>Anomalisa, Dick Williams' latest effort and World of Tomorrow got nominated
Granted, chances are none of those will win (especially not Anomalisa), but it's a step in the right direction.
>>
>>78978397
>Inside Out also nominated for Best Original Screenplay

Then it's ogre, it already won
>>
Best Animated Feature Oscars are the joke of the ceremony. Voters don't really care and often just for whatever's popular.
>>
>>78978512
It's a non-sequel Pixar movie. It already won before the movie even came out.
>>
>>78978514
>Best Animated Feature Oscars are the joke of the ceremony
>Not the entire Oscars Award Ceremony itself
That award ceremony is the pinnacle of the gilded cage that is Hollywood and its practices. It lost all meaning at least two decades ago.
>>
>>78978514
That's pretty much what happens with every category. Majority of the voters really don't care.

Jesus I didn't even know about this Ghibli film, I'm genuinely slippin', In used to be all over this shit
>>
>>78978487
No, this is Leo's year. They'll vote for him because he hasn't won one yet and they'll feel bad.
>>
Not entirely concerned about Inside Out being the only reasonable contender because a) The "Best Animated Feature" category is inherently a joke of a category (not that the entire ceremony itself isn't the same) and b) at least it's a good film and not a mediocre offering like past winners Brave, Frozen and Big Hero 6.

The short category is much more interesting, though if "Best Animated Short Film" is to be interpreted as the short film with the best animation, then Prologue walks away with the prize easily because HOLY SHIT RICHARD WILLIAMS IS THE MOST TALENTED ANIMATOR ALIVE
>>
>>78978619
I liked it but it was definitely worse than Princess Kaguya. Both in terms of story and art. Still worth watching though.
>>
>>78978604
A contest where the jury has no obligation to see every nominees before taking a decision makes no sense. You can't even say that the results reflect the jury's taste has they didn't "taste" everything.

No, it's about friendship. Sort of like Kids on the Slope where you get this gay vibe but they're completely straight.

The whole movie makes it look like that too. Guess you'll just have to watch it and find out.

Anomalisa should win. It won't, but it should.

Any bets that Eddie Redmayne is going to win again. Just to prove the theory that anyone can win a Oscar if they played someone who struggled being crippled, gay, or trans?
>>
>>78978922
>Heavily promote movie
>Movie becomes more well known
>Movie wins Oscar because it's a popularity contest
>Oscar becomes free promotion for Movie
The contest is basically "Best Ad-campaign" and the prize for winning is more Ads.
>>
>>78978971
Well, at least in trailer, he makes a convincing trans.
>>
>>78978856
If you say that Pixar is Disney, I guess but...

Disney's only gotten one award for Animation.
Pixar has Eight wins
Nickolodeon has one win
Studio Ghibli has one win
DreamWorks has one (two if you count Wallace and Gromet, but they share that with Aardman Animations)
And then there's Happy Feet, but I don't really know who you'd say won that, Animal Logic I guess?
>>
>>78979242
Disney has two wins, Big Hero 6 won last year.
>>
>>78979305
oh, right that was Disney, wasn't it?
Then Disney has two and Pixar has seven.
>>
I hope THR interviews the guy who hates CHINESE FUCKING SHITS again
>>
>>78979242
Happy Feet was WB.

We should also note that we live in a ridiculous universe where it's possible that George Miller can win an Oscar for Happy Feet but potentially walk away with nothing for Fury Road.
>>
>>78979365
I thought WB only distributed the movie outside of Australia?
>>
>>78978397
This is a much better list compared to last year, any film can win and not get snobbed.

How do you guys stay informed on all the newer indie animated films that are released throughout the year? Boy and the World flew completely under the radar for me, I've never even heard of it before today. Are there forums or sites that discuss the more obscure side of contemporary animated cinema?
>>
>>78980473
To be fair, Boy & The World is two years old, it only just got a US release recently, so most people on /co who'd be interested in it would have already watched it quite some time ago.

This. Ghibli lost two years in a row to fucking Frozen and Big Hero 6.
>>
>>78987385
If it can work like this in one category then the whole system is flawed. I remember seeing a statement from an academy member that they voted for a film in the foreign film category solely because he liked the poster, and had not actually seen any of the films in that category at all.
>>
>>78987474

Wind Rises and especially Kaguya weren't good movies. They didn't deserve to win anything.
>>
>>78987474
Frozen was too big not to loose, that came from a million miles away. BH6 beating Kaguya and Song of the Sea was a real joke though.
>>
It should be Shaun The Sheep that wins. It was a silent masterpiece.
>>
>>78987589

there is no way Anomalisa isn't going to win. It's a fucking Kaufman movie.

>>78978788
Yeah Kids on the Slope was pretty damn gay. If anything, the way they shoehorned the girl into the story took away from how incredible the bromance was. I honestly don't care if they're gay or not, but the foundation of that series was the two male friends and nothing should have distracted from it.

Reminder that the Academy voters voted for 12YAS before watching it because white guilt.

Also Madoka Rebellion was disqualified for being too violent kids but Anomalisa, which features a graphic sex scene, is allowed?

That's a good thing.

It's not just that though. The Academy always votes for what they think the Academy should pick, not what they thought was the best movie.

Pic related. I enjoyed this movie, but I doubt the people who voted for the Academy bothered to watch a silent movie.

It'd be interesting if the Academy voted based on the shit they actually watched and enjoyed.

I'm not much of a fan of Inarritu, because he's a Jerk, but I really liked this one, way more than Birdman, I hope only leo and Lubezki win
>>
>>78990686
>If we filmed the whole thing in front of greenscreen while sipping coffee it would be a good time, but the movie would be shit.
So he put the crew through hell for the sake of his own ego.
And I think The Revenant will win best actor, cinematography and picture, but Miller will get best director.
>>
>>78978397
I feel really bad for Richard Williams. His work in animation is so beautiful, but I just don't see him as a storyteller.

I feel like he became obsessed with animation, obsessed with the tool rather than the work, like a cinematographer obsessing over the quality of the camera so much that they ignore the basic composition and character of the film, that is to tell a story through imagery.

Recobbled was incredible to watch, but it's not something that sticks to me. There's no story! I mean, someone like Rockwell tells a story through a single portrait. I don't know. It just feels like Williams is a master of the frosting rather than the cake itself. I really hope I'm proven wrong and he makes something incredible, and that he's able to fucking finish it!

I would not say Frozen deserved to beat Wind Rises or Ernest and Celestine, as both of those are great. Inside Out I really did love, but I'd be more than happy with Marnie or Anomalisa winning.
