It's the promise of an intriguing, complex character who's not wishy-washy nice or "qute and quirky". I'm really interested in her wartime memories. Also the promise of the future conflict of allegiances draws me in, she's so loyal and fierce and arrogant about crushing her enemies it should be interesting to see her actually come to terms with changing sides to the enemy.
It's an interesting mindset, combined with the wonderful brutal attitude and lust for battle. She's a warrior, but apparently has somewhat lofty ideals, what with the "cheap tactic" and "I respected your tactics but was still looking forward to POUNDING YOU INTO THE GROUND". Interesting mix.

This - of all the homeworld gems I think Jasper has the most potential for an interesting backstory and path to redemption (or betrayal, or straight up consistent villainy).
Peridot is a low class techie whose technology belied a weak, fragile core, an easy convert.
Lapis was either a prisoner of war or a deserter and doesn't really want anything to do with Homeworld or the Crystal Gems.
But Jasper? As far as we know, Jasper was a loyal soldier to the bitter end of the war with the Crystal Gems, and is clearly a respected and powerful member in the gem hierarchy. She's fiercely competitive but isn't above giving her enemies their due respect and admiration. There's a LOT of potential there.

I'm a huge fan of Jasper. I think it would be neat if she was either:

In the The Return, she walks out of her hand spaceship in a cape and is shown to be a battle-hardened veteran. She then berates the CG before dispatching Garnet, who was widely seen as the most capable fighter in the series thus far, albeit with a taser.
I really like her round face in this pic and especially how it changes to ecstatic violence at the start of the fight. Her weapon gives her a pompadour which she fits into her straightforward fighting style well. She still might be a part of Pink Diamond, or heavily involved, who knows. Personally I expect some kind of special-fusion, not quite with another gem, but with another something that turns a worthy gem into a Diamond Gem. Would be a good way to involve Bismuth as a fusion catalyst. Admittely this is all theory with no real basis, it really could be anything.

The ruby gems show that the gem locations aren't dependent on the gems of their masters.
Pearls are made-to-order; it's possible the diamonds wanted their own pearls to look like them, whereas Rose didn't care that much and was fine with a forehead placement for her Pearl.
I don't think the gem placement is significant enough to warrant any theories. The "Pearl was a WD gem" is built SOLELY around the gem placement, but the Rubies having the gems wherever shows that the placement isn't that big of a deal.

SU has been pretty good about keeping rigid status quo at a minimum. Most of the characters are demonstrating degrees of development, arcs have payoffs into further arcs instead of abruptly cutting off, and even episodic filler-y stuff (Joy Ride) usually leads into something bigger.
Hell, I'm not really sure what I'd call the status quo at this point. I guess maybe Steven and the Gems fighting monsters was the status quo of Season 1, before it transitioned to being about the Diamonds, but even then, Steven didn't regularly go on missions until Serious Steven and didn't start using his powers until Ocean Gem.
I think the closest thing to a "snap back to status quo" that you could name was House Guest, and the status quo there was "Steven cannot invalidate the one thing that can cause the Gems real harm," so I'd say that was the right call.
