Yes, but Wicked also had humor and intrigue, and still admitted that the traditional villian did some bad shit too rather than "The Patriarchy is the true evil".
Furthermore it took a lack luster villian and gave it character. Maleficent took the teeth from Disney's best badass

Absolutely. Shrek, in a weird way, became the thing it hated most. It started out as a parody of the crass sentimentality and commercialism of its competitors, and then made a disgusting number of cash ins after.

Shrek -> Animation in the 00s, with shit like Chicken litte, Valiant and Shark Tale
World of Warcraft -> every MMORPG and expansion since then
