Thread replies: 609

There is a new Kickstarter update out for Hiveswap.

The highlights:
>Hiveswap is now 2D
>Hussie clarified why he laid off his NYC staff
>Andrew made sure to mention Toby's still working on it

You're burying the lede here, there's also a newspost on the site.

Homestuck's finale is now projected to end on 4/13/16, and will have 30 minutes of animation.
>>
>>78436510
It's literally just Roxy.
>>
I wonder if I should get into Homestuck now.

Fucking hussied again
Why can't I get off this ride, even for Christmas
>>
>>78436676
That's certainly news.
It almost makes me want to actually go through all the text-logs I never bothered to read and read every wall of text that I skipped.

Oh, right, that's why I skipped them.

That background is detailed nicely but it hardly looks like Homestuck.

It's been so long since I donated that I can't even care about this. I don't even read Homestuck anymore. I stopped reading to wait for him to finish the story and then he went on hiatus forever to work on the game that I paid for. Now neither the comic nor the game are finished and I've lost interest in both.

Honestly, this is for the best. The 3D they were using looked ugly and low-quality. They should've done 2D from the start.

>30 minutes of animation
>30 FUCKING MINUTES OF MOTHERFUCKING ANIMATION

Jesus Christ. When he started the pause in August and mentioned there was 1% left of Homestuck, I was expecting a couple more boring pesterlogs followed by a meager 5 minute final battle. But 30 minutes of flash content? That's insane. That's twice as long as Cascade and Intermission 2 combined. I hope it's enough to wrap up the story.

Hopefully by 30 minutes of flash animations he means 30 minutes of quality flash animations, and not 30 minutes of FAST AND LOOSE/tumblr outsourced art.

This is it, guys. We're almost off Mr. Hussie's wild ride and about fucking time
>>
>>78437668
he'll probably spread it out over a week or two
>>
>>78437784

I understand that, but it's still a lot compared to what we've had. Let's put it into perspective: We've had half an hour of flash animations in 2.5 years, and now we're going to get another hour and a half in the span of, what, a couple weeks, at most.

It's still not as crazy as I'm hyping it to be, but it's something.

>>
>>78438845
I know you're going to bring that up but even if they lost 750K from the Odd Gentlefaggots, that's STILL 2 MILLION DOLLARS.

Look at that OP Walkcycle anon.
Does that look like the work of 2 million dollars spent well spent? There are shitty mobile games made with less looking more polished. This is just a tragedy, it's been what, 3, 4 years and they have absolutely nothing to show for it but that horrible walkframe image and a whole bunch of concept art for it. And make no mistake, that's all the rest of the "progress" shown is, concept art.

>>
>>78438935
No, it doesn't look like 2 million dollars well spent, because it isn't. This is them restarting for, what, the third time, or something like that. Expecting it to look good at the preliminary stages is optimistic at best.

Other than the ToG shitstorm, they've had to deal with a bunch of legal shit. They had to hire an entirely new team, and then hire another entirely new team because of the shift from 3D to 2D. They had to buy office space and start a game design firm from scratch. They didn't even have computers before all this either, so they had to buy that too. There's a load of behind-the-scenes stuff to deal with before you can even begin developing a game. And I'm sure sitting on their hands for the better part of a year lost them money as well.

I'm not saying it doesn't look like shit, I'm saying that there's a reason for it looking like shit.
>>
>>78439095
>I'm saying that there's a reason for it looking like shit.

Incompetence? Because that's what it seems like. This is not the kind of professionalism I would think of from someone with a masters degree, an acclaimed webcomic and multiple patents. The update, far from relieving our our fears just looks like a desperate attempt to save face in the face of mediocrity and a complete lack of real accomplishment.
>>
>>78438077
I don't care about this character
>>
>>78439095
It's not very hard to guess if you've had to restart a project THREE times it's destined to be a trainwreck and can only hope to barely rise above abysmal failure.
>>
Wow. You people really must be be the saddest bunch around.
>>
>>78439158
I'd definitely say there's a good deal of incompetence involved. Hussie put his faith in a bunch of tumblrinas fresh out of college.
>>
>>78439303
I don't know which I feel more bad for, Hussie, or the 3D animators that spent all that time working on his project only to get shafted and hear none of their art work and efforts would even matter.

Also you know that declaring them "Tumblrinas" doesn't hold any weight in the real world right? It's like calling Hilary a "meanie tumblr" or Trump a /pol/ite. It's empty and meaningless as a criticism.
>>
>>78439290
we've been through a lot man
>>
>>78439290
We just found out that a 2 million dollar game has been wasted and we only have a shitty 2D point and click jerkbait for our patience. How can we feel anything but sad? Keep in mind this isn't a swift early change or re-decision, this is 4 years into the games development. Take that in and think about how devastating that must feel for us.
>>
>>78436445
This is kind of, awful? I literally thought I was looking at some crappy fangame for a second.
>>
You know how Hussie has those walkarounds in Homestuck? Why didn't he just make a much much larger, bigger walkaround rpg game that was adventure style, that would've been so much easier and we all would've lapped it up gladly.
>>
>>78439303

"all of the concept artists worked on homestuck" was a pretty big red flag. theyre mostly amateurs.
>>
>>78439441
That's not even the problem, I mean the Concept art actually looks great.
But once you look at the Joey sprite and how it doesn't even rotate around or have any real idle animation or expression, it's heart-wrenchingly mediocre. And we haven't even seen the UI yet. How can we be geared for anything but disappointment?

Hussie said progress on the game was going well. Restarting the whole fucking project from scratch so we're not at the beginning is not "Progress" and it's not good, it's a huge step down from the bare-bones 3D animation. Makes me think their budget just ran dry and they're trying to display anything possible rather than admit this game is a failure.
>>
>2.5 million dollars
>king's quest fiasco
>restarting production on its own studio in NYC
>budget problems
>fire off all the developers and hire a new team while restarting production AGAIN.
>soaking up on toby's own game success

>all in 4 fucking long years

God damn i'm honestly very dissapointed, i really am. I loved this comic to death years ago and now this game is going to look like shit. I don't know. I really want this game to be good but it's just going though so much problems, there's no way it'll be a good game. it's just not gonna happen
>>
>>78439479

i was more thinking of the art they haven't shown yet and the walking animation. animation is hard to do, you need a lot of training.
>>
>>78439509
You have to set your expectations lower so that it's harder for them to get crushed in the end.

I still had hope up until now. Thought them withholding their card would lead to some kind of trump or savoring show that could renew faith in this project.

But showing one or two shitty walk cycles a year with a few paragraphs does NOT inspire confidence. Especially when they've run up their 2.5 million dollar budget and restarted 3 times.
>>
>>78439549
The walk sprites, bad as they are aren't even the problem.
It's that they have NOTHING TO SHOW for all of this! And they never communicate with their fans or have any transparency either.

I really don't understand what your issue with this is. If you just don't like the animation, it still shows a lot more effort and polish than anything in Undertale. No. Not even close.
The 16 bit sprites are way more polished than what's shown uptop, all we'll get is concept/background art plastered over every level while the rest of the graphics look like a terrible mobile game. This is the fate we chose.

Are you claiming that undertale's sprites look better because they use more colors?
I'm seriously confused by your argument here. Undertale was nothing but stiff 2-frame animations outside of battle and most of the sprites only used about 4 colors.

No, because they fit with the game they're in and are still pleasing to look at, even as blocky retro sprites. Even those simplistic animations work.

The top has some shitty background drawn out with an unfitting walk cycle that doesn't even attempt to make any coherency or singular aesthetic work, it's clear there's no communication and they just asked the animator to churn out a walk cycle for Joey without any communication of forethought. The point of concept art is that it's support to establish the art and graphical content beforehand, but there's no consistency between the animation and background and it just looks incredibly shitty under any standard.

The only incompetence was from going in over your head and failing to predict a dick move. Hussie started this thing when homestuck was at it's peak, and then it crashed and burned and took the comic down with it. In his defense, you don't expect someone to completely ruin a chance to make an instant huge seller to stab you in the back, but they did anyway. It IS Hussie's fault for not noticing he was getting fucked until six months in, but he was busy with the comic (daily) at the time, so it was more just a huge stab in the back.
If anything, he's 100% true to his word because he's still doing this at all. Tons and tons of poor fuckos would've dropped this project the moment their devs fucked them over, but Hussie's still making the game one way or another. The problem is just that he flew way too close to the sun here, and the overbearing weight of it all drove the source material into the ground.

>>
>>78440168
>He was complaining about frisks head and that it looked ugly
Oh well I agree that Frisk looks ugly in general. Undertale is kind of in this weird retro space where it wants to look like Earthbound and Yume Nikki but nobody wanted to make nice-looking sprites with a lot of detail, so we end up with flat, solid color sprites on shaded multicolor backgrounds and lots of other ugly shit like inconsistent outlines.

Basically I hated all of the overworld sprite art but the static art inside of shops, etc. was pretty good and sometimes the extremely minimalist in-battle art was good, but that was pretty hit or miss.
>>
I feel like premade backgrounds and sprites are the way to go, especially given Homestuck being Homestuck. Don't know what else people would want
>>
Anyone else think Homestuck would've been better if they just had a normal session? Would've ended a hell of a lot earlier, that's for sure.
>>
>>78440197
I'm not even upset over the Odd Gentleman thing, because while it was an absolutely atrocious dick move on ToG part and those guys are assholes, Hussie managed to make Homestuck on ZERO money and told an amazing story and made a marketing merchandise machine with just his creativity, simple tools at his disposal and a very very small team of artist/musicians alone. If he'd have just made the game a really long RPG Walkaround and gone cheap like Toby, he could have still pulled off a satisfying game on almost zero budget, than pocketed the 2.5M Comfy. I get that he has to innovate and explore, dude loves pushing the envelope on experimentation and all that, but still. Come on, we don't even read Homestuck for the visuals or graphics, we do it for the ideas, concepts and Writings. That's all he needed to work with, that's his strength and if he'd just dabbled that into a walkaround for a fun experience that lasts a few hours, you better believe fans would lap it up and he could still get out the ideas and stories he wanted to express. He could've made a great game, hell made 8 of them in separate chapters. With Homestuck's name attached, he would've outsold Undertale easily in the long run.

Hussie has many strengths and talents, but as a Renaissance man humility doesn't seem to be one of them. He doesn't know when to bow and accept his limitations.

It's like making millions of dollars in the stock market but losing it all because you're not satisfied with measuring up to a billionaire like Donald Trump.

>>78440304
It's more like he wrote a best selling novel but wasn't satisfied with that and wanted desperately to direct a hit movie too. The creator of War and Piece re-wrote his tale like 8 times before it was finished, and that was while having 11 kids.

>>78440301
Yes and no. Without the session going wrong, it wouldn't really be "Homestuck" as we know it, so it's too difficult and radically different to say whether it'd be better or worse. It'd be it's own thing completely.

>When he had multiple other people spend x amount of time making cheap walkarounds in flash
>Just take the cash and run! That'll be good for future rep!
If you're a shitposter or just a troll, I dunno. Hussie also genuinely likes to do his work, even if he can't stand the actual content or fans involved. How else do you think he updated daily, consistently, for three or four years?
>>
>>78440387
And I fucking hated the skeleton brothers. They were not funny or endearing at all and I wanted to punch their stupid grins.
>>
>>78440417
It's not even that, if he had those people close to him and connections to make the walkarounds for free, he could surely produce something better with all that money and make cost effective and cheap too. As I said, his strength was in the writing, not game design.

He didn't even need to make EXACTLY a walkaround, just something simple enough, a format that could get his ideas and stories across. The walkaround worked. So did like a dozen other formats and framing devices in homestuck. How in the world did such a brilliant writer and creator fail to see he could've produced a platform real cheap and filled it out with his writing midas gold touch for the rest, and fans would've loved it?

> How else do you think he updated daily, consistently, for three or four years?
With the content he makes? If he's planning on splitting it up into 4 or 8 chapters that's easily doable.
>>
>>78440405
There's nothing wrong with simple pixel art, Undertale's problem is just that it's inconsistent which is a common problem. Choosing to adhere to retro specs is a good way to avoid inconsistency and add nostalgia appeal, but it's not necessary to make good pixel art.

To make good fiction in this day and age you need to know how to draw

That or be very very very very lucky

Source: Am writer, wrote more words than Homestuck in half the time.

Hussie wasn't wrong in wanting to make a video game, but he WAS wrong in entrusting other people. Surely he must have noticed his success correlated with his ability to do so many things on his own?

That's really the secret with fiction, it's becoming less and less collaborative. If you can draw and write you can be a success.
>>
>>78440535
>Surely he must have noticed his success correlated with his ability to do so many things on his own?
You could just as easily argue that his success correlated with his ability to attract people to make art, music, and other assets for him. Problem Sleuth was decently popular but Homestuck is where it all exploded and that's when he started relying more on fans to make stuff for him.
>>
>>78440547

Being a "writer" who writes a lot of words isn't much of an accomplishment. There are shitty awful fanfics about Naruto, SSB and My Little Pony that are longer than Homestuck but it doesn't mean shit because those suck and are terrible and no one other than niche dweebs ever read them.

Also, your new is showing. Are you a native to /co/? What the hell is with the blatant Sasuke image Newfriend?
>>

The insane update schedule of Homestuck is what kept people going.

I remember two of my friends from college would always say UPDATE when a new piece came out

But yeah, his charisma helped too. I'm a bit jelly, I'm too awkward to get people to help me. People actually have to see my finished product to like what I make, they never get into the conceptual components.
>>
>>78440601
Longer fanfics I mean. Terrible, over-written and cliched hackeyed crappy fanfiction not worth a second glance by anyone other than your native TVTroper.

>>78440573
Most of Homestuck he made himself. Like atleast 95% of it sans the music and SOME second-split shown art in the Animations. The other assets were just extra.

Oh yeah, definitely. I've always believed that's the most reliable predictor of a webcomic's success.

>>78440615
Sure, but imagine Homestuck without music or the most popular flashes (all of which rely heavily on contributed art). It might still be popular but there's no way it'd go viral the way that it did.
>>
>>78440601
I ain't talking about fanfiction, friendo. Fanfiction is sad. Either it's an autistic mess, smut, or actually good(Like Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality)

But when it's actually good you're left wondering if the writer should just make actual fiction. Or at least half-original fiction, like Prequel. The guy who makes Prequel should update Prequel more, he could easily have taken Hussie's place if he worked.

Also I picked the Sasuke image because I was in a /tv/ thread where they said Rey was the last surviving Padawan and I thought to myself that's literally Naruto tier stupid. On a new computer senpai, only have like three images.

Luckily those kind of fans have abandoned Homestuck and either moved onto Undertale or Crying Universe.
>>
>>78440615
>>78440601
Anyone who writes fanfiction isn't a "writer."

Fanfiction is literally meme fiction. You don't need to establish a setting or characters, and you get points for referencing things that actually happened in canon

I am thinking of them. I just don't think they'd be nearly as enthused without shit like "[S] Make Her Pay" to rev their engines. I think of it like, Twilight was popular as a book but it's a fucking phenomenon as a series of films.
>>
>>78440701

Even if they didn't take the money and move it to King's Quest, they obviously took payment, didn't fill their end, made a shit proof of concept and then just left to make another game.

Doing any legal action would be too costly and take even more time away. In a perfect world Hussie could bring legal action to them after the comic and game is done, assuming statute of limitations didn't run out, but I doubt it'll be worth it.

I guess that's what happens when you trust a studio with the most fedora tier name ever.

Therapists are Rose and Dirk. Both are licensed professionals. Both do more harm than good. John is a janitor, and his few words of advice do much more help than all the therapy sessions combined. However, the shitty twist ending is when Karkat and Vriska try to find him to thank him at the end, they learn "John Egbert" disappeared into the steam tunnels under the city more than 20 years ago.

I don't think game developers are constantly comparing their games to whatever's popular, especially when the games are as different as King's Quest and Undertale. You never really know when a game is going to become a meme and dominate internet media. That's not something you have any control over, so I think most developers have a business-minded perspective of "if it makes a profit and doesn't break our budget, we did good"
>>
>>78441123
Game Grumps did one but I think it was mostly because Dan has a gigantic boner for old school adventure games, I doubt they would've played it if not for that.

We would've played the game just for the Writing if they'd gone minimalist from the start. Sadly they've poured so much effort into irrelevant details and now it's going to be shitty because it doesn't even seem to have Hussies touch or masterful writing behind it.

He have a team of nitwits waaay too much control so it's gonna suck.

>>78441277
Homestuck for me is like a beloved child that I adored until they turned 18 and became a drunk potsmoking burnout who crashed into a motel somewhere and got herpes with a gay transvestite. Than joined him and became a gay transvestite. You still want to give unconditional love but...it's so damn hard.

>This is going to be another mediocre game that disappoints its backers. I think Hussie has a responsibility to avenge the project's death. He should rain hellfire down on this shitty studio.
Hussie wont do that, cause his GF was the one that pushed him to let them make the game, they are part of the San Fran Click and his SJW GF wanted to gain points with them.

Shes probably cucking Hussie with them.
>>
>>78439389
You also forgot to mention that the game development and the problems that plagued it is a huge reason as to why the webcomic still isn't done. Many of us are irked that this game really put a huge hiatus on the webcomic.

Hussie just really screwed the goddamn pooch this time. He spent so much on this game and this crap is just what we have here. It'd be much better for us if the game actually looked promising, but it looks like we can't expect it to be that good.

Oh well, maybe people will somehow like it more than Fallout 4, because with Fallout 4, people were expecting it to be one of the best games of all time. With this, people are already considering it a flop. It seems like games that are already considered Dead on Arrival are more likely to gain praise.

My main worry for this game is how the fate of all the characters and settings have kinda already been set in stone.

Both earth and alternia ane going to destroyed by sburb, while the trolls either die by old age or psychic brain explosion.

Meanwhile joey and jude are going to die at the ripe old age of 26 by either meteors or that energy blast bec made.

At this point I'd be fine if in the credits we see years later jude/joey get a gift from "aunt roxy" that contains a alpha copy of sburb. (since john and the gang had a beta copy)

I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for the longest time.
"Wait and see" I said when we didn't hear any news for a year.
"Wait and see" I said again when The Odd Gentlefaggots swindled hussie.
"Just be patient." I insisted when all of the creators were twitter divas and tumblr hacks.
"Just wait, it m-might be good!" I said when we heard the news about all the animators and artists getting laid off.

But this is kinda a deal-breaker here. Remember how we were all crushed when the comic introduced Ret-Gones removing 2 years worth of story just to bring Vriska back? That's how this feels right now, only they scrapped a project 3-4 years in the making just to bring back a crappled excuse for a project and absolutely no signs of reassurance that this still has anything quality going for it.

There's nothing to root for here anymore.

>WHAT IS A VANISHING POINT

As she walks into the background, her actual model does not shrink. That is to say, things that are further away are smaller.

However, her model doesn't change based on where she is in space.

You know notice that as she walks back, she increases in height, and as she gets closer to the camera, she shrinks. If you don't see it now, think about if her model stayed the same like that while walking back to that door.

And know you won't unsee it.

You do know that's not a 3D model right? It's a flat 2D sprite, shitty and lifeless. They didn't even throw in the tech to really have it shrink or anything in perspective.

I agree. During one of the updates Hussie showed a screenshot of some big ass design document he was working on and I think that's pretty much all the studio had to go on.

You need a very specific bill of work for these kinds of things. And you need to work very closely with the studio to manage resources and time.

You also usually need to scale back your vision of the scope and size of your game, but it seems like he did a fairly shitty job of that.

With KQ they had the license but they also could design things to keep the game simple.

If anything I'm glad he just didn't straight up give up after all this bullshit, because I think a lot of people would have.
>>
>>78444333
The very idea that they could just shift shit from 3D to 2D 4 years into development is the annoying part.

It's basically saying, hey, fuck you guys, we did jack shit the past 4 years and the comic isn't even done yet because of it! But don't worry, here's a walk cycle slaped on a pretty background, rest assured we're working on it!

It's just so dumb. All the wasted potential the franchise had pisses me off. Hussie had it all, a meme franchise that caught on with a large fanbase. Dedicated creative people to work with. Books being published, merch being sold. Everything any creative person wanting to make a living off storytelling could want. And he fucking squandered it on this. This piece of shit game where he bit off more than he could chew. It's just aggravating.

Because before the 3d was shit and then the new 2d was even more shit. I mean before the background and the actual characters looked like they matched, now we can't even get that.

The background is nicely done and detailed, but the character is still the design they where going for in the 3d look, resulting in the clash of styles. The background looks nothing like homestuck Doesn't help that they couldn't even make a clean walk animation to show.

Like when/if the comic finally updates then yeah sure, I'll give it one last read before moving on. But I have no reason to believe in or care about this game which may or may not still be an 8 part episodic clusterfuck that he's already admitted will be irrelevant to the main tale.

Only on her father's side. Grandpa/Jake had children the old-fashioned way with some earth woman around the 1980's.

Rose's mom, the woman who owned that sweet house with all the wizard statues in it, was a teenager at some point while she was growing up on Earth. It's not entirely inconceivable that she was hired to babysit Joey and Jude when they were young children, especially since she has an established relationship with SkaiaNet, Jake's company which produced SBURB and all that fun horse shit.

There's "liking stuff I don't like" and there's "liking trash"

See a guy enjoying a blowjob and you don't like blowjobs? You can still understand them.

See a guy eating shit? That's a different story, maybe something's really wrong with him.

Homestuck is a soap opera, in structure (very long and meandering) and in content (character does a billion different things and interacts with a billion other characters). It's completely masturbatory (little kid controls the universe from a videogame!) and it's entirely unfocused.

Liking it probably means you have something very wrong with you. You're like Twilight moms, except the content you're crazy about is even lowlier than Twilight, it's like Days of Our Lives, but more masturbatory.

This is my professional opinion.

I understand why they're doing it, it's easier to sell a spinoff if you include known characters and the promise of lore involving those characters. But to me it carries the sense of "this story didn't really need to be told", all The Lion King 1.5 and shit. That's why I would have preferred either a direct sequel, which is immediately relevant to the characters of Homestuck, or a standalone story the uses the setting in a totally new way. No, it's not that it's easier, it's that it's LITERALLY what a spin-off is about Same universe, new character, but connected to the original story. If you don't have that, then making it a spin-off is pointless.

It's like you are complaining that the spin-off of Breaking Bad, Better call Saul happens to have connection with the original story. It does because that's what a Spin-off does.

>Homestuck is a soap opera, in structure (very long and meandering) and in content (character does a billion different things and interacts with a billion other characters).
Well it was influenced by other Soap Operas, like LOST. The comic came out immediately after the advent of highly dense soaps like Heros, and 24 (Which Huss admitted following). It's just that but with RPG/Retro videogame references.

>It's completely masturbatory (little kid controls the universe from a videogame!) and it's entirely unfocused.
That wasn't even true until God Tiers came in. Sure they could build little itty bitty houses but that was it, otherwise they were plopped into their planets, told to do quests and the "universe"" tried to kill them constantly.

If it seems long and unfocused, that's just because of it's length and the fact that Hussie cannot stick to one thing. He said Homestuck is just his spring board for experimenting with storytelling, so it's to be expected that the work isn't coherent. One minute they're talking about the economy of magic talking Crocodiles, then the "bioexistential" framework of timelines and living Universes, than we swerve back around to the comic being about teen drama and the tenants of Homosexuality. The mood whiplash really distracts from the earlier portions of the comic that knew what they were, but I'm convinced if it never branched from those first 4 acts it would only be footnote, have ended and long be forgotten by now.

It's good to experiment, I like that he did different things and tried other focuses. I just think he flew a little too close to the sun here and his wings are slowly but surely falling off in real-time..

>>78450717
That doesn't really distract from or refute the point at all.
Homestuck was made on 0$. Undertale was hashed out in pennies. Hussie had 2.5 Million dollars.
He could have easily made that money go a long way if he'd just went with a minimalist artwork fitting for Homestuck and limited the graphics and size to something easily manageable in 2 years time. Instead he poured it into a 3D Catastrophe, and now he has to spend MORE money trying to churn out a 2D catastrophe to save face which will no doubt turn out just as botched.

Radiation worked with what he had. Hussie should've undercut his and worked small.

Wheteh or not it's easier to sell doesn't matter. The only thing that matter is "does it bring something to the story? does it gives us something intterresting, something we would like to know? This is the only thing thing that define whether or not to include a known character from the original show.

>[STORY THAT DOES NOT RELY ON EXISTING CHARACTERS OR PLOT POINTS AND IS THEREFORE INTERESTING BASED ON ITS OWN MERITS RATHER THAN THROUGH EXPANDING AN ALREADY SELF-CONTAINED STORY]
But it is ridiculous to make a story less good for the sake of some sort of arbitrary requirement. Removing something that could improve the story because "people might thing I am just doing it because it's popular" is as bad as including something that hurt the story for the same reason of popularity.

Here is the thing: There need to be an explanation as for how Joey stumble on the device. Grandpa is a good reason for it.

Not to mention, it fit with the whole theme of HS having everything connected.

Good foresight isn't enough to prevent you from all the mess videogame development will brought. It was actually good foresight to listen to the advice of professional developpers who have already released game. They told him to go with 3D so he did. that they would fuck him over is not something any decent foresight could have prevented

I suspect that we each like Homestuck for different reasons. I have no desire to learn more lore about Grandpa Harley or young Mom because the last time that happened it totally ruined the mystique and the comic went to shit. I feel that unless Hussie works really hard to divorce this story from the main plotline of Homestuck, it's not going to be nearly as compelling as a truly original work and will end up being, at most, an interesting footnote in the Homestuck canon. It's like when they made the Star Wars prequels and ruined the original trilogy by carelessly canonizing random shit that makes a lot of the stuff in the original trilogy seem nonsensical.

Keep in mind, I don't particularly care that it makes logical sense for a character to be there, I only care that the story being told is well-written and has value above and beyond explaining backstory for the REAL story.

Of course, I also mentioned that I wouldn't mind a direct sequel involving the same characters, the reason for that being that it's more like a continuation of the real story rather than just some tacked-on lore.

It's not going to be 'just' a side adventure or spinoff sempai. We already know that it's going to expand on the Homestuck universe in the way they original comic couldn't. Not everyone desires to learn about that Lore but for those of that do and are interested in those things, they can. For everyone else they can ignore it and let it be a pleasant mystery.

It's like Hivebent. We didn't NEED to see all that crap about the Trolls and Alternia that was a long winding detour, but it definitely gave us a unique experience.

A lead, or lede, paragraph in literature is the opening paragraph of an article, essay, news story or book chapter. Often called the lead, it usually occurs together with the headline or title. It precedes the main body of the article, and it gives the reader the main idea of the story.

B1 and B2 characters are different characters. B2 Roxy tunred out really cool. You also seems to have missed the point that Jake is a sort of human equivalent for Tavros, having a sort of self that turned out way better and having to live up to too big expectations.

>I feel that unless Hussie works really hard to divorce this story from the main plotline of Homestuck
This is exactly what is going to happens. Joey will be stuck on her own on Alternia with complety new trolls, trying to get home Grandpa and teen-mom are supporting characters that will be here only up until Joey get stuck on the other side.

> it's not going to be nearly as compelling as a truly original work as going to be Spin-off set in the homestuck universe.

> It's like when they made the Star Wars prequels and ruined the original trilogy by carelessly canonizing random shit that makes a lot of the stuff in the original trilogy seem nonsensical.
Except unlike Stars Wars, the universe has been set much more tightly than Star wars. SW worka lot with lose canon and seeing what will (or not) tick to the wall. HS is a different beast.

>s, the reason for that being that it's more like a continuation of the real story rather than just some tacked-on lore.
I personally feel this what the game will actually end up being like: a legit sequel to homestuck, but with the focus set on new characters.

Hivebent isn't really a good comparison because it came at a time when Homestuck was still very much unfinished and can't really be seen as anything more than a change in perspective within the same story. My issue with Hiveswap is that when it comes out, Homestuck will already be over but it's still going to be latching onto all of these little things from Homestuck as a way of seeming relevant, but in reality it's not because, well, Homestuck already told its story.

>>78451873
Eh, it's pretty hit or miss in my opinion. There is some clever stuff but like I mentioned before, adhering so tightly to the "everything is connected" has resulted in some really dumb shit like Dancestors.

Well it was meant to come out during Homestuck/before the ending. I imagine if what he had planned the content would sync up a lot better with the concluding parts of the story and enrich the experience for those going into that finale.

Obviously that didn't end up happening, but it's my take on it.

>Homestuck already told its story.

Dancestors was fucling great, IMO. Especially Kankri. the break of expectation was a lot of fun. I don't know why some don't like them. it turned out with two new interesting characters and getting a good scope of what happenedin the A1 session while making really fun use of the other 10 characters. the contrast between what we knew of them in the A2 universe and how they really were in therir Beforus world was a good moment for homestuck.

>>78452037
Hussie was able to milk some good jokes out of the Dancestors, I agree, but I feel like in general they had a negative impact on the story since most of them are totally ineffectual throwaway characters and some of them didn't even really have a good joke but we still had to spend time meeting all 12 of them anyway because everything is connected and you can't just introduce some of them.

It's pretty funny how Hussie ended up retracing his steps exactly with the Dancestors as he did with the trolls. At first he said "these characters won't be important" then "12 new characters would be too much don't you think" and finally "fuck it I've already made this many so I might as well go all the way"
>>
>>78452045

>Homestuck already told its story.
not entirely, there's probably a lot more to the Game that's still a mystery. How was it made? What did the guardians know? How did they know?

I mean, what else would you make the story about if not related to the game? That's entirely what homestuck's about, and this is a homestuck game.
>>
>>78452037
They're one-note parodies of either Tumblr or fan interpretations of their Alternian equivalents. There's nothing interesting or great about them.

Homestuck is the Bleach of Webcomics.
It's so contrived and insane that even the Asspulls look like plot twists. He's even admitted that he leaves a lot of details in there so he can retroactively look for things to connect. So everything looks like "Foreshadowing" regardless of whether or not he ever had that thing planned.

>>78452161
And give Homestuck fans a bad reputation as brats that just go posting whiny reviews? Pass.
>>
>>78452168
>I'd rather go with Hussie Sr.
I have bad news for you...
>>
>>78452175
Well we know how the game was made but more to the point, believe me, I would like nothing more than a spinoff that does nothing but focus on SBURB lore. But we probably won't get a lot of that in Hiveswap and even Hussie has said that he doesn't think it's important to explain all of the details of SBURB in order to tell the story he wants to tell.

Instead of SBURB lore we're going to get Homestuck lore and Homestuck character lore and that's what makes me groan.
>>

That make their impact neutral. and I diasgree, they, at the very least managed oto convey to us how their session went on.

Beyond that, we got two interresting cxharacters out of it, meenah and Aranea, both having a great impact on the story that I woudl consider overal good, or at the ver least, , it was quite kicking ass.
>>
>>78452316
The Dancesters were the Vizards of Homestuck. They're always gonna Job.
>>
>>78452166
They didn't really have much of a negative impact. They were barely there and more or less served to characterization the original twelve trolls and the ancestors. Like, two of them have any relevance.
The real problem is that fandom seized on them, the worst characters especially, and now every fucking thing is Cronus and Kankri.

They're barely characters involved with the story, but learning about them added a lot to the lore of the trolls in general and the game mechanics, with aspect exposition and stuff. I think it was necessary to shed some light on what happened in 1/4th of this two-universe creation chain because it would've driven me nuts otherwise. And he actually made it entertaining as heck imo so it was worth it. I loved wanting to punch Cronus or Kankri in the teeth, or cringing at Latula, it was like holy shit they're awful, it was great. And then it was just pretty funny throughout, and we got Aranea, Meenah, and meteor crew conversations out of it.

It's like how things happen in the story itself - characters find themselves having to make reasons for things that happened in the past to close loops and shit, and hussie does the same when making the story. Doing things retroactively doesn't inherently make it bad, it's just different.

You're kind of missing the point. Assuming the narratives going with am ambiguous nature-nurture point, the Ancestors are kind of Bad End versions of the dancestors where they grow up in the worst possible circumstances. But they're still told to us through Mind-Fang's POV.

Mind Fang is Aranea's true self underneath, a vicious manipulative extravagant mind-rapist.
Cronus's true self is exactly like we see of his counterpart, vicious callous and cold. Not a laid back down to earth greaser guy at all.

Their essential nature is still there, but they're not what you'd expect because of those circumstances.

he's only half right
we know how the trolls' instance of the game was programmed, by sollux, based on temple carvings that aradia found

but we do not know where it originated or how
but im sure it has something to do with bullshit loops
>>

whenever a SBURB session is created it sends a frog temple to the appropriate planet and then the people on that planet find the temple and decipher the hieroglyphs to create an SBURB code

so yeah, it's a bullshit loop
