So I finally finished watching the Disney Shorts collection earlier this evening, and there was a short called "The Ballad of Nessie." I think the key to what makes Nessie cute, to me at least is that she reminds me of a specific type of girl who I'd often find myself surrounded by when I was in school. The sort of nerdy artist types who were a bit tomboyish.

Winnie the Pooh should have been released around Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter. That's generally when families are looking for a chill and inclusive activity that they can do with the young ones in tow. That's why Peanuts was able to make $250 million while Winnie the Pooh only made $26 million. You need to know your market, and what kind of activities you need to schedule your release around.
Winnie the Pooh is not the kind of movie you can just bury in a summer full of big-budget blockbusters and expect it to be a success. It's quite possibly the most poorly handled Disney release since The Black Cauldron. In fact adjusted for inflation, Black Cauldron made about twice as much money as Winnie the Pooh.

I get what you mean though. Nessie seems pure and innocent and part of me doesn't really want to see her deflowered, or at least not in a way that would be out of character for her or demeaning.

It's actually 1 hour and 3 minutes. If it was less than an hour long then it wouldn't even be feature-length. A feature-length movie must be at least 60 minutes long, although I suppose with a short attached I suppose you could pad up a film less than 60 minutes long up to the necessary length for theatrical release.
