Last volume ended with her getting the superhomies to acknowledge that she is probably their most valuable member since she provides nearly 100% of their intel on bad guys and has taken down many high level villains on her own.
She is now a actual member of the team instead of just a associate member.
Genuinely the most entertaining, innovative and exciting cape comic out, in my opinion.
I really loved the intel angle Warren spun in the last volume. Mayfly's arc has been emotionally brutal.
Whenever Warren draws leather jackets or intricate super-weapons I'm always blown away. I think his colouring isn't great though, but thank god Empowered is all sweet, sweet pencils, or occasional chunky black marker.
I dunno. I love this series. I got why others don't. But just like when I see people say they hate say,, Frank Quitely for example, I understand where they're coming from, but I know they're wrong (for lack of a more sophisticated way of saying: my opinions > your opinions)

Personally I think Warren could afford to make her chubbier without sacrificing the story. I don't like how she's clearly skinny and everyone makes fat jokes about her, it's very immersion breaking. Same with ninjette being an alcoholic who only drinks beer being rail thin, and thug boy having ptsd. If you're going to write about people having real problems you actually have to GIVE them those problems, not just say they have them and move on. The only exception is sister spooky, her post Mindf*** characterization was amazing and very realistic.

Pretty sure Adam has stated he wanted to make Emp look closer to what she sees herself as on tumblr. The reasoning behind it is that he feels weird drawing her the same body type as his other female characters but Emp is the one that constantly has fat image issues.

I was willing to believe that was all Spooky's hex affecting people's perception of Emp, which in turn was affecting Emp's own perception of her self.
Besides, Emp exists in a fairly shallow as fuck universe not unlike our own. It's not hard to believe a hot, jiggly chick like Emp would get called a fatass... especially if it catches on.
I don't think making Emp more realistically chunky adds anything to this... unless, in fact, it becomes a future story point after all.

I'm honestly impressed that Warren put that level of effort into her character design. Although she's had some small changes I always just assumed he WANTED to draw her like every other body type in the comic, because that's his preferred body type. Her costume is made of a semi-sentient alien membrane that's affords her a variety of superpowers... But is highly fragile and only functional when it's intact, hence the numerous kidnappings. Still, she powers through to the best of her ability, even though her colleagues in the superhero community shit on her at every chance.
There's more to it than that, but it's more multiple plot threads woven throughout her misadventures than a continuous plot.

start at 1 and keep going, the humor and tone grows as the seies progresses, and there are a lot of callbacks to earlier events and concepts so you will lose a bit of context if you skip stuff, the earlier stuff is more story of the day format as opposed to the arc driven storys of later volumes.

I've been following Empowered since Volume 1, buying them (and the one-shots) all. Only thing from the books I have a problem with is The Caged Demonwolf and the way he talks. It can be very VERY exhausting getting through his dialogue, especially when it's going on for several pages.
Also, anyone wanna bet how long it'll be until Empowered moves to Kickstarter or IndieGoGo?

The humor can be hit or miss but where it really shines is character development.
All of the main characters have their own shit going on and it's cool to see the protagonist develop into a more functional superhero throughout the series.

Empowered's supes are like jaded celebrities, most of them never face serious threats and are always surprised when they do. That's why Emp is so effective, everything is dangerous to her due to her low power level so she treats danger realistically. It's a nice way of making the underdog actually competent for a change.
