To be honest, I think the problem is that what the audience wanted out of Star Wars isn't what Lucas thought the series was about. It was supposed to be Buck Rodgers meets The Dambusters, not fucking LotR meets Dune. And I'm not talking about quality, just scale, tone, and depth. A New Hope is campy as fuck, and that's what makes it great. By the time Revenge of the Sith rolls around you just want to commit suicide from the immature "seriousness" and mindless action that the fans demanded.
Sure, Star Wars could have and should have grown into its big boy hard sci-fi pants, but that'd have meant shedding a lot of what the fanboys crave. Hard sci-fi is like eating your vegetables; and Star Wars is like eating sugar donuts for 40 years. The series doesn't need to become darker or more serious, just grounded and with real stakes. There was two decades of EU before the Prequels and that's the mess the fans encouraged and loved. It's not just that the Prequels are bad on a technical level, it's that the fans wanted the prequels to happen. They wanted to see the Clone Wars and Anakin's fall, even if that story isn't even worth making three movies about. Clone Wars the cartoon series was good, but that's because it benefited from being episodic and having a large diverse cast. A movie needs to be a singular story, not about an entire fucking time period in the lore. The result was Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith becoming a bunch of clones fighting a bunch of drones, and none of it fucking matters since they're all clones and robots. But it's "cool" and what the fanboys want.

If you cut out gang activity from the equation than american victims of gun related crimes fall well below the global average.
