Dear Batman thread.

I've never really done inking before; here's what I have st my disposal.

What do? Tips and tricks?
>>
>>78379691
Those are fine. Staetdler pigment liners, and Pentel Stylos are better. I don't have any tips or tricks unfortunately, other than practice practice practice.

Oh and if you like the feel you get with those foam tip brush pens, look into getting a Pentel Brush Pen. They last longer, are refillable, and are... just better.

OK, another question, Batman thread.

The theme of the character is like a mix between a magical girl and Persona, she's able to briefly summon the god Ra using his staff. In the picture, should I do his lines with a thicker pen so he has more presence, or should I use thinner lines so he's got less presence on the page?

Rough sketching a pose
>>
>>78380071
Since you are just using mono-weight lines, just outline the two figures' silhoutte in thicker lines, normal lines for interiors.
You can outline the girl in white ink afterwards if you want.
That will give you the more animation feel.

If you wanna try real inking, put some veilum on top and use the brush pens for variable lines that will feel alive and more traditional comic bookish, but you'll have to practice a lot to make it look any decent, of course.
>>
>>78380569
If you want to draw simple webcomics and weeb/toony shit, work on your writing and just practice copying shit you like until you can poop out characters doing X in your sleep, like Korean slave animators.
I'd recommend listening "how to stories/music/art" and "literature" audio lectures like The Teaching Company stuff while you mindlessly groove and train your muscle memory. Within a few months you'll be ready to poop out fanart and webcomics that may make you rich and famous. Also /co/ will call you a hack.

If you wanna draw capeshit, hyper-realistic renderings of tedious regurgitation of naked musclemen corporate fanfiction for the ever shrinking neckbeard market, or wanna job drawing vidya art because someone will have to get paid to draw space marine #23566, you'll have to follow the honorable road of classical European figurative arts, an honorable discipline rich with 500 years of tradition all thrown away by Modernists of the 20th century and only held in respect by commercial hacks like us.

Draw a simple silly webcomic, throw in some black trannies, and they will praise you for being progressive and avant guarde.
Draw an expressive figure art of the human form, and the only thing non-geeks will see is vulgar nudity, body image issues, and theme song to the 60's Batman show, NA NA NA NA NA BATMAN, and smirk at you.
But they will pretend to like it if a movie gets made if it assuming yer rich now.

It means exactly what they say; learning to draw from observation. It's about learning what things ACTUALLY look like, instead of falling back on the simplified artistic shortcuts (ie "symbols") used to represent those objects.

Do some still life drawing (keep it simple to start with, some bottles and boxes maybe, nothing too complicated). Be aware of the proportions and relative sizes of the objects. Think about what is directly in front of you. You know a box has a top, but if it's placed high up, you cannot see the top of the box; therefore you shouldn't be drawing it.

Once you understand the construction and shape of the real thing, THEN you can begin to think about stylisation and simplification. You 'have to learn the rules before you can break them'.

All comicbook art/cartoons are symbols.
Only art that isnt inherently symbolic is instrumental music, the only truly abstract art form.
And even their Impressionism was a big thing in 19th century.

Is it true that it's difficult for most refined illustrators to create comics?
I don't know if an artist is supposed to focus on refining his/her craft to produce one beautiful image or learn how to make multiple images properly at a faster rate.
>>
>>78386831
Dumb frogposter
>>
>>78386884
>Is it true that it's difficult for most refined illustrators to create comics?
Rare, but not impossible.
Illustrative ability is separate from sequential storytelling that is more akin to writing then visual art.
Most comics have separate writers and artists anyway.

Look at manga & indie comix, where BW (no color) and simpler cartoony art lowers the bar for a lot more people to create their own works as both the writer/artist.

Most comics written and drawn by super high quality artists tend to be like those experimental artfilms without much narrative content. visual poems and such.

Are you getting bored?
Spice things a bit with free drawing.
Just draw whatever interests you in the meantime before heading back to technical practice.
Basically just draw what you want when you're bored of drawing what you need.
>>
>>78379691

Use a cel to protect your sketch. Otherwise prepare for a bunch of ruined sketches. Inking is final, you draw it you keep it, you know that and it will make you nervous, your lines without practice will also be squiggly. You should only ink a sketch directly if you have experience and are confident you will not ruin it. So only do it on sketches which loss you could accept at first.

Cause she got animu no jaws, for her body size and type give appropriate face.
I'm no pro, but here's a quick redline.

Yer drawing a lot muscles but not understanding where they are or how they should work, just copying the general idea of where contour bumps should be.

And most important, you do not have the gesture, the pose down, she is floating, not grounded.

Watch some figurative anatomy tutorials, study them and practice sketching a lot of quick gestures.
I'm lazy as shit, so if you're even half ass dedicated, you'll be great in no time.

Anyone else have a really vivid visual imagination but no drawing ability? Been practicing for years and haven't gotten any better. I'm kinda afraid my brain damage somehow made it impossible to draw.

My visual imagination is so vivid and precise, I know literally exactly what I want to draw, down to where all the lines will go and everything. It just doesn't come out.
>>
>>78400592
Does your brain damage have to do with fine motor skills?
>>
>>78400606
Yes, but it feels like it goes deeper than that. It feels like nothing can go from my brain to my hands. I can't draw, I can't sculpt, I can't play any instruments, etc. It's obviously not lack of ability brain-side because, for example, I hallucinate music almost all the time but I have to write it all down one note at a time in a sequencer. Been practicing piano for years, not really any better at it.

I am typing, though. That kind of gives me hope. If I can learn to type, maybe I'm not so fucked? I should probably double down.
>>
>>78400645
I'm sure you can find a way to do what you want. If you have imagination which you do you'll figure it out.

I like the colors that you have going, but because of them, it's coming off kind of flat right now. There's no change in value from foreground to background, making it look more cluttered than the subject matter would lead you to believe.

The background should gradually fade the farther back it is. You have a little bit of that in the center, but it's more of a fog than a fade. Hill and mountains in the far off background should lose detail the far they go, slowly becoming a monotone dark color, like green or blue.

Also, I love the shading that you did on the grass, it looks really nice.

Get away from tunnel vision:
>Focusing on a single picture until it's perfect
>Erasing the mouth or eyes on a picture and redoing them over and over again
>Constantly tweaking one picture that you've lost interest in awhile ago

If you mess up or don't like something, just draw it again. There's no harm in doing a second drawing, and you'll learn from it. It's better to have a dozen drawings that are all mediocre in your eyes than a single mediocre drawing. Because at least by drawing #13, you'll start seeing some slight improvements.

Also here's a Vanellope I drew.

Prototype found at the wars end; it boasted many improvements and new fuel efficiency technologies but a lack of materials diverted manufacturing to already “proven” models.

Your anatomy is good, along with your perspective, but you've got some pillow shading going on. That is, you have lots of highlights around the edges of the figure, and the shadows on the inside.

Looking at where these shadows and highlights are placed, I can't figure out where the light source is. Once you figure that out, it may be easier to mentally break down the figures into simple 3D shapes, and think about how light would interact with those shapes.

Colour Constructor
https://gumroad.com/l/ColorConstructor?recommended_by=collection#
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2l98h3puvIU

Place your figures in a real environment wityh real light sources.
Like the Sun as the main source and reflecting lights off walls and artificial lights as secondary sources.
>>
>>78419735
The highlights on the purple bitch is everywhere and doesn't show the form underneath well, try grey-scaling, "gris" under-painting first to define her shapes before the shiny details

Hard to say. I started it months ago, but abandoned it around this phase (more or less) because I didn't yet have the skills to complete it properly.

Then a week or so ago I picked it up, because I wanted to work on something and had no ideas, but there's been all kinds of interruptions since then. (You ever driven to LAX the day before Christmas Eve?)

Since I picked it up I've probably gotten two or three days of real work done on it.

Not so much. I'm kinda stumped.

I have ideas for good 'bits', but I'm trying to think of a good plot with HEART.

The Idea of each episode is for it to start clean and happy and ha-ha funny, but then half way though it changes and starts to decline into a twisted narrative taking the pals to dark places, with them possibly all die'n at the end of each video. Being tied up in basements, being thrown out of spaship airlocks, drowning with concrete boots etc. You got anyhtin'?

Here's A'pal and seedy riding skateboards.

To be honest when you pitch it like that all I can think of is Happy Tree Friends or Retarded Animal Babies.

oh-- SO: Fag.

Fag is basically the 'Do as you're told' pal. He tells you about the dangers of smoking and generaly being unsafe and unhealthy. Most other pals just tell him to 'Shut up, Fag'.

He's also there to make people say 'Fag's not a fruit'.
>>

Yeeeeah. I was hoping it would come off more as 'Don't hug me I'm scared. I don't want it to just be in your face and forcefully edgey. I basically want people to come to it thinking it's going to be flat with shit jokes and skin-deep characters, then be surprised by it's depth.

Maybe refined illustrators get lost in the technique and their stuff is super stiff or the storytelling and flow is actually supar beneath all the rendering.

Yes, use a real brush.
Practice.
Guess what, you'll have to to learn to draw again, the brush is very much a living sensitive as fuck instrument.
That's why half the time they just darken the pencils and skip inking these days.

>Also are brushpens any good?
Not really.
They are meant for portability, but the brushes are cheap and the dry out with any heavy use, consider them disposable and too expensive for the amount you can use.

There's no reason beginners should be wasting their time with analog shit in this day and age.
Comics aren't frue-frue artsy shit, yer not trying to sell originals to a gallery, it's commercial media, it's communication arts.

He looks middle gaed, not old, here. draw two line under eyes and crow feet to age him 10-20 years.

Trying stuff with looser linework (spoiler 'cause it's borderline nsfw)

Interesting linework, the only thing I'd work on right now is the foreshortening on the leg. Try to find your vanishing point established by the spine, and build the leg with that.

Yeah I should use reference as well. It's really hard to get the volumes down with so few lines

Quick one, loosely from reference
Results are questionable but it's really fun

Real talk, I've actually spent the past few days basically doing nothing but drawing. Got a tablet so I'm drawing digitally for the first time ever and man is it rough not having a screen.

It really sucks to look at something you've drawn and realize it looks worse than something you would have drawn like 5 years ago

Tablets for drawing is terrible, imo.
Save up and get a Cintiq or just scan your shit in.
Wacoms are great for Photoshop/coloring and 3D though.

It will take time though, try drawing simple shit, and stuff you already know how to draw just to get used to it.

That's... kind of weird advice.
Cheap tablets are fine for drawing if you don't push them to a point where they lag
Else use pencil and paper
why would anyone buy a Cintiq if they're starting out
