paint was cheaper, so really old public buildings (like 1800's old) tend to be red.
The plastic cups we use for parties because they're easier to clean up after, you just toss them in the garbage. If you ask any American why red, they'll just tell you it's because it was the cheapest they had at the store. The store stocks red, so we buy red. Clear and blue cups are also popular, but for whatever reason red's just always been the go-to.
Culturally, I just think it's the default now. If you get a blue cup, people are going to notice it's a blue cup so it makes them think you picked it out on purpose because you like blue or something. If you get red, you're not trying to stand out, you're just getting regular-ass plastic cups for everyone.

Seems like a paper thin later of decorative red plastic on top of the white structural plastic.
It would be thermoformed in one motion, stamped out of 2 converging sheets of plastic.
Thats how I imagine it being manufactured at least. A quick google shows other cups mad in a similar fashion.
Also worth noting there are TONS of other party cups available, some much cheaper, but they tend to be made from inferior plastic that is more likely to crack.

Someone was working on a Heathcliff generator here that would randomly match up captions with the comic.
Not only did it become hard to distinguish the real from the fake, but many times the generated ones had a more obvious joke than the real ones.
