>>77663810
No, and I doubt they'll ever be mentioned again.
They were just used to show how evil and disgusting fundie parents are compared to super progressive minorities with lesbian daughters.
And the only reason Mikes parents are nice is because it's meant to be a joke that he's awful yet his parents aren't.
Ambers Dad is abusive so her mom obviously wasn't going to be portrayed as evil.

Joyce's parents are actually pretty good as far as fundies go. Most would've pulled her out of college back when she introduced her atheist friend to them. I'm okay with ignorant people being portrayed as ignorant.

I'm not sure she did side with him.
I think Joyce is meant to be realizing that, even if her mom isn't a crazed gunman, she still shares the same beliefs that drove toedad to do what he did, and those beliefs now sound kinda threatening after someone's pointed a gun at you over it.
Of course, I don't doubt that this whole thing will end with Joyce being a stronk indypendant woman and renouncing her parents.
>>77663574
To note "Bless his soul" in the south is the alternative to actually saying "Fuck Them" but Willis clearly doesn't mean that context.
>>77664276
It's more vernacular for "they're SO going to hell, poor sod."
>>77664276
>Bless his soul, but at least he thought he was doing the right thing.
>Bless his soul, but [positive statement].
>[negative statement], but [positive statement]
The "but" implies a contrast.
"Bless his soul" was meant negatively.
>>77663574
The fourth panel was fine to get the point across everything else just reads as JOYCE ITS OKAY HE HELD A GUN TO YOUR HEAD BECAUSE LOVE. No one tells their daughter that an outside perspective like me of a stranger who saw it on the news but not a parent that's been shown to love their kid.
>>77663574
Thanks for sticking with this Frost I hope we can see this plot out to its terrible end together
>>77663574
Hey, wait. Is Willis already ignoring the physics of a cast, and is treating it like a fingerless glove?
>>77664705
Yes.
>>77663832
this will be the "what's with all the niggers?" of DoA
>>77664431
>"Bless his soul" was meant negatively.
Southerner here.
"Bless his soul" and "bless him" are ALWAYS used in negative contexts, but can be sympathetic or sarcastic.
They either convey sympathy on someone who has suffered misfortune ("His wife passed away, bless his soul") or are a putdown (Bless his soul, that boy just can't learn.)
Bless his heart is the same phrase as well.
The context of this is, the Mom is expressing sympathy for his plight but disagreeing with his actions.
Southern is subtle.
>>77663574
>>77664276
>>77664431
>>77665009
I don't think it's especially South-restricted. Every time I heard anything in similar fashion it was in the meaning of there being some problem with the target of it.
Remember Joyce's parents in the Walkyverse, who actively encouraged her to bang any guy she was with?
>>77663657
His kids are going to turn into "race realist", anti-degenerate /pol/lacks and it's going to be really fucking funny because he'll just make a new comic where Joyce and Walky are parents with ungrateful bastard children.
>>77663574
I thought they would yell at her after making sure she was okay, but this is so much worse. I'd like to hope her parents would open their eyes a little and become a little less ignorant, but this is Willis we're talking about. Also those fingers holy shit.
>>77665009
Regardless the sentiment is poorly timed. A better person would probably have the tact to keep that option to herself for a little to let the dust settle first.
I don't understand how you don't enjoy watching Joyce gradually losing her faith.
Is character development to Tumblr a concept for you people?
So can we just start having funky winked bean threads again. When even les Moore is more likeable than your cast you have failed as a writer.
>>77665629
Joyce's development is probably the only good thing in the whole damn thing. The problem is everything else.
>>77665629
Because the point shouldn't be that she needs to lose her faith.
She can be a Christian and a good person and has even made strides in that regard.
>>77665629
She tends to be the only one we like. I don't mind these two past feeling her mom should have called her vs her leaving a message and the last two panels of this strip. They feel like its jsut beating a dead horse panel four and maybe panel six were enough. Five feels awkward for some reason.

>>77665758
Well yea they are supposed to be the same kinda people.
>>77663642
Nah, but he'll raise them "right", and then when they come of age he'll go full Toedad when they don't do what he wants.
The only difference is that he'll probably shit himself to death in a seizure rather than come and try to break them out and bring them home.
>"I love you Dad, but I'm going to the Seminary and Laserbeak is going to join a convent. God be with you."
>makes sign of the cross as they back out of the room.
>>77665725
>I don't mind these two past feeling her mom should have called her vs her leaving a message
Her phone was dead. Mom called back immediately after she sent the message, meaning she was hovering over her phone waiting for any signals from her child.
...Actually given the speed of call back, she may not have even listened to the message.
>>77665882
But how can you make that so hamfisted ?!
That line has no context at all, at least Ross said it while confronted by his possible death at the hands of the police.
But Joyce's mother ? She just says that to enforce the point that "parents are evil" without any kind of fucking context

Once again Willis doesn't understand emotional progression, or strip layout.
This would be so much better if it went panel 1-2-3-6-5-4 then the last panel included in the next strip. Joyce rants, realizes how harsh she sounds, and feels guilty about it.
Instead, we get this weird thing where she tones it down for 1 second then goes back to being angry. Then the phone rings like "WHO COULD IT BE" except it's obviously mom.

Maybe she was having problems shifting into No True Scotsman mode. Trying to separate a Good Christian like herself from a Bad Christian like Ross, even though they believe basically the same things.

So much of Willis' work is geared solely to put himself over. If there was more money to be had in comedy and nerd humor, he would have stuck with that. Unfortunately, there's more cred to be earned in social commentary and having Real and Grounded settings.
>>77673701
>Maybe she was having problems shifting into No True Scotsman mode.

But then he just tuns into incompetent christian terminator.

How can someone write a comic while simultaneously have no idea how humans interact or talk to each other?
In what world would a mother tell her daughter, after just being notified that a crazy man was waving a gun around at people, much less her, that it's ok because "He was just doing what he thought was right, God bless his soul"? (Nevermind that the guy himself was nothing more than a cartoonish caricature to begin with).

WHY?!
>>77680697
Because it's not about logic or realistic circumstances, Anon.

>>77663574
Apparently this part is somewhat autobiographical on Willis' part. At some level I can't hate on it because this is a story very close to who Willis is as a person. We can joke about "get therapy, Willis" but the fact of the matter is this IS therepudic for him. By having hsi character go through the same crazy behavior (obviously escalated) as a way to have this moment with Joyce where she feels her mom is just as bad as this monster of a man.
I dunno. After reading his post on tumblr I'm not gonna really hate on him for it I guess.
>>77675901

>>77680505
So, in Dumbing of Age Joyce is going to end up hating her parents and her religion while in It's Walky she held onto her faith and was fine, minus the evil Joyce clone she beat to death.
>>77681594
Yeah but he should actually get therapy instead of having thousands of dumb children tell him he's brilliant, and their parents also don't respect their genderfluid pansexual identity and its pronouns, which makes all parents evil and bad.
>>77681594
It's not so much therapy as much as it is catharsis in the long run.
Without actually choosing to look at issues from multiple angles, all this does is further validate his own point of view for himself. It likely doesn't help if/when other people agree with his point of view.
It's like his reaction to the Becky/Toedad edits. He prefers his own take on what Becky's reaction would be—immature and uncouth— versus the Anon's edits, which held development and a willingness of the character to accept that she can't change her father, but still respects him as a person. Or something to that effect.
In any case, it's all still his way of lashing out against his parents.
