It's a form of mole known as a congenital melanocytic nevus. Or "a mole you have from birth"
Fortunately he got it removed. Because his village viewed it as some form curse or similar, and he wasn't allowed to go to school or be baptised.
He's still got other, smaller moles, but the big one which covered more than half his body's gone.

The sad thing is that from the trailer it seemed somewhat interesting, John Goodman's always good and the premise of a family (?) surviving in some sort of bomb shelter during a paranormal event of some sort has promise. That they had to stick Cloverfield onto it sort of just dashes my hopes.
Best case scenario, it could be a case where the studio just had this small budget movie that they weren't sure would perform well so they added Cloverfield to the title for name recognition without actually forcing anything from Cloverfield in there.
