The movie was great. Demons and Devils come in when everyone is being terrible during Christmas. I liked it more than Gremlins.

Also, why did Krampus kill the deliveryman, the snowplow driver, and the boyfriend and his family? They had nothing to do with the family or showed any signs of being assholes.

Krampus at least gives you a second chance. Sam has no mercy.
>>
>>78148245
miles? they were within walking distance
>>
>>78149336

Sam is only one entity while Krampus has his whole posse of killer toys and gingerbread men, his elves, and giant reindeer as well as being able to fucking wreck your home in less than a night.

Also, what were the references to TrT in the movie? I heard they somehow take place in the same universe.
>>
>>78149616

What about the old man? Though I actually have a theory that stuff like the zombie kids was caused by him because Sam noticed the guy drowning the trick r treaters in a flashback.
>>
Frankly the Easter bunny seems like the logical next step to complete the trilogy.
>>
>>78152346

Doughterty responded to a tweet recently saying something similar, and said "Easter is cool too" with an emoticon. Something along those lines. Seemed like a tease but I only briefly read it while scrolling through my feed so I may have missed part of a conversation.
>>
>>78152567
Well it's both well known and it's vague enough to do whatever you want. I mean honestly try and explain the Easter bunny outside what he does.
>>
>>78152567

But at least with T'r'T and Krampus there are "scary" elements to those holidays.
>>
>>78147671
>>78148245
Did you notice how in the flashback after murdering Omis parents and dragging their corpses away he looks at her an winks?
Krampus is kind of an asshole.
>>
>>78149616
And Sam doesn't even give a shit if you are in the spirit or not.
>>
>>78152709
Yes he does, his whole deal is if you break the rules of Halloween he kills you.
>>
>>78152567
>>78152663
Valentines day predates the modern christian saint version. Although, its still more of a spring advent, and fertility, not a ton of scary.
Also alot of Valentines day horror movies already.
>>
>>78152708

But Omi's parents were assholes, with Krampus only not killing her to show she can be a warning not to be as shit on Christmas.
>>
>>78152939
Yeah but its pretty clear from that instance and the ending he very much enjoys what he does.
The whole "be nice on Christmas" thing is probably an after thought to him.
>>
>>78152939
So if the kid just accepted the Krampus ornament, would he just continue his life.like the grandma?
>>
>>78152986
>>78153015

No, he just decided to spare the kid and his family since the kid showed he actually cared about his family as well as possibly how they grew to bond over the course of the movie, but he just had to "throw" him into the underworld and leave the ornament to hammer the moral into him.

He was also using the snowglobes to check in on people who are assholes around Christmas.
>>
>>78152723

He cares if you follow the rules, he doesn't give a shit if you're in the spirit. Brain Cox basically saved himself by accident, he was still a bitter cunt at the end of that fight.
>>
>>78153487

There's still the theory >>78152229 said about him bringing the kids back from the dead so they can have their revenge, and on those asshole kids who scared the witch girl.
>>
>>78153535

I'm not sure if Sam intended to kill the asshole kids or not when he brought the ghosts back. Maybe that was just a happy coincidence.

But yeah I guess the very last scene points to Sam still getting Brian Cox, so the spirit thing might still stand.

Halloween is a time for these things to come out and play.
sam is the spirit of halloween then. trick or treating.. his tricks are deadly. he does this thing regardless of if you adhere to the spirit or not, because that IS the spirit of Halloween.
>>
>>78154636

Well the only one he killed was the girl who put out a pumpkin's candle and almost killed the old man to teach him a lesson. Probably spared him because he knew the zombie kids were coming and didn't want to take away their chance at revenge.

Ah, but this way countless children can be scarred for life.

Kid of off topic but one scene didn't make sense. Principal is berrying the fat kid, the kid keeps asking to help carve the 'pumpkin'. They even show the kid is still alive while he was berrying him.

Principal goes down to the basement and the fat kid head is on the carving table. At what point did he chop off the head?
>>
>>78155028
There was already an unconscious kid in the pit when he dumped fat kid's body. That's the kid that woke up and he killed with the shovel.

>>78153900
Kinda, it occurred to me just before the movie started, so I didn't have time to be disappointed or not.

Aw man. I thought it was "cute" when they were going to carve the fat kid's head together.

Eh, it's a different kettle of fish. Rare Exports is more of an actual horror film, with the black humor coming out of the strangeness of the premise, while Krampus is a present from the opening moments as a horror comedy.

In terms of Christmas Themed Horror Comedy, its definitely 2nd place to Gremlins, but I love Gremlins, so I'm biased.

Omi's entire village got a bad case of kramps for being pissy about WWII blitzkrieging their holiday spirit. Krampus likes to shop in bulk.

The first minutes of the movie are of rabid shoppers going apeshit on one another. Their whole town probably got a visit from Krampus.

You'd really think all this shit happening in one town, on one night, would attract some extreme news attention

Really, if you think hard about it, every film that involves wide-sale situations like these, or any found footage situations involving the supernatural, would have world-wide repercussions.

You have PROOF of the supernatural.

There's the general public's disbelief to take into account. Kingston Falls had a town-wide outbreak of Gremlin violence, but the out-of-town reporter shown at the end seems to refer to the various eyewitness accounts of "little green men" sarcastically.

>>78157973
They weren't, but I can see why you think that because the film never went into the lore.

The exact explanation of what happens to people who Krampus actually takes away/can't be helped/, in the canon of Dougherty's Krampus anyway, is only revealed in the graphic novel: They are put into sacks and taken to a giant junk yard like place that is literally filled with sacks of frozen people. The frozen people are taken to a factory where they thrown into a fiery pit (like the one shown in the movie, where they throw Jordan and Max in)--where they are reborn/turned into the killer toys. So Max and his family were given a second chance.
>>
>>78157823
>>78157991

But as said earlier, those holidays have no horror/scary elements in their mythos like Halloween and Krampus.

It's like he's the biggest dick in the world but he's offering you every opportunity to find a way out of this shit situation you've put yourself in.
>>
>>78170619
>two halfs of the same person

Uh... no. Saint Nicholas and Krampus are two distinct individuals.

Almost all we have of the modern "Santa Claus" is actually just Krampus himself. The elves, the red coat, the big sack he carries around. All Krampus. Hell, even leaving the milk and cookies comes from the belief that when Krampus came to beat your ass raw with a ruten you could buy your way into a second chance with some sweets and a bottle of schnapps.

The modern image of Santa came about in the 1920's when the Coca-Cola company took all those bits and pieces of Krampus lore, rolled them in sugar, and draped them onto a barely-recognizable caricature of Nicholas.

So for st. Nicolas you just need to be a good person?
>>

>It's like he's the biggest dick in the world but he's offering you every opportunity to find a way out of this shit situation you've put yourself in.

Yeah, that's his deal. He's a complete asshole, but he really does want you to be a better person. Tough love. Tough, mentally-scar-you-for-all-eternity love.
>>
>>78170761
The original Santa is pretty much Odin. A lot of Christmas traditions are norse pagan traditions.
>>
>>78170705
I don't think he expected it, necessarily. Max's Omi got the bell and didn't offer herself as sacrifice, but she still lived. I would wager other children who have been through the same thing may have not given themselves up for sacrifice.

I wonder if Krampus laughing was out of it being unexpected, as well as him having a go at scaring the shit out of Max before throwing Jordan & then Max into the pit.

So you HAVE to have holiday spirit to not summon krampus?
>>
>>78170815

Saint Nicholas and Krampus are Germanic in origin, not Norse.

>>78170807

If you were a good, honest person then Nick would stop by your house and fill your shoes with candy and small toys. If you were a little shit, Krampus would beat your ass with a bundle of birch branches. If you were so bad that a savage beating wouldn't straighten you out, he'd stuff you in a sack and take you back to his castle to slave and toil either until you were a good person or died, whichever came first.

Also some versions of the tale I've read say that if he took you and you never learned your lesson, then he'd just fucking eat you.

The movie's canon is kind of confusing on this.

It seems like not having Christmas spirit isn't enough to summon Krampus. There has to be some trigger, like the grandmother giving up hope and throwing her St Nicholas doll in the fireplace or Max losing his Christmas spirit and tearing up his letter to Santa. In both instances the film implies that it was their feelings and actions which caused Krampus to be summoned, not just people not having holiday spirit.

It seems like the family were assholes on Christmases past, because Max says something like "every year it just gets worse and worse," and his letter makes it clear that things had been going wrong for a while. But despite that, no Krampus in the previous year or the year before that... was it because Max still had spirit and believed?

Later on in the film the grandmother tells the cousins, who are asking if they were super super super good would Krampus go away, that it's not your actions but your feelings and what you give up that determines your holiday spirit.

>honest person then Nick would stop by your house and fill your shoes with candy and small toys.
Huh. When I was little my parents told me to put my shoes out for Santa to put presents under. I assumed it was because we didn't have a chimney. It probably was, but interesting that it was more accurate than the chimney.
>>
>>78171393

Yeah, I'm actually not sure where the chimney thing started. Nick and Krampus would just come to your house and knock on the door.
>>
>>78171459
No one knows exactly when it started, but it's been a few centuries at least. There's a 17th century Dutch painting I remember we used to have a print of, where two kids are looking up a chimney, the older one telling the younger that the chimney is how Nicholas got in the house to give them gifts.

I think that was because Omi didn't lose her faith out of anger or frustration; it was more of a broken spirit sort of thing. Her parents drover her to it. Max outright rejected the holiday spirit, and I think that's why Krampus didn't spare him. This isn't the best comparison, but I would liken it to being agnostic versus being atheistic: there's a big difference between saying there probably isn't a god or higher power and saying there absolutely isn't one.
>>
>>78173467
but krampus did spare Max, twice. once when he gave him the ornament, just as he did Omi, then again by resetting everything and giving him the ornament again.
>>
>>78173620
Did I misinterpret the ending, then? I thought they were all trapped in eternal Christmas hell.
>>
>>78173894

Krampus canon (established in the prequel comic) indicates that if Krampus deems you irredeemable, you (dead or live) are stuffed in a sack and dragged to a frozen wasteland; then you're thrown into the fiery pit you see in the film, afterwards you wake up as a transformed evil toy, forever set to do Krampus' bidding and try to get people to do what you couldn't: realize and make up for their errors.

If you are redeemed, you get the Krampus ornament, as a reminder to never again lose your Christmas spirit. Max and Jordan were thrown in the pit, but they wake up in their own bodies. Max gets the ornament--twice, once because Krampus spared him just like he did Omi, and then again after Max's offer of sacrifice makes Krampus decide to do what Max suggested: fix everything.

Aside from the comic establishing some more rules that the film left out, I don't think they were trapped in an eternal Christmas hell. If they were, the film would have made it more clear, Dougherty doesn't shy away from punishments in his film so it wouldn't be left ambiguous. I think if they were trapped in eternal Christmas because of Krampus, Doughtery wouldn't have shied away from showing us that--having the family go through the one Christmas, go to bed, wake up... Christmas again. Then pan out to laughing Krampus and the globe. Instead we see the family wake up, enjoying Christmas like they used to (Max's wish to Krampus) and Max thinks it was just a bad dream. Then he unwraps the ornament and everyone else realizes it wasn't a dream.

When did Krampus become normalfag territory? This sucks.

Binding of Isaac, maybe? I don't think there was one big surge. It just kind of steadily grew.

I found a bunch of "lesser" holiday horror lists on IMDB. There's a few instances of people seemingly trying to kickstart villain-centric franchises.

The best thing about that awful Leprechaun movie is that there was a change in production and you can tell EXACTLY where it happened.

The first half actually sets up a bit of the lore about the statues from the previous movies...and then mid-way point it's all ignored for little demon.

It's great, and it does have a very Gremlins feel to it.

I saw this movie Friday night, the theater was half full and a third of the people where kids.

This is the part where most of them lost their damn mind. There was a single mother near me who kept telling her kid "This is what happens when your bad." Mother of the fucking year.

The Rudolph guy mentioned in that pic was lame as hell, though the Christmas rhyme lay-out they used to tell the story was amusing. He was literally just a guy with a Santa costume who strapped some antlers to his forearm to stab people. If I recall correctly, Cassie and Vlad killed him thinking he was a supernatural killer and expected him to get back up but then comedically shrugged it when he turned out to just be a regular guy.

Or having the monsters suddenly rush in and start tormenting everyone.

Priapus and Dionysus were gods of fertility. Eros/Cupid, a son of the goddes of love, was the god of love

>Valentines

There's the Miner from My Bloody Valentine and its remake.

Sure, he doesn't exactly scream Valentine's Day, but he still looks cool nonetheless.
