What's the worst thing you can say about Zootopia?
For me, it was how mediocre "Try Everything" was and how there was no alternate song. Gazelle seemed like a one hit wonder in her world.
Ending was too rushed, Bellwether calling in ZPD as soon as she shot Nick was dumb, and was only to end the movie.
>>80812279
>tfw even if the end was rushed, you still think Zootopia is the best movie of all timePlease tell me I'm not a fanboy...
>>80812408
I wouldn't say best movie, but I'm strongly tempted to say best Disney movie of the new millennium
It wasn'tdone in 2D
>>80812238
>too many cliches
>lame villain twist a-la Hans and Turbo
>bad pacing of the second half of the film
>failed attempt to make a tragic background for Nick (IMO)
I enjoyed Zootopia, but it will be hated and forgotten by /co/ just like Frozen is right now, like it or not.
>>80812528
I don't want to believe it...
>>80812528
Except Bellwether had much better motivation than Hans. The only thing Bellwether needed was more menace. And she's cuter

Not enough good species, too many shitty hoof species.
Not enough Finnick.

>>80812581

>>80812238
>Gazelle seemed like a one hit wonder in her world.
MAN, I WONDER WHY
>>80812820
>>80812837
The sex scene felt rushed.Real talk, I second not enough Finnick. I would even ask for a Finnick movie or book spin-off.
>>80812238
Bellwether was underdeveloped as a villain
Nick was underdeveloped as a protagonist
The Nighthowler plot was weird and kinda flimsy in how it all tied together
Finnick didn't get enough play in the story
Gazelle was shoehorned into everything and was more of a set piece than a character
>>80812238
I hated how the DMV scene existed only to eat up a ridiculous chunk of Judy's time and keep the pacing frantic
Speaking of which, did Judy and Nick really stay up for two-ish days straight?
Can I get a reverse Island of Dr. Moreau where instead of turning them into animals he turns them all into one identical apex species? Is Val Kilmer dead yet?
>>80812238
They got Shakira to voice Gazelle instead of Adele or Estelle.
>>80812238
I think they should have shown the predator fear getting so bad that Zootopia actually implemented or was about to implement the shock collars. That idea was sorta wasted
>>80812987
I actually believe so.
>>80813025
I would love to see Bellwether turning into alioness
I wonder if she'd hate it, or go mad with power.
i love nick
hes super cute
Okay but what if this was hand animated? Everything is exactly the same, they just did classic hand drawn cel animation for it all.
The ice/tundra neighborhood was right next to the desert neighborhood. Basic laws of thermodynamics means that those really shouldn't be next to each other because they'd give huge wastage trying to compensate for the desert heat transfering to the ice neighborhood. At the very least, ice should be melted near that wall.

>>80812238
I actually really like "Try Everything" more now that I've seen the movie. It puts me in this "I'm going to Zootopia!" feeling, and it brings me a little hint of happiness...
>>80812528
Zootopia didn't exactly do anything outstandingly new or original, in terms of all of the tropes and cliches. It just did them well.
I think it may be benefiting from theFIM Effectin that the commercials make it seem like "LOL WACKY CRAZY ANIMAL WORLD!!" but the actual movie is so much better than that, so it seems really good in comparison to your expectations.
Is this movie worth it? I haven't watched it yet.
>>80813160
>>80813116
Apart from it most likely flopping? Not much. It would just be more of a cult film than a huge blockbuster. It would just give Disney another reason to say "this is why we don't do 2D".

This. I gave that show you mentioned a shot because of the creator behind it. I love her works and I'll give anything she does a genuine, honest, chance. Glad I did because it's cute and, for what it is, well done in my opinion.
I thought Zootopia might be cute and have a few enjoyable moments, but I was wrong. It was cute and enjoyable the entire time. The story was more mature than I expected which it didn't have to be yet feel it benefited a lot for it.
I don't think it'll be forgotten or brushed aside so easy. In of itself it's just a great movie with some really good story elements. People loved the shit out of Frozen and while I liked it I did most certainly hate things like the trolls and the snowman. Zootopia had none of that shit. Not a single thing in the film felt like it didn't belong.

Taste of course is subjective, but I can easily see this movie as "Best Animated Movie of all Time" to a lot of people. I'll call you a fanboy when an objectively mediocre TV show is made and you love it.
They used the 'animals using modern technology' bit too much. Pretty much every scene had a character holding a smartphone or tablet. It's the same with BoJack Horseman but that show is aimed at adults so it's more acceptable.
>>80812408
"Best movie of all time" is pushing it a lot.
"Best Disney movie in the past 10 years" is more reasonable.

>Carrots, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by predators. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Hopps? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Clawhauser and you curse the mayor. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know, that Clawhauser's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! You don't want the truth, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall. We use words like "honor", "code", "loyalty". We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to prey that rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you", and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up your badge, and work a hustle. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

And they seemed to really drag that explanation out, too. All we needed was a quick shot of Bellweather opening up the gun to see blueberries and then look back at Nick holding the pellet while Judy grins and says "It's called a hustle, sweetheart." A couple of seconds, ten at tops.
It was just alright. It followed tropes well but did most of them adequately.
Zooptopia just seems like a regular decent movie.

It's features a style of cartoon that is barely tolerated on /co/, especially with how fan artists use it, is a disney movie, and already has several calls for fanfictions from the threads. /frz/ was overloaded with incest lesbian art and fics that it broke /co/'s mind. Zootopia threads are about discussing the movie and filled with cute Judy X Nick art and fics, also a surprising lack of porn.

>>80812238
I feel like it couldn't really figure out what it was supposed to be about. It really didn't break from the western animation trope of needing to teach a lesson but it had like 3-4 lessons and I'm not really sure what the take-away was supposed to be by the end. Don't stereotype? Follow your dreams? Equality means equality for everyone?

"Anyone can be anything" means people besides you. It's nice to see it as an uplifting message but it's not necessarily personal, and if you're like Judy who thinks that she gets to break social barriers but predators can't then you're being an unfair hypocrite.
Follow your dreams, yeah, but that's kind of a given.
>>80813239
I'm really considering heading to the movies instead of waiting for a torrent at this point.
I remember how bummed /co/ was when we found out that focus was taken from Nick to Judy in the rewrites. I'm still of that sentiment. With what had since been revealed about the older drafts, the Zootopia we got was pretty cheap and vanilla.
The older one seemed to have more of a realistic approach to social issues regarding anthropomorphic animals living together. Predators would have shock collars and there was more focus on the divided environments. It would've been neat to see a struggle of the animals *obtain* a peaceful status quo rather than *maintain*.
The Zootopia we actually got felt more like a sequel. The remnants of that initial draft was only in the third act with Nick and Judy's conflict after the press conference, so no wonder it felt like a cheap tack-on.
But we still got something OK, I guess.
>>80813888

>>80814157
Frozen was also in theaters for like 8 months
Zootopia has been out for less than one month and almost certainly wont stay out that long
>>80814234
If they adapted the original version into a book, would you read it?
Gazelle in general seemed forced, like they really wanted to have her in there for some reason.
>>80814226
Do it! Help it beat Minions.
>>80812238
I cringed when Gazelle showed up as a good-guy activist and even made a whole speech about it that helped Judy realize shit
In the theater i went like "thank God Shakira's here to save the day!"
I didn't mind the song, but it was weird to me to give any sort of further relevance to the glorified celebrity cameo
Other than that i think shit went too fast after the revelation of the villain, but that one is understandable considering the movie's pretty long for an animated Disney feature

/frz/ was the Frozen General.
At the start they discussed the movie, talking about things that happened in it, compared it to the older ideas of the movie, discusssed the character development and so on.
Then about two months after it came out it was all about lesbians and r9k posters wishing a character that had five minutes of screen time was real. And then it continued on four six more months.
>>80814278
Hell yeah
>>80814278
Not that anon, but yes. It might do better as a book because then it wouldn't need to conform to modern Disney's style that involves touching on serious issues but not fully exploring them out of fear of alienating children and families.
>>80814210
That's actually a very neutral message. Anyone can be a monster. Anyone can be a hero. It's almost a non-statement but it speaks to the chaos of our "messy" world.
>>80814210
Yeah that's true. That kind covers everything.
>>80814234
I'd say the opposite of pretty much all of that. Shock collars wouldn't really be realistic because that's not even close to how prejudice is today.
Prejudice is really undertone and subtle today, and very few people are blunt about it.
It's not about them being animals that makes them prejudice, it's mainly about how they used to be.
>>80814313
>wishing a character that had five minutes of screen time

I can't think of any character in the movie that was only onscreen for five minutes besides the background servants or the snow golem.

It's hardly edgy to look for reasons that predators would be able to tamp down their predatory instincts. No, but in a universe where they show us that animals used to be just like they are in the real world, it helps to understand how they got from animal-like to sapient.
If they'd gotten rid of that school play at the beginning and just established that there are prejudices that exist concerning predator and prey relations then you wouldn't need an explanation.
>>80814522
I think it's a mix of advertisement and people that don't look into things before they see a movie.
>>80814553
I wouldn't consider the play as an explanation, but more an introduction.
>>80812797
This reminds me of the episode of Kung Fu Panda where Song tried to seduce Po and attempts to do the Lady and the Tramp trick using a bowl of noodles. Her whole head ends up in Po's mouth.

At least Zootopia is a definite success. Less-successful movies from disney have had sequels and series.

But prejudice amongst various subspecies is not the same as prejudice amongst predators and prey.
Movies like The Fox and the Hound and The Land Before Time understood this. If you're going to make a movie about natural life struggles involving cartoon animals, you should at least put the associated characters on the same levels of the food chain.
And movies like Robin Hood, Kung Fu Panda, Jungle Book, and The Lion King got away with it because their focuses were on other subjects. However, in Zootopia's case, when your message of social acceptance is made through a natural circle of life that the world strives on, then your message falls flat.
Why is Judy so much easier to draw then Nick?
