For a Prequel drinking game, we gotta use Cider right? Cause you know, Cider... Or Wine cause Grape is a moderator.

>there are people in this very thread who read a fan comic set in the Elder Scrolls universe who don't know anything about the Elder Scrolls series
>>
I feel bad because there were a bunch of people asking me questions past thread and I never got a chance I reply.

Quick version:
-Pratchett is one of those authors I've never read, but which has been hyped up to me so much that I'm worried he'll never meet the expectation that has been set.
-I like some worldbuilding, but 99% of it just feels like an existing story with the names changed. I don't want to berate someone if they enjoy that, but a lot of times it just feels like they want to write pure homage fanfiction without the stigma of doing so.
-I think a good critic is one who can represent a wider audience's views. Like, for someone like me who has access to thousands of people's opinions on my work, it's okay to just know a lot of people who express their personal thoughts. For someone just starting out on something who only has one or two people read their work, they need someone who can predict what a wider audience will say. The guy who told that anon "I don't like vampire stories" was not a good critic, he was just an ordinary reader, but someone who says "people are tired of vampire stories" may be a good critic (if they're right).

>>77700015
You should add high-fives, belly rubs, and nose boops. I mean come on, you have an opportunity here, don't blow it on only what's predictable.
>>
>>77704478
Yes.
>>
>>77704478
I don't think they need to. The comic rewards TES knowledge a lot but does not require it to get it's theme. Anything they don't understand can be chalked up to 'that's just how prequel's world is'
>>
>>77704650
I pity people that have no preexisting knowledge of the setting. There's so much neat shit I could imagine not making much sense if you're not already familiar with it.

The bigger concern is that the polyester fabric is very thin. It's somewhat stretchy, drapes very nicely, and would be perfect if you wanted to spread it across a bed and lay nude on it for a photo shoot, but it wouldn't do very much to keep you warm as a blanket.

>>77704832

Audiobooks are great for doing chores and transit. Once you find one you like and you start to get into it you'll start looking forward to doing the dishes/taking the subway/etc.
You just have to get over that initial barrier of listening but tuning out. It's the equivalent of moving your eyes over a page but not reading. All audiobook noobs suffer from it but a couple of chapters into a book and you'll understand everything without even paying attention. We can give you some book recommendations if you want.
>>

>>
>>77704496
>-Pratchett
That was me. I'll gladly tell you which books to read, and believe me - he is as good as people say. He has some, well, not-so-good books, but overall- there's tens of good ones. You can start with Equal Rites, Guards! Guards!, Mort and Smallers Gods. Should be quite enough to show you his style of writing, and each one of these is tied to later books or is the starts of a series (Witches of Lancre, Guards of Ankh-Morpork and Death). If you only want one, but that shows later Discworld, where Pratchett wrote more about different races, you can try Monstreous Regiment - it has a cameo with some Ankh-Morpork characters, but nothing major, and it's a great closed story about war and always remembering to put your socks the right way in your pants.
>>
>>77706934

Fuck, meant Small Gods.

Oh come on, it's not that bad. The "digital gimmicks" are not particularly badly-used and the artist clearly has some decent grasp of how lighting works, even if the anatomy really needs to catch up. It's usually the other way around, from what I've see people tend to learn light at a slower rate than anatomy.

>>
>>77714464
The artist shouldn't skip ahead to advanced things like rendering until they have a decent grasp of the basics anyways.
>>
>>77715642
What an artist "should" do depends on the specific situation. If you want to create character art to appeal to an audience, then yeah you're right, start with the basics. But if the artist only creates stuff for their own entertainment then they "should" just focus on whatever they enjoy doing.
And sometimes just focusing on the things you like is the best way to maintain motivation and discipline as you learn everything else along the way.
>>
>>77716119

That falls apart when applied to methodical crafts such as art. The more you ignore certain barriers the worse they will get as your mindset changes and your knowledge cements.

>>
>>77716171
I'm not saying to straight up ignore things that you don don't enjoy as much.
For example if you like painting lights and shadows, then maybe you'll have an easier time learning anatomy by playing with shading muscles with high contrast lighting rather than with lines. It may be a slower learning experience, but if you're not creating art as a profession then there's no obligation to min-max the efficiency of your practice.

While I agree with what you are saying, it is a very dangerous advice to give. There are tons of people out there that have been drawing for years but draw like autists, not because they don't want to improve but because they're afraid of shittier things than those they already can make so they end up drawing the same thing over and over.
'Fingers are too hard for me' is very much a valid excuse to never draw any and you shouldn't feel bad that you like drawing long sleeves better but people won't judge your art based on how much fun you had making it.

I could take the lazy furry aproach of "make everything look like a dog" and give her the typical longish portruding snout, but I prefer keeping the more straight-line profile feline skulls have which I'm definetely finding harder to draw at odd angles.

Either way I'm probably going to completely re-draw part of Rajiira tomorrow with a fresh eye since the head and shoulder are really bugging me.

It's about striking the right balance, but it's also about identifying the core elements that make you recognize things at a glance.

Bethesda is definitely guilty of just chopping animal heads and plopping them on a human body without much thought put into it.

Ideally you want to identify what makes you recognize a cat as a cat, and distill that into it's most basic and identifiable form, and integrate that with the human equivalent. The way I see it, the straight forehead-nose line is one of those elements for felines.
Then you use utilization to fill the gaps and make shit fit together nicely, which for me usually means giving the character big cartoony eyes and shrinking their mouth so it's all on the front of the face without extending to the sides.

>The way I see it, the straight forehead-nose line is one of those elements for felines.

it really depends on the kind of cat but in general that applies. The muzzle makes an almost square shape with the nose tip and chin in the larger, panthera sub family due to the huge jaws(which also changes the shape of their neck and shoulders), but in Felidae, the muzzle is shorter and smaller, more upturned, and this makes the face look flatter and more human-like overall.

Oblivion's Khajiit are lion based, which partly goes into why they're so uncanny and ugly, apart from the godawful texture work and animations. Skyrim uses housecat-like head geometry, and Morrowind has head models that resemble both.

>>
>>77722362
The thing is, you are not trying to draw a Khajiit and you are not trying to draw a cat. What you wanna do is draw Katia and if the fur color is the only identifying feature left, I don't know if you made the right choice.

Kaz himself has changed Katia's model so many times it doesn't warrant numbering. Things like the size of her muzzle, the presence of cheeks, the angle or height of her nose tend to float around, the linework and certain elements in the face are far more important.

Nonsense. There are like 4 different Katias:
From the beginning there was ballhead Katia and ballhead closeup. Later on came detail closeup (cheek tuft, more defined nose) and detail (same, but not in closeup).

Of course there were differences sometimes, but that is more of a consistency issue (what with Cider drawing and just sometimes not getting it 100% right).

Attached a comparison between randomly selected updates. Ballhead Katia is still used (not in closeups), but the main defining features have never changes: big eyes, big pupils, pointy eyelashes, "flat" ears and a cat-like mouth. Of course also the later added, rectangular cheek fuzz, which hasn't changed since.

Recycled sprites from literal years ago do not count, anon. You have to fish for actual unique drawings to spot differences.

Check her flash game look, the recurring gif of her turning to look back, or the latest page with her showing her bra. The length, height and shape of her muzzle, the root of ears and the angle of her forehead are not consistent, and are up to whatever works at the moment.

Trying to obsess over catlike features is probably the wrong way to go when drawing Katia, or most anthro characters. You shouldn't just draw a human face and paint it a cat color, but if you're stupid like Bethesda's artists, you try to incorporate the cat elements into the design and pull back on them a little, rather than doing what they should be doing:

Which is taking a human face, finding what's appealing about it and its ability to convey emotion, empathy, etc (because we're evolved to obsess over those traits) and then animalizing parts of a human face to incorporate those animal features to the point that they don't interfere with the character's ability to convey human reactions at all. Even if you're making a giraffe person it should still have a "human" facial arrangement and ability to express itself.

There's always someone that hates that and wants a realistic animal head on a human body though, and despises when they're sexualized and so on because they want a "true" fantasy creature. I imagine Bethesda had one of these dumbasses on their staff. The end result of that is a small minority of people loving the result but most people being completely unable to engage with the race or character because it's deep in the uncanny valley that Bethesda employees seem to want to live in.

Imagine if Kaz had, instead of using the simplified looking, flat, almost human looking face for Katia, had instead drawn a realistic looking Khajiit skull for her. Same with Quill-Weave. I doubt I'd be doing any fan art of it, that's for damned sure.

Those are very different things. As I said:

Changing the model would be something like adding the cheek fuzz, which he did once.

And those two panels you were referring to were one of a kind so far. If you look at this unique panel from the latest update. It's still the same eye/nose/mouth ratio.

I'm not sure why you're slagging off Bethesda. As far as character design goes, Skyrim has a photorealistic aesthetic. How would one design cat people when they have to stand next to unstylized humans? Katia's design works for Kaz because she fits her environment.

Also, the process of placing subtle animal characteristics on a human face would certainly fit an Ohmes Khajiit but not a Suthay-Raht.
>>
>>77723684

I can't agree with that. Part of the reasons we find certain animals like cats appealing is how they can display human-like behavior and expression as they are, and that molds our perception of them. Animals can express very well in meassure of how well the artist knows what elements there are in them to work with, there's hardly a need to humanize any further than necessary on cats, for example.

Also always starting off a human face cripples your ability to really go all out and give a unique look to characters. Humans themselves have such a vast range of variation in their faces already, that saying to stick with human features is not a bit constructive to fantasy, specially if the animal-ness is a relevant point, anthro sharks are THE most poignant example of people getting boring results for not venturing into 'ugly'.

How? Not sticking to a model is by any means a lack of design consistency.

He himself would probably tell you that Katia's design is only meant to be simple, recognizable and strike a few psychological chords to be as cute as possible, and any additional detail is an on the spot solution rather than a planned, stablished element.

Katia is more or less cat than what you need her to be, because her default for is 'circle'.
>>
>>77720690

>>
>>77724492

>>
>>77724382
There is a difference between design of a character and the consistency of the art in which the character is drawn.
The design is the mold and the art is whatever you put in the mold. With a bad mold you will always get a bad product, but with a good mold you can get a good product or a bad product depending on the materials you use. The mold itself rarely/never changes.

Well fuck you too.

It's a fucking fantasy game, not a furry game. You know what's mythologically inspired proper fantasy? Beastmen. Men with the heads and other characteristics of beasts. You know what's anime bullshit? Catgirls. Girls with some small secondary feline features.

Isn't the lack of desire for a relationship being aromantic, not asexual? Some asexuals really want romance and some aromantics are horndogs, so they're accounted as different. Asexuality refers to just... sexuality. So it sounds like he's a low-libido bisexual aromantic. Though possibly pansexual instead of bisexual, if we're using the gender-binary-limit definition of bisexuality, as he appears to display some attraction to argonians, who in some interpretations have gender life stage changes, which would make them genderfluid under clause IV of the Exceptional Atmospheric Ice Crystals in Online Parlance act of aught-9.

So he'll need to file form 117b (subsections A, D and E) at the Bureau of Gender and Sexuality Identification by 12 noon next Tuesday.

A lot of stuff I do with Prequel is for the noble cause of Seeing What Happens. Like, from the Homestuck-esque intentional style inconsistency to the occasional sad scene that makes people ragequit the comic and leave an angry comment, I try to test out a lot of things that people typically say are horrible ideas, but which I kind of suspect otherwise. How well I succeed at that is up for debate.

I'm pretty open about my efforts to do this, though. Like ideally I want people to look at stuff I made an either say "hey, that works pretty well" or "holy shit that doesn't work at all" and use that to inform decisions when making their own things.
