Anon if that were really possible you could take, say, the color-changing ability of the chameleon or cephalopod (or both) and just graft it to the human genome.
It's not possible. Those abilities rely on other processes, so you have to graft those as well. Eventually you're replacing whole chunks of DNA entirely until you have a horrible cephalopod/chameleon hybrid struggling to breath in and out of the water. Suddenly it shoots lasers out of its eyes and another experiment swoops down from above and snaps its neck.
Plus, you can only breed them with each other, which makes the potential for magnificently fucked up recessive gene combos absolutely enormous.
It's just not worthy of a real scientist's time.

I did that in the 90's with Spider-Man the animated series and X-men the animated series. But those shows were a hell of a lot more accurate than the shit that passes for television these days.
