Tell me about 2000AD.

Should I bother reading their stuff? Is it good? Is it dated? Is it an 80s flash in the pan?

>Should I bother reading their stuff? Is it good?
Yes you bloody well should, m8. I just hope you're not American and can appreciate/understand satire in sci-fi cyber punk setting.

>Is it dated?
Well the old stuff is, yeah. But that's part of the charm!

>Is it an 80s flash in the pan?
And the kitchen sink.
>>
>>78657191
Start with The Best of Tharg's Future Shocks, I think. Then do what you like. The new issue out this week (1962, I believe) is a jumping on point with five new stories.

Make sure you buy some of their products to support the last remaining British anthology.

Is there a way to get them digitally?

Thanks m8

Are Brit comics good on the whole?

>Are brit comics good?
>Who is Grant Morrison
>Who is Alan Moore
>Who is Neil Gaiman

But nah 2000ad much like DC or Marvel have their fantastic stories and their awful stories. Dredd is still good long past the 80's. Infact some of his best stories such as Origins and America were written in the 2000'ds
>>
i bought one of those comics for it back when i was 8 in 2006

i should look for it again
>>
>>78659102
2000AD is certainly the best of the bunch, Warrior was also great, it was our equivalent of Heavy Metal, and it's where V for Vendetta and a few other Alan Moore stories first ran.
>>
>>78659163
Just because some good writers are British doesn't mean British comics as a whole are good.
>>
>>78659163
Almost. Even the bad 2000AD is more competent than bad stuff from the big two.
>>
>>78657191
>Is it good?
Yes, it's recovered from a dip in quality in the late 90s/early00s.

>Is it dated?
No more than any other comic. DC still think heroes wearing their undies on the outside is cool for instance.

>Is it an 80s flash in the pan?
80s 2000AD might have been the best thing ever in print comics. Every week. We're just never likely to ever see stuff of that quality consistently put out for your eyes to devour ever again. Nothing can really compare to it. The current stuff is running along fine though.

Yes. Though the very early stuff can be really cheesy and dodgy, and a lot of it is certainly derivative, it all has a gleeful sense of insanity and over the top, hyper condensed action throwing wild new concepts at machinegun pace while still having very strong characters grounding every strip.
There's a dip in quality around the early 90s, but it picks back up fast enough, and lately they've been going through a very nice new golden age of great strips by great creators.

That's really well done. Were the brits more into edgy comics back then?
>>
>>78657191
2000 AD has been in a creative rut for a while with few new characters, artists, or writers. Overall, their late 80's and early 90's stuff is probably the best that European comics has to offer

2000AD was a bit of an outlier for its time, a boys comic that was much more violent and edgy than its contemporaries. It was ostensibly aimed for ten year olds and such, but they really pushed that envelope to a breaking point.

It says a lot about 2000AD that despite having that dip in the 90's that at the same time they started some really great stuff. Even when they've dropped the ball 2000AD can still make quality

Mostly with some fantasy a bit of steampunk and a smattering of horror.

Not really
I'd add Jaegir myself, but I haven't seen /co/ discuss it that much so I don't know what other people think of it

It was "edgy" in the sense that it was very adult, with gristly black humor scattered throughout. Not "edgey" in the sense of being "try hard grim derp"
