But that shit is awful, so why not reference better anime? The only problem is we don't see enough references to stuff like Revolutionary Girl Utena and Aim for the Ace! and 08th MS Team, but I think the sort of people who'd have patrician tastes like that probably ARE working in animation, and just not being obnoxious about referencing stuff most people don't know.

That's why I said we don't see ENOUGH references to it, not that we don't see any. But SU is what I'd categorize under "not obnoxious" category of anime-inspiration (i.e. it's more than just having the season finale fight cheap out and be two people floating, yelling and charging up der lazers), since it heavily homages both DBZ and Sailor Moon (with the occasional nods to Pokemon), but also more obscure stuff like RGU or Tiger Mask. I think the giant hand-shaped Gem ship was probably a reference to FLCL's "Brittle Bullet" too.
