No, that's exactly what made it interesting, and what people miss from comic books - events actually having consequences that last for longer than the next summer crossover event. I love that Jubilee is still a vampire, being fucking vampirized SHOULD be a pernanent problem. The "oh thank god you saved me from the vampire within 24 hours or I would've turned" trope has been done to death, even in X-Men - such as when they rescued Storm from Dracula. Vampires get forgotten about in the larger Marvel Universe more often than even mutants, so having their existence actually have an impact on the X-Men was nice. It makes the world feel larger too, like if she were turned into some bullshit SCIENCE vampire like Morbius I might be less into it, but she's a full-on legit supernatural Tomb of Dracula vampire.

The problem isn't getting new actors; they got JLaw before she was anybody, and it paid off. They can afford to cast a hundred fucking nobodies if one of them can sell movies about mops sometime down the line; the problem is they can't then afford the mop chicks after their contracts expire; the other problem being that actors age and so the last movie was headlined by a guy who'll be fifty the next time he appears with a supporting cast who are in their 70s; even Ellen Page, whose appearance gets a weird cross-section of middle aged guys and general LGBT viewers into cinemas, is getting on. At 28, she's two years away from retirement in Hollywood actress terms, unless she wants to start taking mother roles. Which she already did, so she's fucked.
The easiest thing is to make the movies they can make with the cast members who draw in audiences while they have the ability to do so; then exploit the rights another way. Deadpool might take off (but it's RR-rated, so probably not); Gambit might make an unexpected hit with the fedora crowd (don't count on it). They could have a series of interconnected, stand-alone movies like the MCU (which is probably what they're aiming for) and they might make a lot of money - but if they don't, they're also developing tv shows to exploit the X-Men rights another way. Shows have about the same budget for a full season as a 2 hour movie; but they can bring a lot more money direct to FOX via advertising revenues and home media sales for the same investment. If they work; most new shows don't, and it's not the late 80s any more so nothing gets a chance to "bed in" when it's new and failing.
Only time will tell what they're really doing and whether it can work, but there are more ways to compete in this business than throwing money at movies and hoping they throw it back.
