Some martial arts are actually useful against armed opponents, though. Krav Maga is basically centered around disarming enemies, and some East Asian martial arts feature disarming techniques too.
Granted, if it's a room full of armed people, or unarmed people for that matter, any one person is going to be screwed, no matter how well-trained they are.
The idea that martial arts can help someone beat an armed opponent, or an opponent who's physically stronger/taller/heavier, is truth in television. The idea that martial arts can help someone defeat multiple opponents at once is pure fantasy.
