I can understand why Marvel keeps creating Superman analogs. Everyone does that. Mark Waid, Alan Moore, whatever.
What I don't get is why they keep retroactively inserting them into the past of the universe. Why not do a transparent "What if Superman arrived at Earth in modern times?" character instead?

He was crated on the 2000's and his origin was that he's really been around since the Silver Age of comics, but when his mask was damaged and people found out he was black they didn't want him saving people's lives anymore so JFK asked him to stop being a superhero

Kinda sorta. He was a black Superman expie in the 60s. The government made him wear a mask so people wouldn't know he was black, fearing that there would be riots and mass panic knowing that there's a black man with god-like powers. After his mask is torn off in a fight, the president tells him he needs to fake his death and retire because the world wasn't ready for a black superman yet.
After his wife dies decades later, he comes out of retirement. He was pretty good in Ewing's Mighty Avengers/Captain America and the Mighty Avengers and is starring in Ewing's Ultimates which just started.

I like Moore's Supreme where every retcon, alternate universe, what if, etc. version of Supreme all exist together. When their time comes and they get wiped away fro a new version they all go to live together with Silver Age Supreme reigning as king
