Why are people so divided about this show?
What are the good aspects of it?
How is the fandom different on here than on Tumblr/Reddit etc?
The show is okay. I could do without the chiptune music and crying, though. As far as the fandom is concerned, it's all toxic as shit no matter where you go. The only question is, which is worse, the Undermeme fandom or the SU faggots?

I hypothesize it has to do with the perceived "social justice" aspects on the show during a bad political time (the overemphasis on political correctness in Western countries). Which causes people to be biased towards hating it or finding negative things to botch about when others just want to discuss the damn show. When I started watching it (I.e., when it first aired) I didn't think it would blow up so much or that /co/ would feel so much as shirt from this innocuous show.
I think something good about the show is that it cares about character dynamics and laying out meaningful themes. I don't consider myself part of /sug/, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some overlap with r/stevenuniverse and Tumblr.

I think the final nail in the coffin was that incident from last year when Tumblr's portion of the fandom organized attacks on some teenager just because she drew Rose Quartz as thin woman and it nearly led to the kid's suicide.
Even after the ordeal, the people responsible for it were acting smug and self-righteous about it and when Rebecca Sugar and Ian JQ called them out on it, the Tumblr fandom called them pedophile and rape enablers just because they stood in defense of a traumatized kid.

The show is pretty good, but most of /co/ is fucking hipster, so everytime something is terribly popular, or perceived to be so, posters turn on it like rabid dogs.
It has themes of body positive, space lesbians, genderfluid, ect ect.
So naturally, it attracts a certain group of insufferable people.
Take all that away though (and i really don't see any problem with any of those themes by themselves since they come naturally to the storyline) and it's a highly developed and realized show with probably the biggest heart on tv.

It's a nice show that's subjectively brought down by a shitty fanbase trying to project themselves onto it and make it something it isn't. Try it out for yourself; the rest of this thread will do nothing but turn you off from it.
It a really great show I'd recommend to anyone. It's nice eye candy when it comes to color choices and character building.
It's a good show, therefore it obligated to have a negative side to it's fandom. That's anything that's a decent show and popular. In this case, it's tumblr, an easy ass target, being super defensive about this show because it's showing actual good morals, and has a lesbian couple that has more than once kissed ON SCREEN. Not to push away other already LGBT cartoon characters but this is a major milestone for cartoons.
Cartoon media has declared showing gay characters showing that they actually care about each other is a no-no. Because television censorship is too much of wimpy dicks and pussies to deal with bible humpers wining that their children are being exposed to gayness on facebook.
So of course, the sjw side of tumblr has to treat this show as their cinnamon roll covered child and hiss at anything that isn't "progressive" in this show. Its fucking stupid but thank god Rebecca doesn't give a shit those idiots and does what she wants. Seeing this show shut down due to it's obnoxious fanbase would be the worst.
In short: This show is really good at showing important subjects without being super obvious about it. I always tell people to ignore the fanbase and give the show a chance.

SU is a show made for kids and teens that has acceptance as it's main theme. SUX (SU extremists) will attack kids and teens who draw characters that slightly deviate from the bodypositive worldview by making a character slightly thinner or shipping them as a straight couple or something. Seriously strawmanning aside, I can tell you three main reasons without going "muh tumblr" why the show is at least overrated.
The drama is okay but it does become a bit formulaic. Pearl having separation anxiety from Rose makes her needy and leads to a psychotic break, Amethyst feeling insecure because she wants to be a firebrand against conformity but deep down wants to be accepted and will conform to others/reject them. Garnet being seen as the paragon but in actuality her fusion is actually hard knock life and being the strong but caring bear.
It's not bad in itself but it normally goes something something feels, gems can't process and breakdown, steven's hug/love snaps them out the funk, gem defeats problem, steven or gem laughs or looks at/off camera and fades to starry black. Gets kinda boring once you can predict the plot less than a minute in the show.
Second is the time slots. For what Rebecca wants I honestly can't see it being done right in 11 minute episodes without becoming hollow fluff. There is canon contrary to other's opinions (which I enjoy) but unless the episode is a season finale or maybe a slight backstory episode, nothing really feels meshed together. It feels like a lot of life lessons are shown but never really learned and have to be repeated with a slight twist (especially S2 episodes).
Thirdly is the concept of Steven as a whole. I'm okay with an annoying kid who's just living their life but he normally comes off either as a kid who just stumbles into saying the right thing to a young adult that knows what's going on and can formulate his own plans and enact them to teach other people lessons. Now you could argue that this is being a kid but it comes off kinda hollow to know that this kid can think and act like an adult when it's needed but we have to wait for the gem/steven breakdown for him to show up rather than seeing him be proactive and use previous life lessons to prevent at least some of the problems him/gems gets into.
