I'm satisfied with the outcome. It's a lot lower than the initial interest polls I did, but that's expected - spending money is a lot harder than just /saying/ you'll spend money. Enough orders were still put in that I get pretty good rates on the production, which was basically the goal of crowdfunding it like this.

I'm not sure if it counts as "projecting" to assume other people have had similar experiences to me! I mean, yeah, there are definitely some good clients out there who will appreciate whatever you draw for them simply because you drew it, but that sort of person is pretty rare until you start to become popular. And once you actually have that level of social reach, it's just more appealing to choose your own things to draw.
There are probably some artists who legitimately love commission work. But for the most part, I think there's a reason almost every artist has some big comic project they're perpetually planning. They're aspiring to reach the point where they no longer have to design restaurant menus and draw fursonas, and they can just make a living off the things they want to draw.

For real, though, I'm not playing you guys or anything. Even when I try something weird to see what the reaction will be, I'm pretty overt about exactly what I'm doing and why. If I find something that works, I want people to be able to imitate it. If I find something that doesn't work, I want people to be able to avoid it.
Like, even the fact that I could crowdfund regular webcomic merchandise like this is pretty significant. I think I mentioned it in another thread, but by buying the tees in bulk I'm making roughly 4x as much off each sale as a creator who sells them through a service like Redbubble. That means a webcomic author could conceivably use this approach to become self-sufficient with 1/4 the fanbase usually required. At least, assuming I can repeat it later.
For now, though, I'm just gonna sleep so I can spend tomorrow drawing cats and putting together some kind of merchandise progress bar.

I think the hype over prequel junk will definitely die down if he sells them for long. A lot of people seem to want stuff just because it says prequel on it rather than because they desire them and dont want to miss out, and the products they do want are too limited in stock. I'm not going to do the same stuff next time. I think it's pretty safe to assume that people who didn't get it this time probably won't want it in a year, and new readers will be more likely to buy if they know everything is limited.
