Should cartoon shows even have fanbases? Why can't these edgy teens just watch a thing on television and then leave it there? They got to be making drawings and cosplays and scattering autism all over the place. Just watch the stupid show and don't discuss it further.

Should anything have a fanbase?

No, because fandom is an inherently shitty thing.

Doesn't stop anyone though, so lets shitpost waifus and headcanon all day.
>>
>>78300382
why can't YOU just ignore a fanbase?

you're on /co/, what's the point of being on /co/ if you don't want to discuss a show? You're just as bad as them
>>
Well that goes for any source of entertainment. I think it can be ok to want further disucssion, but you can't let it become part of your identity where that's all you live for.
>>
As long as people are willing to wrap their identities in things, there'll always be fandoms.

Not gonna happen unless lonely nerds find an easier way to socialize than quoting a show you both watch.
>>
>>78300382
Sounds like you're even more autistic than the people you're complaining about.
>>
>>78300382
Well that depends on what you mean by "fanbases".

People have too much time on their hands. Our sedentary lifestyles have made us lazier, fatter and stupider.

You just dont understand, dad

You're right, complaining about things that don't affect you is a much better use of your time

And what's all this bullshit I hear about enjoying things? I swear, people that enjoy things should be drawn and quartered.
>>
if fandoms never exist people would have never bothered to recite ancient poems and keep them and religions would have never existed and nobody would draw porn
>>
>>78300382
You can almost say the same about religion
>>
>>78301205

the only things fandoms enjoy is complaing about how much they hate the newer installments of whatever they're a fan of
>>
Fanbases are fine when there is no global connectivity. Back when it was only the most devoted fans creating material and making it for themselves out of passion using real skills, instead of anyone being able to throw together some memes or artworks quickly to get famous and any idiot being able to comment on it
>>
>>78300382
>and don't discuss it further
Go back to bed, grandpa. That's how media and other experiences work.

I was about to agree with some of the stuff you said, even if you had a terribly articulated perspective.
You're mixing up fandom with the universal human drive to find meaning in experiences real and fictional.
Fandom is stupid because there is an implied exclusivity: "(media franchise) is the only frame of reference I will ever accept for trying to figure out or express my experience of life." That is a big symptom of existing or impending mental illness.

So OP, you seem to be just as miserable and pathetic as the people you're whining about. You could have maintained a shred more dignity if you kept that opinion privately instead of looking for a soapbox to express something so poorly thought out.

What do you mean "should"? Do you think this is something you have any control over? That you can just announce "okay we're not doing fandoms anymore, everybody in the community please disperse and find other hobbies"?

I'm not really getting the thrust of this discussion. Is it just a thinly veiled pretext to complain about things you don't like?
>>
>>78300382

I don't understand. You're complaining about people having fun? Is the thought that someone out there is enjoying themselves enough to send you into a frothing rage?
>>
The problem isn't fanbases, it's the "fandom" version of them where everyone spouts old memes, makes everything political, and everything is over-hyped and over-analyzed. Everyone is trying to get attention because everyone is capable of commenting and producing.
Not to mention the definition of what a fan is changed. Simply having seen some entry level shit now puts you on the same level as someone who is completely versed in every aspect of the thing so people only focus on the entry level shit

People are social animals, OP. Even if it usually eventually to really unappealing fanbases, the impulse to discuss and share about a thing a group of people feel affection for is not going to stop, stop waving that b8 around. Why else would people be compelled to post on imageboards/forums/chatrooms?
>>
>>78301647
Should is actually the right word here. It's a discussion of what is ideal not feasibility.
>>
But fandoms spawn the next generation of creators. Also, the ability to imagine, to share that imagination with others, to exist together in a shared fantasy and generate new ideas and fantastic notions is the divine spark that gives humans so much more potential than all other animal species that have ever lived on earth. Art and appreciation of art is one of the finest aspects of being human, watching an amazing cartoon that sparks your imagination then sharing that joy with others is the apex of the human experience.
