First off I want to say it's a very nice surprise that this thread is still alive.
econdly as to your question, it's honestly because I always thought they were cute together. Since early on I knew about the Lucy-Charles' first wife connection so it just clicked. I mean, yeah, Lucy being a crabby bully is her thing but she's a paper tiger. She has such a delicate skin that even the mildest insult leaves her hurt in some way. We also have to remember that the Peanuts crew are very literally small children despite sudden outbursts of mature dialogue and thoughts.
Lucy is a kid, so the naivete that accompanies that should be taken into account, she often doesn't even realize she's hurting anyone when she says things she's just saying shit and doing shit because that's what she does. In a way her constant criticism of Charlie Brown is how she expresses concern for other people. I suppose I just envisioned the two growing up with Linus-Charlie-Lucy being the group that would always hang out together, the comfort and familiarity growing over the years until they realized they made a great team that entertained each other and more importantly had a degree of trust in one another that let Charlie always have faith that this time she wouldn't pull the ball away.
