I'm done with this comic. I've been reading this strip every day since March of 2007. I've watched this comic meander on for the last few years, and I just, don't care anymore. This is the strip that's done it for me.

Later Questionable Content, thanks for all the music jokes that I took the time to understand, they were some really cool bands to discover.

This page shows just how little Jeph cares about his own craft better than anything else in the comic. If even he has no interest in this piece of shit why should the audience?

At least that Claire shit was trying to tell a story, even if the execution was as bad as it could possibly be.

I find that a lot of webcomic artists are vocal about "Well, I did this and I'm not happy with it", and they post it because eventually you settle for good over perfect.

The other options are the guys that never update because it's not perfect and the DA "No crits" guys that refuse to hear it isn't perfect.
>>
>>77656092
True, but at the same time they dont make the kind of money Jeff makes to just make the comic.

Like, all he has to do literally all day is draw a comic. Others are probably freelancers with other jobs. Jeff just has to sit in front of a computer for a few hours draw out a little story, and not worry about other jobs that pay his bills to live.

I think the thing is, Jeph actually hates Questionable Content. See, for years, drawing and posting a page of QC was the last thing he did before going to sleep. First, when he still had a day job, it was a thing he'd do for fun to help him unwind at the end of the day. Then when QC became popular, he quit his job and made the comic his main source of income.

But he's not an artist, and not a writer. He doesn't have any educational background in art, he never studied it, he just doodled for fun. And that's what QC was, him doodling for fun. And even when he didn't have a day job, when QC became his source of income, he would still wait until the last hour before he slept to make a comic. Go back and read some of his old tweets. He constantly complains about how tired he is but still has to come up with a comic. QC became his career, but he continued to treat it like a hobby.

I think somewhere down the line, I'm going to assume it was soon after the stab-hand incident, he realized that his approach to QC was bad for the comic and bad for him personally. He tried to take QC more seriously, moving Marten and Claire's relationship forward, (trying) to keep a buffer so he doesn't draw it late at night when he's tired, dedicating time to the book collections and so on.

And what's the result of Jeph taking Questionable Content seriously? >>77655603 And why? Because he doesn't care. That's why he started recording music and drawing Alice Grove. I think it won't be long before he's done with QC. It took years for Jeph to take Questionable Content seriously, and when he finally did, he discovered that he hated it.

But then how's he going to pay for the 10k a month lifestyle he's become accustomed to? I doubt that money hasn't been tied up somewhere. I suspect he has a house and big bills and shit he needs to keep up with. And if he can't even carry a simple story arc, I doubt he's good with savings or investments.

Also doesn't he have an ex wife? I wouldn't be surprised if he needs to pay her some kind of support after the divorce.

Hes said he doesnt like doing QC that much, and Alice was his dream comic. Sadly both comics suck. Alice just sucks more because of QC.

And its Jeffs fault. Its entirely on him. He decided to make QC his job. He could have kept doing just merch and ad sales, but he decided to bring pateron into the equation for more money.

His fans are his boss now. Whether he likes it or not QC isnt up to him anymore. Pateron is basically like putting your company on a stock exchange. You gotta satisfy your investors. His fans are his investors, literally. Jeff can't even do his job. He complains about everything and does shitty work. If this was a "real" job, he would be shitcanned and replaced.

Jeff is living the dream and realized his dream sucks. He could quit anytime but he cant. He had no real skills. He went to college for music theory if I remember right. The best he could be is a elementary music teacher, if hes lucky. His music isn't good I might add. All he does is mix shit on garage band.

Holy fuck, I just remembered he kickstarted an album a year or two ago. Rented a studio and had it properly mixed.

Jeff is just really really fucking lucky. He fell into niche and became successful. How does he repay his audience? By being even more mediocre than he started out. Hes too far in to quit everything now.

I actually quite like the art in this one, compared to normal anyway.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the backgrounds are still dreadful and something about Hanners in the first and third panels makes it look like she was photoshopped in, but Penelope/Cosette are legitimately well drawn and I like the linework on Sven + his facial expressions.

Its better than his normal output for sure.
>>
Theoretically, let's say the patreon people all withdraw their money tomorrow, upset at this affront to effort. He still has adverts and merchandise sales. He'll still be like, okay, right?

With 10,000 a month he's rather well off, but can we make any reasonable conjectures as far as what he makes off ad revenue and merch sales? He'd still be pretty comfortable, right?
>>
>>77660045
Of course he's respecting the pronouns he wants nudes.
>>
>>77664636
He was making six figures annually years before Patreon came along, even assuming its a 50/50 split with his wife for running the business side of things he'd still probably be getting 50-60k a year from merch and ads alone - possibly more, depending on how much the site has grown since then.
>>
>>77661481
You'd think if he was secure enough in his fanbase to openly half ass his last comic he'd be less scared to take any chances with the narrative at all.

Don't know about "sharp" but metal spatulas with fine edges are useful for sliding under objects. The cheap plastic ones just push things around. I can see how someone could be careless with a fine spatula, but cutting one's wrist with it? That's a stretch.

The people paying Jacques obviously don't, and haven't ever, cared about the quality of anything in the comic and won't.

They just want to see these dumbass characters bumble into and out of relationships. They want Jeph to pander to them using their favoritest waifu.
>>

They care so much about this that shipping is a bannable offense on the forums because the mods don't want to deal with waifu flame wars.

They fellate Jacques and praise each new comic and storyline as if they were a series of successive masterworks.

Despite this, Jeph is still stressed out by their comments, and the Reddit page is toxic to him, despite having a net positive opinion of him.

"Jeph is a master story teller!"
"[Character X] is sooooo cute! *huggles!!!*"

>Don't they grill all new forum posters for excuses to ban them?
Yeah, they're constantly assuming bad faith of new posters and jump the gun with their suspicions. If the mods catch a new commenter who didn't go didn't grind exp in the new poster forum they'll post a passive aggressive "WELCOME NEW PERSON" reply to whatever thread it is.

>Jeph is still stressed out by their comments
The harshest thing posted there is along the lines of, "I wonder if Jeph considered..." Not even a criticism as much as a request for more information.

>Reddit page is toxic to him, despite having a net positive opinion of him.

Okay fellas. I'm gonna do it. I’m gonna attempt to read this entire thing. I'd always seen these generals on /co/, but I didn't truly become aware of the comic until the "This is me" page cause a shitstorm.

Just the other day, a friend recommended the comic to me after I recommended ‘It Hurts’ to her. She states: “It’s a really well written comic, with great relatable characters”.

I’ll trudge my way through it best I can, however, I would like to do my best monitoring Jeph Jacques’ descent into madness alongside reading the comic. Can you kind gentlemen please help me out in this regard? Any compilations of his various insane exploits available?

Thanks

I've been telling myself this since Marten and Dora broke up. That was the end of the Good Times. I suppose I keep coming back in the vain hope that somehow it will return to the heyday when Marten beaned a Kung Fu monk with souffle pan.

Off the top of my head, the most relevant events are:
1. Committing to QC as a career (linked in this thread)
2. Handstab 1.0
3. Handstab 2.0 (Marifat & the tranny)
4. Divorce
5. W-well, this is me
6. Today

There are various drinking and drug related episodes mixed in there but they're probably still mentioned or hinted at in the daily updates.

>>
>>77669350
Yeah, the end of Marten & Dora was the beginning of the end of this thing. It wasn't even that the comic hinged on the pairing. In fact, it was almost a background plot. For whatever reason, after the breakup, the comic got progressively more detached and disjointed. Whatever "heart" it once had was sucked out.

With every new attempted plotline or new character you can almost see Jeph trying to convince himself, "This is the one. This is what will bring back the fire. This is the new Hannelore or Marigold. This is the new arc that'll carry for years." A few days later and the "passion arc" is treated the same as all the "maintenance arcs", all 20 of them.
>>
>>77669493
The forums and Reddit think the ear thing is a big deal, but I'm on the fence about that. I think it's something corporeal that Jeph can transfer his extant Demons onto.

He's mentioned the ear thing several times over the years.
>>
>>77669607
My take on it, Marten and Dora were the relatively sane couple that everyone else revolved around. They WERE the heart of the comic, at least together. With all the crazy antics that went on around them, Marten and Dora were grounded and seemed stable.

Despite Jeph's assertion that "this has been coming for a long time", the break up came out of nowhere.

And, as you say, it cut the heart out of the comic. The Marten Claire pairing was an attempt to reestablish a stable relationship for Marten, but the whole trans thing aside, it's too little, too late.
>>
>>77669747
>"this has been coming for a long time", the break up came out of nowhere.
Yeah, the precursor was Dora's insecurity issues over the nature of the relationship, but it still came out of nowhere. They had been together for a while and suddenly she brings up concerns that you'd expect to hear much earlier in the relationship.

Dora says something to the effect that Marten was too wishy-washy and a pushover. While that's true, in context of when things were going south, Marten was actually assertive and vocalizing about Dora crossing boundaries. He was actually passing the shit tests at the time.

It'd be fine if Dora was rationalizing and the real reason explained later, but it doesn't come off that way. Dora is obviously deranged but the comic treats her as a saint.

The situation is quite similar to Marten and Claire. They had a long established relationship of coworkers with very little in the way of suggested mutual attraction and then one day Marten's personally changes entirely and suddenly the two are crazy about each other. As slow as this thing moves you'd expect 6-12 months of slow burn, not a weekend turnaround.

Not only that but Marten and Dora together linked everyone in the cast together and gave the comic a consistent setting in the form of the coffee shop. They were the tape holding all the various subplots together into a cohesive whole.

As soon as they broke off everything became a mess and the comic now jumps between a million different focal characters with little crossover between any of the subplots. We go months without seeing Dora, Sven, Tai, Steve or Marigold.

We got sick of them. The only reason his threads blew up lately is because the storyline that was running will probably go down as Willis's crowning achievement of crap. It was along the same lines as watching loss.jpg for Buckley or Marten fucks Claire for Jaques or the end of Season One for Korra (arguably usurped by Korrasami) go down live. Now that it's over, Dumbing of Age is still just as terrible but also about a million times more boring so why on earth would anyone want to read or talk about it or Willis?

>>77669350
>>77669607
Yeah, QC was never a must-read or anything but it was cute. When Dora and Marten split it kind of fucked up the chemistry between everyone and nothing had a good flow anymore. Jeph keeps trying to find a way to restore that state of balance by introducing new characters and arcs but none of them stick and in the meantime he's forgotten the stuff that was working for him. He fucked himself over and once he realized this he panicked and made things even worse.

It sucks because you know someone with the necessary passion, talent, and emotional stability could turn it all around and you keep reading in the vain hope that that will happen even though it won't because Jeph doesn't have the will or the ability to fix his comic.

Characters look odd and flat against such pretty backgrounds. Protagonist looks suspiciously like an Elsa knockoff. Pretty sure nobody reads flavor poems (at least I don't). Didn't hit much writing in the actual comic yet but if the website text is representative my expectations are low. Find a better editor. Preferably one more sensitive to comma errors and awkward phrasing.
>>
>>77681424
Stylistically I find your comic hard to look at. You have this jarring juxtaposition of random photoshop texture brushes for the environments paired with flat coloring on the characters with some gradients on top of them. I can see it being a personal choice, and I respect that, but it creates an unfortunate side effect: every character looks complete detached from the world around them, because they just look like you took the style from one comic and pasted it atop another entirely different comic. You see this exact thing with the furry community's works, a lot of deviant art stuff, and other unpolished artists who learned photoshop through youtube tutorials rather than through a source of constant and consistent ground-up instruction.

I think it's supposed to look like a Disney or a Don Bluth movie where the characters are flat and backgrounds are painted, but it doesn't work here.

Render the characters in the way you render the environments and you'll solve the problem. If you feel like you've invested too much into the general style to do that, then fix the next most glaring issue: line weight. You need to become educated on the importance of (and techniques behind) using line weight to accent and embellish the characters. Panel to panel you use an identical line weight for the characters, to the point that there's not even a variation when characters are at different distances from the "viewer."

oh shit, you've got a link down on the bottom
My mozilla isn't picking that up, usually a little icon lights up and says "there's an RSS feed here, if you click on me I'll freeze your browser"
