He still has a point. If every situation/comic is nothing but one sad thing after another, the sadness becomes trite. It dulls the impact.
Would have hit much harder if it learned how to pace itself, or if it was much shorter. That way we get the message, that depressing shit happens to people with no happy ending in sight. It doesn't constantly repeat itself.
There's poignancy in brevity.
