I'm pretty sure the ugly side of the fandom started flaring up towards the start of season 2. The off period between seasons 1 and 2 fostered cancerous developments with no new content to discuss. I can't remember exactly when the /b/ threads started, though. That might have been towards the end of season 1.
>>
>>78373786

It's so telling how the first thing was /co/ sexualizing as usual.

Every time I see a brony I think it's funny how they probably got into through some place like reddit or some video game community. Having no idea how it started as /co/'s usual "over sexualize cartoons" meme. No no no they insist they really like the show and not just following memetrends. Not even realizing where said memetrend even originated.
>>
>>78375054
I don't know. I recently downloaded a fuckton of archived threads from various boards that span from 2008-2013 and there's a noticeable drop in quality leading up to now. And these weren't hand-picked "epic" threads that were archived, they were randomly selected.
>>
>>78375019
thisactuallyhappened.jpg
>>
>>78375194

It can be hard to tell, but some boards are definitely experiencing a drop in quality. For example, /x/ was never great, but it used to have some pretty fucking awesome creepy threads, and tulpas/bullshit wasn't nearly as dominant as it is now.

I'm not sure what's happening. I think maybe there's been an exodus of older anons from 4chan in general, but it's just speculation.

Moot was generally great for the site. If anything, he was probably TOO relaxed with moderation, hoping the community would regulate itself.

Which, it did for the first few years. But that became increasingly unreliable as 4chan became more and more populated.

I'll never understand why people try and frame him as the man who ran 4chan into the ground, or "sold us out", or whatever. The evolution of 4chan was a mostly organic one thanks to him.

Been browsing here since 2005.

Back then, the most standard response that you'd see, across boards, was something to the effect of "lol", "win", and so on. /b/ was always pretty shitty, but the internet as a whole was a much more niche place. While today we'd see a comment like that and call them a newfag, it was pretty standard procedure.

A lot of threads were just an image, gif, or edit that would be posted, followed by a few "lol"s and then maybe some reaction images of some people trying to mimic the OP. Serious discussion did have its place, but it was pretty rare.

Also the site was much, much, MUCH slower. To put it into perspective, I'm going to use this image. From '03-'06, /a/ had less than 1 million posts, in total, most of which were of the quality displayed. Marked for deletion (old) was the fate of most threads. You're going to see how crazy shit got with my next picture.

This is a pretty well-known picture, but look at the dates and post numbers. Shit really went off the rails after the Habbo raids, and many people might know '07 as the "newfag summer".

There was also definitely a "summer" for a while. It got particularly bad around then, because there weren't many "native" posters and a relative flood of newfags. I personally think of '08-'10 as the worst period of 4chan, with summer of '08 being the absolute low point. Things are actually a lot better now, relatively. Sure there's shitposting, but at least there's not a deluge of posts asking how to spoiler and unironically posting emoticons.

>>78375952

Not really towards the end of his reign. He was pretty sterile, if not mildly detrimental.

>Chatspeak and meme memes memes

Granted, threads totally dedicated to memes weren't that uncommon either, and would probably be considered hardcore shitposting these days. But I feel there was usually a lot of original content that arose alongside it, and memes felt more like inside jokes for a specific community, as opposed to a desperate attempt at showing how hip you are with internet culture.

I also remember most posts that weren't copypasta or memes containing decent grammar and punctuation.

I dunno. A lot of it is probably rose-colored glasses at this point. I was also in my mid-teens, and probably was just more impressed and entertained by internet counter-culture.

That reminds me of how most of the serious/ongoing discussion that took place on /a/ in the early days took place on IRC. The streamlined release -> discussion format didn't really solidify until late 2004(?)
Same goes for /b/, kind of. /b/ was so slow in '03 that it was essentially used to host pictures that people were talking about on IRC.
>>
I only came here in 2012 but even in the short amount of time since then I've been here I think site quality has degraded on most every board I go to.
Or maybe it was always shit and I like retconning the past, who knows.
>>
>>78376432
I arrived at around the same time and I definitely thing that quality has gone down massively
I think it has to do with how many oldfags began to hate Moot and left around 2013 and then in 2014 we lost a huge amount of oldfags to 4+4chan and those who left aren't replaced by quality poster but by redditors and tumblrfags who come here so they look edgy and cool
>>
>>78376246
I used to browse 4chan and 7chan back in 2005~2008-ish. I stopped browsing after that and came back in 2013. It was a pretty big culture shock for me to acclimate to 4chan again after so many years. By the time the Habbo raids happened, I had already migrated to 7chan and I stayed there until I got bored with it. The internet as a whole was a lot more interesting back then... the only thing now is that there's a wiki for everything and I can find just about anything if I look hard enough. I do miss the old Web 1.0 internet -- I had only scratched the surface of what it had to offer and then it became mainstream and all the sites I frequented died and disappeared.
>>
>>78376500

I hate to sound like a grumpy old man, but I really hate what social media has done to the landscape of the internet.
>>
>>78376465
>Things declined because we lost quality posters to 7chan 2.0

I got the opposite impression from that event. If anything, the other site helped to migrate some of the especially persistent shitposters. Nothing of value was lost.

I'm also skeptical of how many made a clean migration, though. There's probably lots of crossover between the userbases still.
>>
>>78376539
Same here. I miss when most websites, even if they were someone's shitty geocities website, still had a certain amount of literacy to them... I don't know if I was just ignorant for a lot of my life and it only became apparent as I got older, but it feels like the English language has been falling apart the last 15 or so years.

I don't remember seeing many spelling or grammatical errors in official and unofficial materials unless it was done by someone who didn't natively speak English. Hell, even closed captioning is rife with spelling errors and typos nowadays.
>>
>>78376547
Its all anecdotal evidence but the quality of /v/ definitely went down in the 2 months or so after last September before I stopped visiting /v/, /pol/ quality was already declining but afterwards it went off the deep end and hasn't recovered. 4+4/co/ seems to be a bit less shitposty too but its only slightly better
4+4chan popularity has been declining rapidly recently and I would suspect that any oldfags who still enjoys chans are probably back here again though others were probably turned off from the whole experience and don't come back to imageboards
>>
>>78376602
It just would surprise me for most "oldfags" to get so shocked and frazzled by the GG nonsense that they'd completely jump ship and mourn the death of 4chan.

Considering that 4chan has always made a point to fuck with "free speech", even if just for shits and giggles. In addition, the Scientology protests met with similar resistance from the moderation team.

I guess I could understand if it was mostly people that joined the site sometime after 2009? Maybe 2008? Still seemed like a naive way to react.

I do think that it's reasonable to assume that more and more older posters are becoming less active, but that likely has more to do with older posters becoming busier with other interests and life priorities.
>>
>>78373786
Wasn't this a repose to some cartoon site shitting all over MLP before it even came out. Thus causing /co/ to watch it out of spite?
>>
>>78376602

Internet culture declined because of aging. The young adults who pioneered in the late 90s/early 00s hit middle age and decided they wanted to be known for "serious" issues and not so much random meme shit. It's the reason why once great places like ANN, Cracked, and SomethingAwful turned into festering tumblrina shitholes.
