Apache Chief/Long Shadow isn't even a comic book character, he was made by Hanna-Barbara specifically for the Super Friends cartoon. Gotta give it to DC Animation for always finding a way to throw this and the other Hanna-Barbara heroes in during team-up shows.
That said, he should really be introduced into the mainstream comics, I don't think he ever was. He's the only DC hero I know that can grow to become a giant, has a mystic angle that could be explored and has a generally (or potential) unique design and look that can be utilized.

Virgil never whined, he always enjoyed his superpowers, it was very true to his character. I don't think Asami complained much either, but I don't speak Japanese. And Eduardo had legit grievances with how his own father treated him because of his powers. To be honest, if you're gonna explore the idea of teens getting powers and ultimately rejecting the whole capes-and-mask lifestyle in a DC show, it makes sense to use the expies of third-party characters that've faded into obscurity.
