I'd argue that Thanos Quest and his revival in Silver Surfer are better arcs for Thanos than Infinity Gauntlet.

Stop right there and don't do yourself a disservice.
Thanos Quest serves as the primer for the futile struggle in I.G., it is required reading. You really see how despite his cunning and capability he defeats himself more in Thanos Quest than in I.G. where it appears to be more a series of misfortunes.
