Nothing. The comics are for adults and they're funny, the LucasArts game is for teens and it's hilarious, the cartoon is for kids and it's funny, and the Telltale games are for idiots and they're meh.
All in all a successful indie franchise.

Purcell was working for media giant LucasArts before that, and that didn't stymie his creativity. Pixar had nothing to do with the "demise" of Sam & Max, which never really demised.
