couldn't you at least have used a slightly different render

Good movie. Bashed to death because normies liked it.
>>
>>80808705
I could give less of a shit if normies liked it or not. I didn't like it because of the songs.
>>
Good movie. Little overhyped.

Female characters' hotness is vastly overrated.

Start a bit of a negative trend for Disney, villain wise.

>Start a bit of a negative trend for Disney, villain wise.

>>
>>80808957

It's like, before, you had guys like Scar and Frollo. They waltz in and you immediately know, "Oh, he's a villain".

With this, they started the trend of "no obvious villain, turns out it's the seemingly harmless side character that was seemingly only there for plot".

See also: King Candy, the teacher in Big Hero 6, and Ms. Belleweather in Zootopia.

They're kinda getting in a rut.
>>
Didn't care for the story, especially the parts about the gnome rock things. The villain wasn't very interesting to me. Generally I feel the film is overrated and Tangled deserves more popularity than it.
>>
>>80809060
I don't care if the villain is a flamingo as long as they have a good villain song.
Frozen didn't even try, so it's...not my favorite
>>
>>80809060
I thought King Candy was done pretty well. And he was already an antagonist before going Turbo.
>>
>>80809157

True. He's a slight exception.

The rest fit, though.

Haven't seen Zootopia, but do I agree on BH6. Didn't care for that character's quick turnaround either.

What about The Princess and the Frog? Facilier was a classic, obvious villain, and he even died a classic villain's death.
>>

That came out before Frozen. Frozen is the first one to do it.

I guess that all makes sense. PATF didn't do great while Frozen murdered the box office, so they'll just keep repeating the fundamentals of Frozen until the next obscenely profitable movie.

King Candy was great. The teacher in BH6 was lame as fuck because they made it fucking obvious and acted like it was some big reveal.

Anyway, am I the only one who thought Hans was completely pointless as a villain? Like he could have been a legitimate good guy and the story would have barely needed to change. She'd just kiss him and realize they didn't have true love. Then while he runs off to try and find help, Olaf helps her out of the room and you replace Hans in the final confrontation with those guys who tried to kill Elsa earlier. It just felt like the only reason they made Hans a villain was so nobody would be sad for him when Kristoff worked better for Anna. And honestly it kind of goes against their theme of falling in love on a whim by making him a dick rather than just showing that their relationship wasn't going to work in the first place.
>>
>>80809060
Bellwether was definitely the worst offender of it. Mostly because we saw so little of her and got so little backstory, even after her reveal.
>>
>>80811775
While I do agree that a large part of Hans' change was due to setting Kristoff and Anna up, the movie doesn't have the same emotional impact if you remove his betrayal.

Hans and Elsa are set up as opposites: the former is charming, charismatic, and claims to love Anna, whereas the latter is nervous, insular, and appears to reject Anna. He "accepts" Anna because he is selfish and wants her for her connection to the crown, while Elsa rejects Anna because she cares about Anna's wellbeing and needs to keep her safe.

Without Hans' betrayal Anna's sacrifice has less meaning because through that sacrifice Anna is showing Elsa that she, too, now understands that love is more than just showering people with affection like Hans does to her, but about giving up what's important for the hope that it will help. It's not just that Elsa is in danger: Anna has to be literally confronting her now destroyed fantasy of love at first sight in order to save the woman who, despite everything, actually did love her. It's Anna saying no to a selfish character with a selfless act right after he brought her to her lowest point.
>>
>>80811775
>Anyway, am I the only one who thought Hans was completely pointless as a villain?
No you're not alone. You wouldn't even need to replace him, just set it up so he genuinely cares for Anna, even if it's not "true love." He honestly believes that the only way to save Anna and Arendelle is by killing Elsa. He doesn't WANT to kill her, but it's necessary. So Hans would be in the wrong, but not bad. I think it's a worthwhile message to teach kids. Just because someone is going about something the wrong way, doesn't mean it's malicious or that they're evil.
>>
>>80811975
We don't really need her backstory. We saw that she got ignored or ridiculed by the mayor, that she got stuck in a shitty little "office", that she babbles to Judy about the "little guys" and how excited she is to see that Judy has made it as a police officer. Her motives are pretty damn clear: she doesn't like that she gets pushed around because she's prey, and a small one at that, and wants more.

Nuh uh
>>
>>80812051
Yeah but nothing of it pointed towards directly towards villainy. Judy was in the exact same position as her and their work ethics and morals seemed to line up the same way. If anything Judy was more gloryhungry than Bellwether seemed before the reveal
>>
>>80812126
That's true, I'll give you that. So we have motive but not much in the way of character.

I don't remember: did Bellweather stage the press conference herself? If she did, and encouraged Judy with how well she did, then that would suggest her dislike of predators.
>>
>>80812191
Ironically the only one who gave Judy advice or direction before her speech was Nick, advice she ignored and went on her own little accidental predator rant
>>
>>80808832
Nah King Candy was the start
>>
>>80811775
The problem is IMO that if Hans had been a good guy, or even a semi-decent guy, it might have put Anna in a questionable light for going and falling in love with a hunky peasant ice harvester while she had a perfectly nice fiance at home (who she sang a true love's duet with), faithfully remaining in charge for her, keeping her citizens safe etc.

So, it was necessary for him to be a douche and an asshole to remove all inklings of Anna's behaviour being the least bit reprimandable.
>>
Frozen didn't need a villain. There was enough confusion and fear to give probable excuses for any sort of actions that the plot needed. Anna comes to the realization that she's being too hasty about romance to tie up things with Hans and Kristoff is played off as a platonic friend.

>>
>>80811975
You're full of shit, Anonymous. We understand Bellweather's motivation far more than we understand Hans's. He's just a dick because he's a dick.
>>
>>80815119
Hans mentions being the youngest of thirteen brothers and that he'll clearly never have his own throne unless he marries, so his ambition is pretty obvious. He went to Arendelle because it had two single royal women. He let Anna die because there was nothing he could do to stop that and was going to kill Elsa because he believed that would end the winter and save Arendelle, which he wanted for his own. The issues with legal succession aside, his motivation is pretty clear: he wanted to be king.
>>
>>80815219
I know /that/. I meant we don't know why he would do it all villainously. i.e., why he's a dick.
I guess I could have been more clear.
>>
>>80815298
Because he's Elsa's foil. He is the smiling acceptance who hides selfishness as compared to her fearful isolation that hides love, and both of those characters are important for Anna's growth.
>>
>>80815119
Well, no, we have the horrid family background and the desire to find his own place, the ambition to get a throne and be seen as a hero, and Jennifer Lee stating that Hans is a tragic character because he's the product of growing up without love.
>>
>>80815520
>Jennifer Lee stating that Hans is a tragic character because he's the product of growing up without love.
While director remarks are interesting, a movie still has to stand alone. I can still understand why Hans does what he does, but I wouldn't cite Lee's statements simply because there's no basis in the movie for them. The closest you'll get is Hans' comment that two of his brothers treated him as invisible for two years.
>>
>>80815520
>Hans is a tragic character because he's the product of growing up without love.
That just seems like bullshit retroactive interpretation. If that were the case, not much would set him apart from Elsa and Anna, who grew up without parents or each other.

>>80815648
>a movie still has to stand alone
Agreed. If that was her intention, it was conveyed poorly in the movie.
>>
>>80809108
"Let It Go" WAS the villain song.

Then they felt so bad for her because of the song they made her co-hero.
