Why is this style so popular? I've seen a bunch of artists for some years now who draw like this and I can never find who the original inspiration for it is.

Hmm, two that come to mind and I can name are Vivienne Medrano and FailTaco and Zsycho on DA. There definitely are way way more who draw in this lanky giant eyed style. It really is a style you see a lot on DA and Tumblr. A few people use it to animate which I can see why it's preferred.
