The latter had a good emotional hook. It was funny watching little Splinter mimicing katas in the old comic/movie and I felt was sad for the poor critter seeing his master die. The "Yoshi mutates or reincarnates into Splinter" origins can be good, too (like in the Nick show where his daughter is raised by his worst enemy). Splinter just finding some book lying around makes me feel nothing but contempt for how little the writers cared about the source material.

I really love the way Bebop and Rockstready look, and the turtles have had some details scaled back so there is less uncanny valley, as well as not looking like steroid addicts. Aesthetically I'm pretty happy with the new look, though the turtles beaks still look stupid with the exaggerated nostrils.
Hopefully this movies development is less convoluted than the previous entry, now that the origin story is told and the tone is set they don't have to re shoot half the thing.

The archetype's that the turtles use are classics and have a lot of wiggle room for creative interpretations, but for me personally I just live the style of the turtles, they're so goofy and cute yet kind of cool, they're just really fun to look at.
