They explain it later on. Basically, the network wanted Robin to help boost ratings and get kids more connected because I guess kids get bored when there isn't a kid to relate to in the program? I dunno, I never had a problem with a lone protagonist without a kid sidekick even as a kid. I was all alone and had no friends, so I knew if I was a superhero, I wouldn't have a sidekick either.

I kind of liked the more angular look for some things, and some characters got better character designs (Scarecrow and Ivy, for example). Some characters' designs became shit, though (Joker's and the Mad Hatter's).
The stories weren't as good (became more villain-of-the-week-ish and it had fewer of those episodes where Batman would take on some normal dude), but it didn't become awful or anything, it was still a tight show.
