The swinging doesn't bother me that much because it's not too strange to swing a sword like a bat, but the stance really does annoy me, and holding it to their side isn't that wrong when it's not a duel, but why oh why do they keep holding the lightsabers so close to their heads?

A lightsaber is nearly weightless.
Any momentum you have is with your arm and the hilt, not the blade. If the saber is deflected at all (by certain materials, or another saber) it is flying out of your hand.
Unless you know what you are doing, a lightsaber is a shit weapon.
