So what's your opinion on this thing? Is it worth it? Are there better books, is this just a meme book? Is it outdated?

>Is it outdated?
yes it's about 2D animation, no one cares about that shit anymore
>>
It is a good book, but if you have an ipad I would recommend you get the digital version, which has a bunch of extra stuff (including clips from the $500 + DVD version).
>>78555881
It can actually be used for a lot of different kinds of animations.

Animation graduate here, I found it great to flip through every now and again for some neat tips, although I found it a bit impractical to carry down to the studio every day at university. The digital version sounds like a good thing to opt for.
>>
I think it's a very useful book with lots and lots of references, so I can definitely recommend it. The rules for good 2D and 3D animation aren't all that different.

If you are set on getting the book version, I would look for the Expanded edition which 'includes more on animal action, invention and realism with sophisticated animation examples'

>digital version
Here's the link for that:
https://itunes.apple.com/book/the-animators-survival-kit/id952265240
It's $30, but it's worth it since it has clips from his DVD edition.

Don't you feel like the physical version has a lot more value somehow? I know it may seem dumb and unpractical and I know what you mean but it definitely seems nicer and more real for me to be able to touch and carry the thing around, even if that means not accessing the video features.
>>
>>78556069
Well with the digital version you can do stuff like going through the animation examples frame by frame and it's cheaper then getting the physical copy.
>>
>The app contains:
>the complete ‘Expanded Edition’ of ‘The Animator’s Survival Kit’
>over 100 animated examples from ‘The Animator’s Survival Kit Animated’ DVD box set, scrubbable frame-by-frame
>‘onion-skinning’ functionality on selected animated examples, showing previous and following frames live
>previously unreleased animations by Richard Williams, including a 9-minute film, ‘Circus Drawings’
>new pieces-to-camera from Richard Williams to put the app in context
sounds like a fair deal.

i have it, there is another book called Animation Crash Course

both of them are very good, but this one is a little bit more confusing to follow but if you want to study its good to have both and maybe Illusion of Life also
>>
It's as useful as any other art book, but you can learn everything there is about animation just by watching cartoons online, drawing on your own, and observing movement in real life.
>>
>>78556384
I'd recommend downloading cartoons so you can freeze frame
>>
I don't care about animation, but is it good for comics? I kinda like characters in comics that looks cartoony like Bone and such.
>>
>>78556416
It has absolutely nothing to do with comics, what did you expect? It doesn't tell you how to draw, it tells you purely about animation and movement.

lel someone post that lone one-star amazon review

Also, you don't have to think about shipping costs and taking up physical space that could be better used for other things.

Animation is now done in 3-D this book is dated.
The book I have on by Don Bluth were much more elaborate on the animnation process then this book. The drawings are primative and don't offer much of the way of substance you can take them at face value.
If you like stick figures you might like this book.

the Mc.Cloud manuals could be way more usefull for you

Understanding Comics and Making Comics are fine, but Reinventing comics is kinda outdated now.

Regarding comics, you should take as many tips from as many sources as you can.

I hope you never become an animator, professional or otherwise, so that your stupidity will not infect our industry.
By the way, you're a fucking idiot.
