That's not what makes them funny though. Cartoons are great for comedies because it's easier to convey visual humour when it's controlled in animation, you can create weird fantasy settings and creatures easier, and you can get away with gory deaths.
Not that an adult drama cartoon will never work, but it's just that there's no audience for it. Kids won't watch it if it's too mature, and adults will think it's stupid. The only people who will watch it are cartoon nerds and no one cares about them.
When you have a show that deals mainly in character relations, there's really no need to make it animated anyway. Drama just has more impact when you've got real people in front of the camera. In animation, there's no substitute for great actors and actresses acting out the scenes with proper subtely in their facial expressions and body language.
Well, you can get the most talented animators and take your time to create great character models and animate them well, but that's pretty damn expensive for a tv show that no one wants to watch.
