I know you already you said you're okay with Rucka's change, but really how much was lost from it? Some propose The Punisher was born in the war, some propose he was born in the park, both interpretations are valid, I do think the latter allows for a lot more wiggle room in terms of what war he comes from.

The vietnam background I found it more interesting because of Frank, this soldier that comes from a generation that got rejected when it comes home, and then when he comes back he only finds more violence in his life, by getting his family kill.
