But I see what you mean, there's different forms realism can take. But in the visual design department, I'd still argue that the old movies go for more "authentic-looking" space fleet uniforms than the tunic-and-pants design of the new ones, being more reminiscent of naval design and having much more different types of uniform.

I actually feel like that was its biggest fault. They were so concerned with shot-for-shot accuracy that they didn't bother to adapt anything.
Cinematography is more than just reenacting panels, it has to be rearranged, rewritten, and re-edited to accommodate the new medium, and there was absolutely none of that. It felt like there was no actual director involved, they just lined up all the shots the way they were in the book.

Sherlock and Strange are vastly different characters, and only because you like one of them doesn't mean it will be the perfect fit for the other. At least with Phoenix one could be sure of a level of acting that Cumberbatch simply doesn't posses. And it's not like I dislike Cumberbatch, it's just that I seriously doubt he would have been the BEST choice for the character. But it doesn't matter now, anyway. And I'm sure he'll do fine.
